How to Open Garage Door Manually

How to open a garage door manually, by hand. If your garage door is not opening and you are in a hurry, you probably don't have the time to try to figure out why it's not working. In this video I quickly show you how to take your garage door off the chain and then how to latch it back on. And once you get back from work you can proceed with the garage door troubleshooting. Perhaps a power outage tripped a breaker. Good luck!

I live in Western Canada and we are experiencing an extreme cold period (-37C or -35 F) and there could be a lot of garage doors that are frozen shut. Your video is really helpful because there are a lot of people who wouldn't know what to do. If the garage door opener trips, they can attempt to manually open it as you have done and use a tool like an ice scraper to carefully free the bottom gasket from the concrete if it is frozen in place. After a bit of careful scraping and shaking the door hopefully it will break free and allow it to be opened. I am careful to keep the concrete contact surface under the door as clean and dry as possible. Lubing the garage door hinges once a year and spraying silicone spray on the bottom door seal once a year helps quite a bit as well. Thank you for the video.

Good advice. Years ago, we made the mistake of opening the door when it was frozen into the ground in the middle of February and broke a spring without moving the door. It was a super heavy old wooden garage door (in rough shape). We were in a mad rush to get to work so I broke out the reciprocating saw and got to work on time. Suboptimal solution haha..

Thanks for the video. Your spring needs adjustment. You shouldn’t have to race to stop it when it comes down. Should be able to place it anywhere in the travel and it will hold.

I was going to say the same thing. I noticed after I bought my wonderful dumpster house that the idiots had removed the springs from the garage door, so my door opener is going to probably burn out before I can afford to get it fixed.

@@MAGAMAN I’m shocked it works at all. The opener needs the springs to work properly. Usually you can buy replacement based on the type of springs you have. Without them you’d have to guess. Might want to call to have someone come out and install the right springs in your case. Hope it works out for you.

​@@WordofAdviceTVDepends on how strong you are and how heavy the door is. There are some lighter weight doors, but some are way too much to lift. And if you get it up, it is very dangerous if it falls. There is a huge amount of energy stored in garage door springs! Changing them is not necessarily very diy friendly.

Is amazing how many people don't know what that rope is for. Just make sure it can't be hooked from the outside. Your garage springs need a bit more tension on them to balance the door and possibly the opener arm should have a bit more angle to put less strain on the opener. Maybe a future video? 🙂

Heres a tip. Twice a year, which I do spring and fall, test the garage door balance. Which basically means unhooking it like you did, and see if you can lift it yourself. Many times I have had friends or family have this happen, and then you cant lift the thing at all, since the springs arent adjusted correctly. Also means over time the gearing in the opener may break due to the extra weight. If they open half way and can just sit there, then they are balanced correctly. While I do that, I always clean and the spray the bottom rubbers with silicone spray. -42 the other day, and the door rubbers werent frozen to the concrete

My garage door opener is so old it has no emergency release; had to disconnect manually because circuit failed and boy am I thankful there was room behind car to use step ladder in order to disconnect arm. Also am thankful wooden garage door only single wide and has it's own locking mechanism BECAUSE so far, circuit still out .. new breaker did not fix. Single door easy enough for me at 79 yo and 105 lb to raise and lower manually. But now, of course, must get out of car .. can no longer just automatically raise and lower door 🤨, but I am retired so am able to avoid taking car out when roads are not clean😁 SO, anyone else having door without emergency release, DO BE AWARE. I din't find cartoon yet, maybe link at end? HAPPY 24!

I've never had to deal with that before so I can't speak from experience. But I am assuming that the method I showed in this video should work the same way on most garage doors, even with a broken spring. The door will just be heavier and harder to lift.

Yes, you should be able to open it even with a broken spring. It will be really heavy though so be careful
