Outstanding -- best technical video, with fantastic tight editing! Starts with overview of the goal and necessary tools, then shows just what we need to see (none of the foolish hand-waving or "let me tell you about myself"), including the tricky parts of the process, with relevant links to what is outside the scope of this video. Real time-saver, which is hugely important to me. Thank heavens you aren't like those people who try to make technical videos, but spend more time on endless shaky silent video shots, or comedy, instead. I'm impressed, thank you!

could you do a video on how to reset the chip? explaining which software and tools to use and how to use them.
@weeardguy
@weeardguy 3 жыл бұрын
Well... first prepare yourself to either spend a few hundred bucks on software and buy a relatively cheap adapter to communicate with the BMS-chip and a PC (and then the BMS-chip can be one of many types, or spend a few hundred bucks on the brand-specific adapter and use the software from (for example) Texas Instruments (ONLY in case of a BQxxZxx BMS chip, other types won't work). But the main thing: first check if the BMS hasn't blown the logic fuse. The BMS does not only feature a protective mode (critical undervolt) but also senses the voltage of every cell (with a 'cell' being a combination of cells in parallel). When one of those cells suddenly goes bad and starts to discharge itself while the others are still in good condition, the BMS can drive it's SAFE-pin high to just disconnect the cells from the outside world as any further discharge is a risk to the remaining cells and charging sure isn't any good. If the BMS keeps from blowing the fuse in this scenario, it will do so when charge is applied: than current will increase so much that the fuse either blows from overcurrent or because the BMS goes into charge mode, detects a faulty cell and blows the fuse. I'm currently trying to get those special fuses and in fear of the genuineness of the stuff one can find on Alibaba/Aliexpress and sorts, I try to get them from the original manufacturer (dexerials, in my case, ATC Semitec also supplies them). And that's NOT easy...

I got a 96 or so watt hour battery from HP for a HP DV2000 and it definitely is the type that is glued together. Battery runs the laptop for maybe 10 or 15 minutes before laptop will shutdown. I plan to replace the entire pack and dissemble the old one salvage the good cells. Unlike the one shown here mine has 2 pairs of 6 18650s so I should be able to scrounge together a pair of good cells for my vintage Compaq M700 which uses same cell type. Though that battery pack takes 4 cell pairs instead of 3 like the one shown in this video. I have already pulled that pack apart. Given it's age the controller (for the Compaq M700 laptop) doesn't really track cycles like the newer ones so that one is just a matter of disconnecting the controller for resetting it once I put the new cells in. So I should hopefully be able to get that one to at least run the laptop for at least 30 minutes at least. The battery pack for it is unoptanium now so rebuilding it is really the only route I can take. That laptop doesn't pull as much current as the HP DV2000 too so I think if I can find some decent cells out of this battery pack should hopefully give new life to that laptop. The rest I plan to use as spares for my bicycle flashlight which uses a single 18650 cell. (fun fact the AC adapter for that laptop works with the HP DV2000 too. Though the newer laptop pulls about 1.5 more amps then the older laptop so I wouldn't really recommend using it. I plan on getting a proper adapter for it eventually. Found this laptop (the HP DV2000) being sold as is at my local pawn shop for only $5 as-is because the screen wouldn't turn on. Turned out the power cable to the backlight for the screen had come loose so was easy fix! :D ) But the tricky thing will be finding which good cells are in this pack I can use because voltage alone won't tell me which ones are bad. It's the current capacity that has degraded in these cells contrary to what many people might think. Battery voltages going negative (polarity reversing) will of coarse be an easy spot but once that happens the controller shuts down and the pack will no longer charge so pretty sure none of my cells have degraded to that point yet. This actually happened at one point with the battery back for my Compaq m700. It's how I know the charge controller is pretty simple and doesn't have any fancy limits. I replaced the cell pair that went negative and the controller lets me charge it again. Though I still only get like 5 minutes out of it right now so all the cells still need to be replaced. Looks like I might have to get a bit more destructive to pull mine apart. Not too bothered by that though. I don't plan on reusing it anyways and aftermarket packs can still be found. (for the HP DV2000) The after market standard capacity ones being easier to pull apart is good to know. The ones i've found are only like $15 on ebay so if I don't find enough decent cells in this dead pack I plan to just buy a second HP pack and pull that one apart. (well actually now that I think about it I'll probably have to get 2 because I need 4 cell pairs and these HP packs only use 3 cell pairs) EDIT: Was able to open the pack up without severally mangling it up. (the edges are pretty rough though but it holds together fine if I use some tape. :P ). Checked and seen normal voltages for all the cells so looks like my pack either has a battery IC that has decided to not let windows keep the computer powered up for more then 15 minutes or the cells current capacity has dropped. I did test the batteries with BIOS screen pulled up though and get much longer run times so it's only Windows that is causing the laptop to shutdown early. I believe perhaps it's the battery IC intentionally giving the computer low battery level. this probably happens after a certain amount of recharge cycles. Cells might still be ok and IC needs to be reset. Don't really have the hardware to do that though. I've read that you need a USB/I2C adapter to connect IC to a computer to reflash EEPROM to reset battery stats. Probably more trouble then it's worth. I'll probably just pull the cells out and try and install them to my Compaq M700 pack. Though the batteries are in pairs of 4 so will be tricky to seperate them to pairs of 2 without breaking off the solder tabs. Hopefully I have something that can cut tab ends in half so I can still make them fit. :P Since all the cells appear to show similar voltages when I do this I plan to fully discharge the pack then pick the cell pairs with the highest voltages for use in the m700 pack.

Very thorough and informative vid, thank you. Is it possible to reinstall a combination of good cells back into the laptop battery case then use it as a powerbank for the laptop by cabling it in through the DC input jack on the laptop? Would this powerbank then just require a 12v external trickle-charger? I suppose the problem there would be that the laptop wouldn't be sensing the battery drain, and would "think" it has an AC adapter plugged in.
@ElectronicsComputers

Technically it's possible but laptop's jack require not 10-12 volts but 19-20 volts. So you need more cells to achieve that voltage. No sense.

@weeardguy
@weeardguy 3 жыл бұрын
Completely depends on the chip used. The laptop-batteries I have opened so far contain a chip from Maxim or a BQxxZxx (with xx standing for whatever kind of number) from Texas Instruments. The last chips are incredibly complicated chips that communicate per SMbus (a rather timing-intolerant protocol), feature password-protected access, require the chip to be 'unsealed' before you can write to certain parts of the dataflash and then you have the 'full access' mode, which makes sure you can alter anything you like, but requires specific commands to be send first to get into that mode. Just using a voltage controller won't work: it will only sense cells connected and everything that happens to them and will count a cycle as specified in the software (don't know about the Maxim ones but the BQ20Z65, the one I'm dealing with right now, can be set to refrain from charging if the pack-voltage is at a level considered unnecessary to charge, a level that can be preset by the user via software.

Do you think you can avoid blowing the fuse and bypass the problems wth the BMS-chip if you first connect a new set of fully loaded 18650 cels in parallel with the old ones, and only then disconnect the old ones and put everything back in place? I mean, you take good new cells, charge them, prepare the configuration as in the laptop battery and then connect the old cells in parallel with the new ones. Then connect the new cells to the leads of the circuit board; After that disconnect the old cells and put everything in place. I tried this method with good results on my old dive computer (but this had only one cell to replace). Or will the BMS disconnect after a certain amount of charging cycles, regardless of the state of the battery?
@ElectronicsComputers

That trick will work if your charge controller not in a protected mode (for example when it says that the battery needs to be replaced or if you've already messed up with its wires). But again replacing the cells without reflashing the controller is also not a good idea. You can use some software like Aida64 which shows the battery life in %. If it shows something like 0-20% battery life then there's no point replacing the cells (without reflashing the chip) because even with the new cells the battery will be disabled after those 20% of life or something.

You have to reflash the chip to reset it counter. The fuse 12AH3 or 12AG3 is externally triggerable fuse. Their main purpose is to provide a way for the microcontroller to physically break the circuit if it detects a potentially dangerous condition like the overheating of the cells, shortcircuit or cells disconnection by user user.

@@ElectronicsComputers What is the gas gauge chip #
@weeardguy
@weeardguy 3 жыл бұрын
@@CMEFLIP Because you don't want to. The fuse is their as a 2nd tier safety feature. Charging and discharging is controlled by the BMS IC (fuel/gas gauge chip), via a MOSFET for each function. If for whatever reason the BMS-IC detects a fault, it will either turn the respective FET off, or go into a shutdown mode if the situation asks for it. Now, let's say one is charging the battery, but one cell starts to overheat: the BMS will know about that situation as it has at least a thermistor outside stuck to the cells and (sometimes) also has its own thermistor inside the chip. So, the BMS will signal a fault and will cut off the charge-current by disabling the charge-FET. But as the charge-FET is an electrical component which can fail, it could happen that the BMS can try to shut the FET down all it wants, but if the FET keeps conducting, the cells will be seeing charge. The thermal problem will get worse and thermal runaway is a serious problem with lithium cells. That's why the fuse is there: if cutting of charge-supply doesn't work for some reason, while the BMS tries its best in doing so, it will trigger an alert-state and drive a pin on the fuel gauge high, which in turn starts heating a filament underneath the fuse element, that within a given time, breaks the circuit. Really, you do NOT want to remove this feature if you care about your home, your product the battery lives in, and (an even worse scenario) all the people on a plane you are travelling with while you thought it's a good idea to mess with a fuse inside a battery. It really is a kind-of last resort for the BMS-IC: don't mess with it.

If the voltage of Li-Ion cells falls below 2.5 volts, they are deeply discharged. It's not a good idea to continue using them. There is a risk that they will later become critical and burn. Yes, you can be lucky and nothing happens, but the risk is significantly higher than with healthy cells. Nobody wants a house burning or loss of life. Before disposing of such cells, it is best to discharge them completely to 0 volts. Some good chargers have this mode. If not, an old light bulb from a bicycle or something similar will also help.

I think my hp battery is 8 cells but it says 4910 mah. Were batteries really that bad 10-15 years ago? Seems like todays 18650 are easily 1500-3000mah which is 3-6x more capacity

bro, if you have a battery that says +14.4 and it has 4 bateries, does that mean each battery is 3.6v, 3.7v or 3.8v ?
@ElectronicsComputers
@ElectronicsComputers 3 жыл бұрын
The nominal voltage of 18650 cells is 3.7V and 4.2V when fully charged.

How to cut apart the cells without them sparking? Kinda scary. Especially on 24v tool battery packs.

If you are concerned about using tools to open it, just go outside and throw the entire assembly against the ground, usually it will pop open on first try with moderate force.

Laptop battery timing is very low almost 10 min. I have done window but condition is same. And then I open the battery and the battery have 6 cell. All 6 cell shows the 4.22 voltage but they should show 3.7 voltage, What there is problem,can you tell me if you understand it?
@MagnumForce51
@MagnumForce51 Жыл бұрын
3.7 is nominal charge. However 4.2 is the floating voltage for a fully charged 18650 cell when a load is not connected. It is normal for your cells to show a 4.2v charge. it means they are fully charged. But if your issue is the battery not running the laptop for long enough, either the charging IC decided to limit usage time after a preprogrammed limit of charge cycles or the cells current capacity has degraded so the voltage drops faster then normal. So voltage alone doesn't always tell you how degraded a cell is. You have to load test them. ;)

@ElectronicsComputers

Yes, they are both compatible with your laptop. Those are the same batteries. Whether you call the average 18650 cell voltage 3.6 or 3.7 makes no difference; they're the same.

@@ElectronicsComputers However the battery has marked 10.8v that is true. Maybe the battery board can drop about voltage to 10.8v. Because the note book need 10.8v to operation. That is my think about . Many thanks
@ElectronicsComputers
@ElectronicsComputers 3 жыл бұрын
@@fanchiyuen2846 Man, you don't understand. there are inside 18650 Li-ion cells. Li-ion batteries have nominal voltage 3.6-3.7V and if you connect 3 cells in series you'll get 10.8V or 11.1V. Moreover those batteries have that voltage only when they are not fully charged. A fully charged Lithium battery has 4.2V which means some manufacturers instead of 10.8 or 11.1V can mark that battery as 12.6V battery. But anyway it will be the same battery. Don't worry about it's just different markings of the same battery model.
