Not as easy as the Phantom 2 it turns out. Here's how to open the shell on the Phantom 3 and quick look at the new internal layout. The days of a quick swap-out of a burnt out ESC are over...
Flytrex kits for the P3 Professional and Advanced ARE now available from bit.ly/flytrex if you want to fit one. The new layout means it can be mounted internally now...
You can get the gimbal cover & clamp seen in the vid from eBay UK here: ebay.to/1TLapva a similar concept but not flexible can be found on eBay US here: ebay.to/1KZVECa

My "On the Kitchen Table" videos are mainly aimed at newcomers to multirotors, quadcopters, drones and UAVs, particularly to the DJI product range, and the Phantom line in particular. I have how to's, product reviews, tips, tricks, hints and information for beginners and those in the early stages of the hobby. I film "on the kitchen table" to show people that, like me, you don't need a workshop and an array of specialist equipment and years of experience to get started and progress with flying these amazing aircraft and enjoying making great aerial videos and stills. So if you have bought, or are thinking of buying, a DJI Phantom 3, Phantom 2, Phantom 2 Vision or Vision+ or Plus, Inspire 1 or even building your own DJI Flamewheel F450 or F550, or considering the Lily, 3DR Solo, Yuneec or more then you too can do it... on the kitchen table!

Hi Simon Like yourself and s few others I'm a little surprised at the way they've intergrated the ESC's onto the main board. If an ESC fails, which is quite probable in the event of a bad landing where the Phantom tips over and the motors are still trying to turn, it will be next to impossible for your average owner to repair themselves. Also, unlike previous versions of Phantoms, there is no airflow over the FETs of the ESC circuits. However it's obvious that DJI have put a lot of thought into the construction as there is a noticeable absence of wiring around the main board. One little tip with separating the shell is to use a heavy gauge guitar pick rather than a metal blade as this will reduce the likelyhood of accidentally breaking the clips and also prevent gouging the plastic. Overall the P3 seems to have had a relatively successful launch where as the 3DR Solo appears to be suffering issues due to what might be considered a bit of a premature release in a similar vein to that of the Inspire and earlier Phantoms. Regards Nidge

Watched your video and took the lid off mine to realign the shell after a crash (One of the locking tabs popped out from the shell flexing so hard). I kept thinking to myself as I was popping the tabs, "this process should not be so violent, I'm going to break something!". Well I stuck with it and was successful, but it is seriously concerning how much force you need in the right places to remove it....

My P3 Advanced needed a T9 for the screws nearest the landing gear on the arms. These screws also had no Blue goo and were torqued down pretty firmly.

Actually the T9 was used for all the shell screws except the very end one at the end of the arm. The product manual says T8 but the shell screws nearest the landing gear were in pretty tight and I felt slipping with the T8 so I tried a T9 and it worked great.

What we are looking at here is DJI saving money on production of the Phantom as everything is integrated into a single mainboard. And just as you said, this means damage to an ESC (for instance caused by a motor being stopped rapidly) means the ENTIRE Phantom is basically broken. You would have to replace the entire mainboard, this is a huge step backward from the previous Phantom 2 as it had a more "modular" design which allowed for various components to be removed/replaced. This is not a step towards the customer, but rather a step towards quicker mass production and lower production costs. Also this setup means putting it together in the factory will probably take less time compared to the Phantom 2 due to more connections having to be made (solder points etc). The ONLY downside of the Phantom 2 modular design is that with more cables and connections, there is greater chance of failure due to material fatigue... I fly the Phantom 2 with the DJI 2312 motors (the same as the Phantom 3 motors) and H4-3D and GoPro 4 Black and in reality there is basicly no difference except the almost useless ground sensor of the Phantom 3 which is only useful if you fly indoors which in most scenarios you wouldnt do anyway. The promotional video showed it flying in a church during a wedding, as a professional videographer I can tell you that nobody in the right mind would let a drone fly inside a church during a wedding simply due to the intense noise, it would ruin the entire atmosphere, think of it logically, there isn't much use for the ground sensor. All it does is suck power and add weight for 90% of your flights with absolutely no benefit to you at all. Yes it has better GPS, that is true... Just my 2 cents, certainly not worth the upgrade for me :)

Unfortunately, I had to figure this out when I first received my Phantom and had to change out a motor that I messed up. Not wanting to break anything, it took me about 2 days to find the clipped areas and figure out how to get them loose. That video will be a great help for all the flight mechanics. Thanks for sharing!

This has kind of pushed me away from upgrading in the future, I always liked the idea that if I can fix it myself I will more than happily give it a try, so integrating the ESCs on to the main board is disappointing. I think if I ever did an upgrade though I would most likely remove the clips from the shell, too much effort for the usual maintenance. Plus known how heavy handed I am I would probably crack some trying to get in anyways. As always though cheers for the video :)

@Ben7seven7 9 жыл бұрын
My guess for making the ESC all in one component with the main board is to reduce production costs ease of factory installation and reduce the points of failure with less solder connections. The downside of that from the consumer point of view is a far more costly and difficult repair should one fail. Good for DJI but bad for the consumer. You had to guess there was some reason how DJI could integrate all these extra features into the Phantom 3 Pro but at a reduced cost over the Phantom 2 Vision plus and this is one of the reasons why.

It's about time that DJI strengthens the bottom part of the shell from where the LED location ends and the two screw area and motor location begins. Especially that double screw location. A lot of them are developing cracks there which leads to a situation where the top of the shell can no longer do its job of keeping the motors from twisting. The only solution after the cracks develop is to glue the top of the shell to the bottom along the seam from double screw hole area to it's corresponding location on the other side. The phantom 3 does not crack anywhere else other than there. Definitely not inboards of the LED area where the shells are thicker and stronger.
@edbighi6786
@edbighi6786 9 жыл бұрын
***** But keep in mind that the over tightening of the four inner screws has never, ever, led to any stress cracking issues on any phantom. 1, 2 or 3. Why? Because the material thickness around the middle of the phantom is far more suited to the task at hand and far less susceptible to over tightening issues. You could have chimpanzees tighten the inner screws and have zero chance of a crack. But when we are talking about those two side by side screws after the lights, the slightest bit of over tightening leads to cracks. In my opinion it is material isn't thick enough in that area along with over tightening. I had to super glue all four of my phantom 3 arms at the last quarter and now the structure is stronger than before against twisting forces. Three and a half hours and twelve flights later and no more stress cracking issues.

Hi Simon! great to see you got the phantom 3! I have a phantom 2 and am very happy with it except for the low quality video feed, Lightbridge is such a great feature on phantom 3 but does not justify the upgrade and as you know getting the Lightbridge on phantom 2 cost way too much. Also I'm quite disappointed they are not providing any support for gopro cameras...Now my questions, have you tried the H3 4D (or 3D) on the phantom 3? do they have the same cable connections? if not would it be easy to hack it in your opinion? have you tried the remote controller of phantom 3 with a 2.4GHz phantom 2? Any suggestions of 1080p video transmitter on phantom 2? Would be great if you could tell us what things from the phantom 3 we can use in the phantom 2 :) thanks Simon!

Another tutorial shows and unscrew on the 4 legs. I think that we have to unscrew only the defect motor. Last question if you know. On the same tutorial, after welding the new motor, it is shown that he use hot glue. Is it necessary ?

***** Yes a black box data recorder. Data is accessed by plugging cable into usb jack on P3. System must be powered up and in the pilot app in the Advanced setting there is a command to enter flight data mode. The SD card will then show up as a drive on your computer. This is much the same as accessing data stored in the iOSD Mk 2. Downside is that as of yet there is no program to read the data. There is one for the iOSD Mk2 data but it does not work for the phantom data.

Hi Simon! A question: why would You like to add Flytrex to P3? What's the point here? As I understand P3 is all in one UAV and soon it will even have POI/mission planner. You can also record Your flight using Your Nexus 7 (as a separate video) so loosing Your quad is rather impossible, but please, let me know, if I'm wrong somewhere here. BTW, how big is Your lag in Nexus 7 2013 (I have the same one and soon will buy a P3 Pro)? I've read that the iPad Air 2 & Mini 2 (and up) are the best tablets with the smallest lag among all tablets. Thanks and all the best!

True, but I believe it was much more useful (Flytrex or similar 3G/GPS based tracker) on P1 or P2 than can be now, on P3. All those famous "flyaways" which was mostly caused by unexperienced pilots and popularized by earlier versions of Phantom with naza system now, with a new P3 is unlikely to happen. Of course, good to have a tracker on board, but at the end every gram counts; I was thinking about it for a very long time (I have rather heavily modified P1.1.1), but decided not to buy it mostly because of the additional weight.. Thanks for the info about Your N7 - I appreciate this! :) Cheers!

That would be the equivalent of replacing the logic board in an iMac or MacBook Pro. QUITE EXPENSIVE. Blow an esc outside of warranty and I'm sure the cost would make you rather buy a whole new phantom. If anyone knows about the cost please let me know because I would still love to get one.

Is that the Phantom 3 that vibrates like a shivering chicken ? I heard they fall apart from the shell cracking and vibrate making them unusable for any quality video recording...

Thanks for the video but after seeing this I will never buy a phantom 3 looks like a real pain in the ass to service.I love my phantom 2 and have serviced it plenty of times from new ESC,bearing replacements,motors,gps mod for more sats,Osd, and remote mods..it dose what I need I fear that if I ever make the move to a p3 I will hate myself.I do love the VPS module other than that my hero 4 black takes better video and is much more customizable in post.

+tokoam Your Hero4 black doesn't take better video, nor does mine. There's no fisheye here and you don't have to buy (and install, adjust, tweak) a 3rd party replacement lens for $200+ (or whatever they go for these days) to eliminate the fisheye effect. This is so much more versatile, too. You can change ISO and shutter speed while flying in video and stills mode. You can shoot video, then shoot stills, then back to video while flying. I think I changed from regular stills mode to HDR while flying the other day. Image quality is excellent...for a small-sensored camera. Once you put your P2/Hero4 in the air, it's settings are not adjustable until you manually change them...but that requires you to land first. Gimbal on P3 is topnotch. Whole camera/gimbal unit costs $530 appx compared to $700 for Hero 4 and DJI Zenmuse gimbal. I don't work for DJI, but DJI's stuff works for me and makes me money. I'm not thrilled with the one-piece main board, but that's the price of doing business with such a wonderful creator of amazing products which are intrinsically linked to their evil customer service and proprietary design features.

ah. I kinda feel like its just another way for them to make more money, as far as I know making everything on one main board doesn't give any real advantages (correct me if im wrong)

+Matt Brewer it costs a TON more if you break an ESC or burn out a motor or if anything really happens you have to replace the entire board

These flimsy DJI plastic shells really are complete and utter rubbish, especially for the price you pay. I build and fly racing mini quads with carbon fibre frames and you can literally hit a tree at insane speeds and the tree comes off worse for wear. New props and you are back in the air in minutes, with any luck. Never broken so much as an arm yet (lost a $30 FPV flight camera once and smashed LOTS of props, lol) An entire carbon racing frame kit can be had for $70 up to $200 or so. So why the crap plastic on the DJI?

This is a little depressing. for something which is quite pricey, repair is a requirement if something goes wrong. Which it will. Shame.

***** I believe it might point to another problem. The ability to buy a 'toy' like a phantom off the shelf changed the type of person who could put something into the air. When you had to build it yourself the mentality was different. There was fundamentally more to loose. And with the toy nature of the device come the toy mentality of the user. And the reaction to it from the likes of the cca is enviable.
