I have an LX188/ There's third position using the handle, which is all the way forward to where it locks itself so that the deck doesn't bounce on uneven lawns. I use mine that way. There doesn't seem to be a problem mowing that way.

I picked up an lx188 that was not tunning and i put some gas and it ran but barely and it smokes really really bad. I'm thinking the engines junk

What if my lx188 doesn't go uphill or back over a bump to get into the garage? The motor doesn't bog down or anything like that. But just doesn't go up a slight hill...???

The old LX models all at some point need a new transmission drive pulley that is located on top of the transmission it may be that or your transmission drive belt has popped out of a idler pulley, or your transmission internally is failing. Take the mower deck off and look up at the transmission belt to see if you can locate the issue.

Just picked up an LX188. The numbers on the deck height adjuster indicate how far the blades are off the ground?

I do believe so but the machine settings are from factory brand new. The problem is to many variables after the tractor ages, sag, pivots wear, tire pressure so I would just set the deck height and then cut to see how it looks. Once you find a good cutting height, just leave it in that setting. Make sure you adjust your tire pressure!!! Tire pressure does make a difference on the height and how the grass looks.

What would you say a 1996 model with 52" deck is worth? (about 700 hours on it)
