Scientists and staff at Troll Research Station in Antarctica concluded their summer season this week. Most of the station’s staff went home to Norway on a charted Icelandair 767 via Cape Town. Learn a little about what it takes to operate an airport in Antarctica and see footage of the 767s arrival and departure here and then visit www.flightradar24.com/blog/tr... to see more photos and learn more. You can also listen to our very special episode of our AvTalk podcast with Sven Lidström, the operations manager at Troll Research Station at link.chtbl.com/AvTalk106.

I am an en-route ATC at Cape Town that worked this flight on it's way to Troll airfield - great video showing what happens when they arrive on the other side. Would have loved to have been able to hop on board, Antarctica is an incredibly unique destination. Always great to see such a shiny 767, we don't get too many of them down here (and they're a lot prettier than the IL-76s that fly to Novo!)

I have flown out of Glasgow to Barra airport, but the difference is that the plane Lands on the Beach & that's when the tide is out, its really great - if you ever come to Scotland, go to Glasgow airport and get a flight to Barra airport but go on a nice day and you will have enjoyed the whole flight.

Some truly awesome aviation, in Norwegian owned Antarctica! This huge international continent has some intriguing operations. Check out the Australian government run A319 service between Hobart and Wilkins.

Superb footage and what an adventure for all involved. I love the pristine backdrop that Antarctica provides for this. Most 'remote' airport I've ever used would have to be Barra and the infamous beach landing.

Spent a summer at Scott Base Antarctica (NZ research station), flew down in a RNZAF C130 and back in a USARP C130, 8 hours each way. I am picking the 767 is somewhat more comfortable :)

I’d love to do that flight! My mist remote flight was Longyearbyen on Svalbard in 2016. The best adventure I’ve ever had.

very nice report, many thanks! My approach to the most remote airfield was probably to Malabo at a time when there was only a non-precision approach and the only light you could see on approach was the gas flaring of the nearby gas plant. But also Tromsö was very interesting...

Williams Field, McMurdo Station in a USAF C-5 Galaxy Nov 98. Never even felt touch down due to the flex of the ice. Absolutely amazing. One of that latest flights for that aircraft of the season in 1998 due to the temperature increasing. Departed four months later in a USAF C-141 Starlifter back to Chc, NZ.

Since you asked about most remote airport/airfield visited.... I'll go North instead of South. Airfield/Airport : Constable Pynt also known as Nerlerit Inaat Airport. now I also got some location further north... but there's no airport/airfield/landing strip... just a patch of ground where Iceland Based Twin Otters can land. that place is called :Ymer Ö ( near Karl Jakobsen Bugt and Botanikerbugt... there's a hut and some ground solid enough for a Twin Otter to land and lift )

The most remote place I've flown into was Ascension Island's Wide Awake Airport a couple times with the US Navy (P-3). Ascension Island is a beautifully stark, arid, volcanic rock island with an odd, green mountain spike (Green Mountain) that sticks up into the clouds so gets constant moisture. It's the only green on the island to speak of. On one of my visits the Falkland Islands war was hot & heavy so Ascension was overrun with bored Brit military waiting to go/or coming back from the Falklands.

Very nice would love to go there. The farthest airport I've ever been was probably Easter Island (Chile). Only sea for 5 hours and then all of a sudden there's this island (airport length is the same width as the island).

Most remote field? South Pole station flying out of Williams Field/McMurdo via Navy LC-130. Been a couple years, but will never forget it.
