Please note that there is some confusion: I stated covalent bonds for the bonds between Hydrogens & Oxygen of a single H2O, not the bonds between water molecules which, as many people pointed out are hydrogen bonds. I will post a clip to social media and elsewhere to further clarify.

Hi Andrew! I’m hoping you see this… Can you discuss about hemifacial spasm and why some of us like me tend to get this sort of tick? I’ve been suffering this “tick” for over a decade and it is embarassing and frustrating but scary at the same time to even consider MVD surgery not to mention very expensive. Is there a way to kind of stop it a neurological perspective? What do we need to do? Pleaaseee provide us some of your thoughts! Thank you!

Thanks for another helpful vid, AH! 😊💧👍 Funny story 4 ya - I used to unwillingly take partially cold showers as a teen, because my parents would turn the hot water off after 10 minutes (I'm a long-showerer). I had read in some magazine interview that Antonio Banderas would take 1/2 cold showers - this was around the time he was in the film, "Desperado" - & I had a big crush on him... so, to get myself through the brutally cold water after 10 minutes, I would pretend that Antonio Banderas was in the shower with me! 🤣😂🚿💓 Good times! I was expecting some mention of spring water when you went through distilled, R/O, hydrogen water, etc... kinda surprised there was nothing, unless I missed it?? I used to drive 45 minutes to fill up dozens of glass bottles of spring water, (at the closest public spring to me), every month or 2 instead of buy it in plastic. Got to be a lot on my own w/long trail in and out of woods to car, repeatedly. (Bf used to help). At any rate, curious your thoughts on spring water vs tap? Did I miss that section?

Im a water treatment plant operator, and a helpful tip for the low cost option is to shake the water a bit, as many of these are whats called volatiles, which "go away" when exposed to oxygen. This can actually help with the chlorine taste in water as well. On the topic of hard water and showers, taking showers with hard water can actually make your skin feel "tight" after a shower, which is actually just your skin being dry believe it or not, and this affects your hair, this can be why women won't wash their hair more than say twice a week sometimes. Just thought this was helpful information from my field of work.

I’m an undergrad studying environmental engineering, one thing to note about disinfection byproducts is that they should decay at a pretty fast rate depending on where you are relative to the water treatment facility. Like mentioned if you leave your water stagnant, even sitting in a pitcher for a day or two a great amount of them should decay out even without having to pour off the top. However, if it is about to rain most treatment facilities will ramp up their addition of disinfectants depending on the plant’s source, so it is a good idea if you’re trying to avoid DBP to not draw water for a half a day during that rain or snow event. Another variable is where your house is in comparison to the treatment plant called “water age” that would be interesting to look into if you all have time.

I lived in Flint, Michigan during the water crisis - when lead was leaching into the drinking water from municipal lines so this topic is very near and dear to my heart. My family and pets were negatively affected. I was part of a research team with the University of Michigan that looked into how much lead was leached from the pipes, and we also looked at microbial communities associated with the different types of water service lines. Municipal water leaves much to be desired.

isn't the water crisis STILL happening in flint!? even nine years later? i like to watch status coop an independent "news" channel here on youtube and he has traveled to flint many times but i'm pretty sure he recently said the 9 yr anniversary is coming up soon and the lead problem/water problem is STILL not fixed!!??
@davidyeoman6013
@davidyeoman6013 Жыл бұрын
@@Meloniraelewis there are still many homes in Flint that contain lead in the premise plumbing and receive municipal water from lead contaminated lines. To completely eliminate lead will cost several billion dollars. I think the original estimate was $5 billion. One of the many problems is that the city doesn’t know where all the lead service lines are. I was tasked with mapping the plumbing material in residential areas using records that were decades old. Flint is a legacy city and many of the records were hand-written on notecards if they existed at all. A cost-saving system was developed to quickly determine the type of material using a hydro vac truck which shoots water into the ground and a vacuum that sucks up the slurry to dig a quick hole down to the service line coming from the city’s main water line to each household. In most cases a vast majority of the lead piping was left in the ground and simply replaced with copper as it would cost a lot of money to dispose of the lead. Because I worked as a researcher with the University of Michigan we took dozens of samples of the lead lines as they were being replaced. It’s amazing how well the lead has held up over time. When we pulled out a piece of galvanized steel or aluminum out of the ground that was only a couple decades old it would be completely corroded, however, when we’d pull out a piece of lead that in some cases was 60, 70, or 80 years old, it looked like it was put in yesterday. One can understand why lead was used in those days as it was a very durable metal, resistant to the elements. The problem is, water is the great solvent, and when corrosives were added to the water when the city made the brilliant decision to switch to the Flint River Water as the municipal source while the new Karegondi water line was being installed from Lake Huron, they did not account for the increased organics that they would have to contend with from the river water that has leaves, grasses, etc. constantly falling in, which is much different from the water that comes from a mile out in a Great Lake, so when the extra corrosives were added it stripped the protective layer of orthophosphate that builds up and coats the inside of the pipe over time, keeping lead from leaching into the water. Also, many plumbing fixtures such as faucets, fittings, joints, etc. within the household do not have the protective layer so the corrosives immediately leached lead from these areas. Many people had their service line replaced but could not afford to completely re-plumb their entire household.

Notes I made for my learning from this episode: Dehydration can have a negative impact physically and mentally, even only slightly. How to measure dehydration: fingernail and skin pinch test. Assess urine. Baseline hydration: similar across bodyweight. In normal environments for every hour you are awake in first 10 hours of your day, consume 240ml of water (can size) an hour. Or 2.3l of fluid. Fluid requirements different during day and night. Kidney more efficient at filtering during the day. Normal to wake up once or twice to urinate. To reduce: hydrate enough during the day to avoid evening thirst. 10 hours after wake may only need 150 ml. Drink slowly. The rate of fluid intake impacts things, so consume water slowly. When exercising: need additional fluid to baseline. Galpin equation: average weight (pounds)/30 equals number of fluid in ounces on average to consume every 15 minutes. 2ml water per kg bodyweight per 15-20 minute on average. For me approx 120 ml. So in two hour session around 750ml. If exercising intensely/hot conditions or sweating double the above equation. Double fluid intake. Feeling dehydrated: ingest more fluid. Thirst is decent guide but not perfect. Try avoid fluid with caffeine. If intense exercise have electrolytes with fluid. Hydration can enhance focus and reduce brain fog. Brain needs to stop working as hard when it knows there is enough hydration. Tap water: Hard water has magnesium and calcium. This increases pH and isn't bad. DBP's may be too high. Ask for water analysis of your own tap water. Look for high, moderate or low levels of fluoride. Fluoride can affect thyroid hormones negatively, even in 0.5mg/l. Use water filter that removes fluoride. Second best option is to leave water out at room temperature for most of the day, then take the top 2/3 to drink. Magnesium 8.4-19.3, i.e. hard water has enough high pH and can be good for you. If lower than that may not have the same health benefits. Boiling water does not decontaminate it enough and may worsen some chemicals. Temperature of water if colder it is slower to absorb. If it is very cold it can alter digestion. Don't worry about it, have it what you desire, e.g. on a hot day cold water can be desired. Different forms of water. Distilled water has magnesium and calcium removed. No need to drink distilled water. Reverse osmosis. Can be good but expensive and no evidence is better than filtered water. Hydrogen enriched water. Not necessary if enough magnesium. If magnesium too low, more hydrogen can make nicer to drink and absorb better. Make by adding hydrogen magnesium tablets. Only once or twice a day. Not needed in hot or carbonated water. To determine water quality the pipes and filters are important. Look at the filter mesh on your tap.

Hi! Wanted to note that one of the main reasons that water treatment aims to decrease water hardness is to limit the contamination the water picks up from pipes as it travels to your home. The magnesium and calcium (and other hardness) ions like to leach matter from the interior of the pipes. If we limit the ions present in the water we can limit this source of contamination. Water systems will often run tests through cut pipe sections from the infrastructure to estimate the maximum hardness that can be tolerated in the existing infrastructure.

Thank you so much for everything. As a healthcare provider I have been recommending your podcast to clients and colleagues. You have an amazing way to dive deeply into everything and just give facts.... something sorely missing in the world in general, and healthcare specifically. You've said that you read all of the comments, and to request things in the comments, so here goes: Please do an episode (or more) on fascia, especially Rolfing (structural integration). One of the original Rolfers and faculty members lives in the Bay Area (Michael Salveson), so he'd be a great guest if you need one! Also, please do an episode on lipedema (not lymphedema), since there is SO little info out there. Thanks for all you (and your team) do!!

As a massage therapist who does both myofascial and lymphatic work, I support this idea :). I would love an in-depth episode just on the lymphatic system in general. But yes, I just had a new client yesterday who has struggled silently with self-diagnosed lipedema most of her life and finally got an official diagnosis. I even had one client who knew something wasn’t right and sought out multiple medical professionals and was repeatedly told it was nothing - one doctor even told her it was probably just folliculitis and maybe she should stop shaving! I was the first person who told her it looked like lipedema to me. Definitely need more information out there on this topic!

When i filter water, i let it sit for a little bit to let the bonds form before drinking it. I find it tastes better and feels better when i drink it. I get this from the yogic tradition of keeping drinking water overnight in a copper vessel. The copper has antimicrobial properties and letting the water sit overnight gives it a certain quality that they have seen as beneficial.

Hey Andrew you mentioned you don’t recommend distilled water overall, but I find the things that remain after the distillation is so gross and disturbing. I know the distilled water is overall very soft and lacks minerals so I add 1/2 tbs of Himalayan salt for every gallon of distilled water I make. A tad bit off subject but I just have to share this. One of my favorite "lecture/interviews" was exploring dreams and sleep with Dr. Gina Poe. I had a very intense dream that was about water filtration and minerals. The person talking was incredibly detailed but kept talking with no one asking questions. It seemed as if the dream was at least an hour long. The lecturer stopped when a phone rang-that's what woke me up- just to find your podcast (this one) had somehow turned on and became part of my subconscious snooze state. Crazy, how much I absorbed -of course- it was a telemarketer calling me. I got a "two-fer". Dr, Poe would have a field day with that one. Thank you-I've been concerned about my well water lately and this is a tremendous help.

I drink distilled water for the convenience of making at my house >20 cent a gallon and no need to replace any filters. I want a good balance of electrolytes though. I asked ChatGPT and it said to make the water have a good amount of electrolytes it wanted me to do this- can you please say if this is a good idea? Thanks for being a positive influence G, I haven't smoked weed since watching one of your episodes! To make a gallon of distilled water have enough electrolytes, you can create a basic homemade electrolyte solution using common household ingredients. An electrolyte solution typically contains minerals like sodium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium. Here's a simple recipe to add electrolytes to a gallon of distilled water: Ingredients: 1/2 teaspoon of table salt (sodium chloride) 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) 1/4 teaspoon of salt substitute (potassium chloride) - Optional, to add potassium 1/4 cup of sugar (or a sugar substitute) - Optional, for some carbohydrates Instructions: Pour a gallon of distilled water into a clean container or pitcher. Add 1/2 teaspoon of table salt (sodium chloride) to the water. This will provide sodium and chloride. Next, add 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) to the water. This contributes sodium and bicarbonate ions. Optionally, you can add 1/4 teaspoon of salt substitute (potassium chloride) to the water. This will add potassium ions to the solution. If you prefer a slightly sweet taste or want to include some carbohydrates, you can add 1/4 cup of sugar or a sugar substitute of your choice. This step is optional and primarily for taste, as electrolyte solutions used for hydration during intense physical activities often contain carbohydrates. Mix the ingredients thoroughly until everything is dissolved.

Hi Prof. Huberman! This podcast was a bit difficult for me as a chemist. The discussion around structured water sent me down a depressing rabbit hole of low quality literature. I think it is important to point out that while water does have a pretty strong dipole and can be oriented in a strong magnetic field (the original work on "structured water") there is no reason to believe that you can create it, store it, and drink it. The moment you remove that magnetic field you erase any ordering through random thermal motions which are occuring at truly staggering rates. Obviosuly water at interfaces has thermodynamic deviations from bulk water but they are also rapidly being exchanged with molecules in the bulk. Long story short you cannot drink "structured water" outside of standing next to an unshielded superconducting electromagnet.

I love it how you are able to explain things so people with a wide range of knowledge levels can understand, and everyone learns something new. I thought I knew pretty much everything there was to know about water, but here I am after watching your 2+hour lecture. What I found really interesting was that you spoke about letting water rest at room temperature... it totally makes sense, but on top of it that is what my grandma used to do back when I was a child. She would pour tap water into empty glass bottles (that originally held mineral water) and stored them in the pantry. She used to say that it helped for the chlorine to dissipate, and sure enough, the water tasted much better the next day. No idea where she learned about that, but listening to you talk about it brought back some sweet memories of her (besides the things I learned).😊

Then I have coffee. For next 9 hours I drink 5-6 , 8oz cups of water plus 2 cups of tea. I have stopped fluid intake by 5:30pm. Stop snacks by 7:00pm. I go to bed at 10:30pm then proceed to wake to pee about every 1:50minutes. My bladder is emptied , I require using an in-out catheter each time. My Urologist has not been helpful. I'm frustrated. @thehandliesthandle
@thehandliesthandle Жыл бұрын
its about time someone intelligent informed the public about it, without making it sound like a conspiracy theory, which people will dismiss as paranoia. i believe that its likely that fluoride was added to the water with the intent to improve dental health, and it was a mistake, rather than a conspiracy, but it is a little suspicious that they haven't corrected this mistake. another thing to worry about is that fluoride absorbs to a certain extent through the mouth. in rats its absorbed entirely within half an hour to 60 minutes of it sitting in the rats mouth. so a small part of the fluoride we put in our mouth will absorb. anyway, he mentioned glyphosate. thats an important one. we should avoid glyphosate at all costs, because its clearly carcinogenic, and also seems to distrupt brain chemistry which i found suprising. i try to eat organic, because most food has glyphosate in the U.S and canada, and the only way to avoid it is organic food, and you can often find organic food that is not expensive, although some organic food is not worth the price

Great episode! I have always been skeptical of all the water marketing that plays on fear. But this episode convinced me that it’s time to start drinking filtered water in our home. Upon doing more research I came across some good critiques of the Berkey systems despite their big following-namely, that they’re not independently certified like other systems are, which means they’re not even allowed to be sold in CA (except smaller models). I would love to see some commentary from Huberman Lab about the importance of certifications for water filtration.

I'd be very interested to hear more about plastics in the water and it's effects/sources, both tap and bottled water. Also the response to the added fluoride I usually get is "it's good for your teeth" which whether true or not clearly doesn't outweigh the cons, but perhaps an episode on dental health would help a lot of people out as there's a lot of conflicting information on the subject. Thank you for your detailed analysis and am very appreciative that you able to break down the health benefits of a lot of the esoteric forms of water to whether or not they create higher ph water. Also appreciate that you offered a more cost effective method of achieving this water with magnessium tablets. One glaring question that came to my mind was why not just use the cheapest base available to most of the world, baking soda (sodium bicarbonate)? It costs $1 for a box and could be used in the same way you used the magnesium tablets added to drinking water once or twice a day.

Hey Andrew, I will skip describing how much your podcasts have helped me improve my life. I'm constantly trying to convince my family and loved ones to begin implementing many of the tools you've been pointing out. I hope it'll be possible in the future to have greek and other languages subtitles in your vids, as it is really a struggle for many to understand all the english biology terms (i know many of them are already greek origin but still :P), especially for the older ppl. Keep it up!

Thank you so much for all your work, I am at episode 3, love your passion and enthusiasm, in the UK apparently it takes 20 years for research to be integrated in the health system. Thank you for making these available to everybody. I have already pre ordered your book! No pressure.

It’s good to see that you are recommending filtering regular tap water. I don’t agree that distilled water is a bad idea especially if you add a trace minerals mix after the process of distilling. I have been doing this for 5 years and I know that my water is much cleaner and still well balanced with minerals. Great podcast and overall well informed!

It seems everyone is terrified of being accused of being a shill or "selling something" that they go out of their way not to make any recommendations for a product. If you can afford it, there is zero reason not to have filtered water for your family.

I'm still on the look out to see any hard evidence (not just speculation) that distilled water is harmful. Our bodies are pretty good at maintaing electrolyte and mineral homeostasis, if it wasn't our ancestors would have all died easily. You get plenty of minerals and electrolytes from eating fruit, vegetables, salt, and other foods. Far more than you need from water. Ofc absence of evidence is not evidence of absence, just because we haven't seen evidence that distilled water harms people doesn't mean that it doesn't. However, I don't think there is even theoretical backing for it. No theoretical or empirical backing puts the idea that distilled water is harmful into the realm of quackery. As absurd as any other unverified claims about water.

@@offensivearch Your right, The only negative aspect people claim is that because distilled water is pure it pulls minerals from the body. however if you eat a balanced diet this will have negligible effects anyway. Distillation naturally occurs in nature when it rains! People have been drinking that for as long as our timeline goes back so I’ll take my chances with my counter top distiller.

Yes, it was very disappointing he spent one whole sentence on this topic… didn’t even bother exploring it further - at all. Yet spent several minutes trying to soften/explain how $80 can be a lot of money for people. Isn’t your health worth a measly $80?

This is very rewarding topic for everyone to know. I learned so much. Thank you very much from the Philippines. I used to live almost all over US for 30 years.

There is a lot of controversy over the Berkey Fluoride Filter. It’s supposed to use a filter media that leaches toxic aluminum levels into the water. I was wondering if you could help bring clarity to that issue. Thank you for your work, it’s helped me expand my understanding of so many subjects!
