I get it and I'm to blame. You have mounds of gear from the reviews I've done. Now granted this isn't "crap" but high quality, useful stuff for your systems. It can still overwhelm you. If you don't have a system!
Nutnfancy to the rescue. In this fun and funny video I'll share with you how I stay organized in TNP. Every facet of the Project is a lot of work but with my diverse subject matter it would be impossible if I were disorganized!
The benefits of being organized are proffered at the beginning. Then I give you a step by step process of eliminating a confusing, non-functioning "organizational" system and give you one that might be better!

LTC Nutnfancy: This video was right on time for me! I was JUST talking about those heavy mil plastic Ziploc baggies with my wife! I thought this was going to be a video about making food and water storage a priority, which it is, but as an adult with legit ADHD, organization has been a HUGE struggle for me! I just wish I had the money to devote to that much storage equipment (most expensive are good shelves!). I suppose this will have to be done in smaller increments due to financial restraints. We're also struggling with my oldest daughter who also has ADHD, but my mother has been working with her. If it were up to me, it would be a case of the blind leading the blind. My youngest daughter, in stark contrast, is VERY tidy and organized! Thanks for all the great tips! Going to share this with the wife to get her onboard as well!

You can tell the difference in a good service tech just by seeing how they keep their vans. A good service tech has a squared away van where you can easily find tools and materials. Generally, people who are squared away and organized are typically more successful.

I can speak with my entire life's experience on this. And the state of a tech's van, does not indicate his experience or his competency. A lot of factors go into it. Does the company pay for time to clean/organize it, or does he have time to clean/organize it?

@@Lysander_Spooner Well said. Time is the main issue. As a tech, being organized is very helpful and efficient but it isn't easy to find time to clean often. Investing in the Milwaukee packout system has helped tremendously with keeping tools and smalls parts organized though.

@@celicablues I can't say if its related to competency but I've had messy vans. I've finally come to terms with never being allotted time to clean up. So now a large part of the planning is on where and when the garbage goes in. If you do it right you can keep a pretty put together van with little time invested. There is a way!

I've found that cat litter tubs work well. They have to be strong enough to contain thirty-five pounds of sand, and they come with carry handles. And I have to buy them periodically anyway.

Quite frankly, I needed this. I'm a massive procrastinator and have kept putting this off and the problem has gotten worse, which makes me not want to do it even more. The idea of just making piles in a room will definitely make this go faster. I'm going to go get supplies tomorrow, then come Wednesday when I'm home alone I'm going to start tearing through everything. I need to make it a more organized mess before I can truly organize everything.

I'm already doing this. Have it all divided into sections of the house too. Another tip - for your Bug Out Kits, advice I got from a fire chief is to create a list of everything you need to bug out, based upon HOW LONG you have to bug out. It's very common that you might have pre-evacuation notices hour or days in advance. Other times you might have just 3 minutes. Other times you might have 15 minutes. You can pack A LOT more on your truck in those additional 12 minutes, so have a plan - group those things together if you can. As far as clear plastic bags - I don't buy them, I just save them. They add up when you're ordering gun parts, most come in a quality plastic bag. The other container to keep an eye out for is AMMO CANS. Occasionally you'll find some store doing a clearance on larger caliber (like 30mm, 80mm mortar) cans. The .50 cal cans are great too, but small. Use plastic ones for areas that are temperature controlled, use metal ones for areas like your basement, outdoors, etc. Large ammo cans are amazing. Last tip, if you live in a large city, go to a USED office furniture supplier. They often have commercial grade lockers, storage cabinets, shelves, etc. The commercial grade stuff is often bomb proof, and will outlast your lifetime. The used furniture suppliers are willing to barter and keep an eye for specialty stuff - so let them know "I'm looking for 10 feet of locking cabinets." I have some industrial racks that will last 500 years, 15 feet long, 8 feet high, 18 inches wide, it's all thick steel construction, totally adjustable, found on craiglist for $200.

wife and I have a small house, 780 square feet above ground with a full basement. We have major preps stored in the house. And musical instruments and art supplies. And room for visitors to sleep. Shelves man, shelves. And things hanging from floor joists and bins stacked 6 feet tall and so on. But it is all neat, organized and easily found. Oh, there's no kids in the house.

Oh Yeah, this hits good... My Dad's whole house looked about the same as your father in laws office. When he passed me and the wife spend weeks sorting things to make sure we don't accidentally throw away important stuff. Weeks. It cost me thousands in disposal fees. I want to say probably close to 6k just for container after container (yes, container) of stuff to dispose of. It's wild. Definitely tainted the memory of my dad after sorting through literal garbage for weeks. I'm still mad as hell thinking about it. I've always been organized. Comes somewhat naturally to me. Growing up there is probably the reason why.

I've been using these for years and highly recommend them. I do maintenance on a few old rent houses so I have lots of odd fasteners, plumbing fittings, etc. If I get a phone call with a leak I can grab my box of appropriately sized fittings off the shelf and go fix it. I recently picked up a bunch of 12x18x3 steel boxes for my truck. They're basically little metal brief cases. I'm working on building a mounting rack for them to replace my extended cab back seat, but my plan is to have it where I can just grab my little case of tools for whichever thing I'm fixing. Before that I just had tool bags full of junk loose everywhere

Shit. My basement looks like the warehouse at the end of Indiana Jones. The Ark of the Covenant may actually be down there. I should buy stock in a container company. Dozens of shelves. Over a hundred large storage bins. Probably an equal amount of smaller clear ones. Maybe 200 ammo cans. It still gets disorganized. When you have that much stuff, you pretty much need employees to keep track of it. 🤷🏻‍♂️

6:12 Your wife's dad's room is not that bad, it looks pretty organized to me (this was my first thought, haha). That being said, I think I have a good mag organization system. Instead of the baggies, I bought 99c walmart plastic pencil boxes. Each container is for one type of mag, which works for me bc I like to have at least 100 rounds of mags for each firearm. When I go to the range, I'll select the firearm and then grab the corresponding pencil box. I even load the mags before going to the range so I don't have to waste time at the range, and these pencil boxes are sturdy enough to hold loaded mags (though if you're not careful, they will open). I bought every color of the pencil boxes so that I could intuitively color code by caliber. Black is for 9mm, Blue (police) is for 40sw, Green (army) is for 45acp, Red (hot) is for 357sig and 357mag, Pink (weak) is for 380acp, and Orange (toy) is for 22lr. These pencil boxes are labeled with the same labelmaker, and I store these pencil boxes into separate bins by caliber.

I've already incorporated most of these suggestions in my own struggle with organization. On the plus side, after building floor to ceiling shelves from wall to wall on one side of the garage for storing bins I was able to free up enough room to build a work bench for reloading and other projects. It was a great feeling to finally have a permanent place to mount up the press and equipment.

Moved into a rental house and went from a closet to a spare room for storage! Did a similar method to this and it’s frickin awesome. I don’t have everything in closed top bins but baskets so it’s easier accessible. Great vid as always

The shallow hefty bins are GOAT IMO. Deep enough for most common items, tough enough to survive ordinary use and you can't bury things so deep you can't find them

Yeah, you got me to buy more knives than I would ever need, but a lot are cool. My Cadet is probably my favorite. The Pioneer is about the same knife, but just seems so much larger and heavier. In my experience, the clear bins are the worst for cracking. It's just the formulation of the plastic I think. The old style Rubbermaid bins were the most indestructible but the shape is horrible for anything but clothes. I have a mixture... large black bins with yellow lids from Costco (Stick with one manufacturer because they are different sizes). Larger clear file storage bins with flip top lids. Smaller clear bins for smaller stuff. I've had the worst luck with Sterlite brand. Even if the bin material is okay, the lids tend to crack.

I'm a big advocate of milk crates for stuff that's either in a temperature controlled environment or stuff that's "durable" and doesnt care about the temp or humidity. I get em from Menards because they often go on sale. They suck for tiny things or huge things, but for organizing tackle boxes, scopes, silencers, "range kits" etc they're awesome. They're particularly awesome because they stack and have built in handles.

I use Gaffer's tape for labeling if I don't use an actual label. Gaffer's tape (is similar to duct tape, but...) doesn't leave residue when removed and it has a cloth type finish so the marker doesn't rub off over time.

Alittle more high tech, but we just did this with our extra fire gear at the station. But instead of labels we got QR code stickers. Scan the code and you can see what is in the bin with pictures. So if we want a certain type of turnout coat or a specific radio model, we can find it without opening or unstacking any bins

filing cabinets are a great way for storing things. can always pick them up for cheap on your local selling site or garage/rummage/yard sales. i use them for tools in the shop and other "shit" in the house. if youre creative, you can beef up some of the filing cabinets to make it harder to get into. labeling stuff "grandmas knittings" and the like will keep most people out of things. also playing tetris with your stuff in your filing cabinets or bins will save lots of space. dont throw stuff into your storage system, tetris it in. use up all the space. anyone think nutn has labeled his label maker? im going to say.....yup. thanks nutn for letting us into the craziness that is your realm. we need to be masters of our own insane realms.

For adding color-coded labels to clear storage bins I use a Brother P-Touch Label maker with 1" (24mm) white label tape. First, I put down a strip of colored Tape (colored Duct Tape or, more preferably, 2" 3M 471 Vinyl Tape) and then I lay my P-Touch label centered over the top to create a nice, clean color-coded border around my bin labels. PRO TIP: use a cotton ball soaked with Isopropyl alcohol to clean and degrease the surface. Your tape will adhere much better.

As far as tape goes duck makes a glow in the dark tape that's white in color and is great for writing on and will keep a low glow for hours.

I am pretty sure this video was directed at me LOL! My organization definitely needs work. It drives me crazy when I can't find things that I know I have somewhere. I do have some bins and ziplock bags, but my stuff is still a train wreck. My biggest challenge is getting rid of things, even though I don't use or need them any longer. I have a ton of product boxes that need to go. All of this creates stress and frustration. This video motivates me to go get some bins and get to work!
