Probably most people don't have a "prepper warehouse". When I was still working, people in the ER where I worked were constantly spending extra time looking for whatever they needed for patient care. Finally someone came up with the "Where Is It" Notebook. Everything was cataloged to make it easy to find. I have adapted that to my prepper supplies. Makes it really easy to find what you are looking for! And if it isn't in the notebook you know you don't have it.

We use 5 gallon buckets in the garage and label them: ropes, extension cords, bungee cords, tarps, ect.. One section in the garage is for "cutting tools". Every time I rearrange things I spend a few minutes to give my husband a tour to explain my system to him since these are tools he uses. One section in the basement is designated for canning supplies, one for seed starting with grow lights. Things get moved around every once in a while as I get creative and find new systems.

Tips for small apartments or houses: buy those shoe storage plastic to hang on doors and use them to store food. Bookcases uses them with baskets or bins and store food. Install shelves on walls either kitchen, bathroom, hallways, and store things on top. Big Plastic bins to store in a garage ropes, plastic wrap, tape, etc. Stackable Shoe racks and place shoe boxes with food items, medicine, etc. Heavy duty plastic shelve unit storage (find a place to fit it) these are great they have them thin and tall (Amazon, Home Depot, Lowe’s).

I had everything jumbled together at first. I finally pulled everything out, sorted it, wrote it down in a notebook, packed it by date in bins, put labels on the bins, and put it back away. When I add to a bin, I write it in my notebook and on the paper I have on the bin. I keep the notebook in my filing cabinet. It was a pain to do, but I love how I can see everything that I have.

I keep a clipboard on the back of my pantry door with a list of everything I have and where it is. I also use a permanent marker a whole lot, and I also have some chalkboard contact paper, so I can use a chalk marker to label my dehydrated preps, and my totes I keep my full Mylar bags in. I also use a lot of post-its to mark pages of books, jot down something I need to remember to put in one of my binders, or what I will be canning/dehydrating next. We put our grocery list on a dry erase board of the fridge and we keep a container for the markers and an old piece of towel on the fridge (you can get magnets at most hobby store, Dollar Tree, or even some big box stores like Walmart). My short term memory was decimated when I went through chemo, so I've been lucky to come up with some ways to help myself remember.

I am older and have trouble getting items from my lower kitchen cabinets. My mom too. We bought bins that fit our cabinets at Dollar Tree. That way I don’t have to struggle to get things in the back of the cabinets. I can just pull the bin out and grab what I need. Some of the bins I bought even have handles. I also label each bin. One thing I also used for cans or tall items like syrup, oils, etc. was the dish pans. They are sturdy and easy to slide in and out. Also, I tried my best to keep the heaviest items on lower shelves and lighter items higher up.

I began making pantry grab meals after watching one of your you tube videos. Today, I was organizing them and the thought occurred to me that these would make great food bags to send with your kids, give to needy neighbors, when you just want to take food to someone but you know everyone else is too and also even for barter. Just be sure to include the recipe. We are going to visit our kids next week and instead of trying to figure out menus when we get there we can bring some of these along to have on hand for when we don’t have time or ingredients for a meal.

I read a great idea in a fictional book about a grid down situation where the main character had compiled buckets with food in Mylar bags of a variety of foods. And he used those buckets to store excess food that he could give to neighbors or refugees. I really liked that idea. When I compiled my buckets I taped a list to the outside of the bucket with what was in the buckets. If I have to, I can get into them of course. But, oatmeal, rice, beans, lentils and such can be gotten cheap if you buy the 25 pound bags at Winco, Sams club or Costco.

I stash things behind doors. Thin boxes or skinny shelves fit well and you can get a surprising amount there. I go UP, putting extra shelves high in closets; (put lighter things, and things in labeled boxes there). I have nicer boxes on the tops of my bookshelves that hold seasonal-wear and things seldom used. I go DOWN, with extra shelves under sinks. I put totes on the floors of closets. I also stack totes in corners of rooms and in my laundry room. . I keep extra blankets, linens, towels, etc. stacked in the high closet shelves or blankets, throws and pillows just stacked on dressers, or corners of rooms. I have a large free-standing cedar closet that my husband picked up cheap many years ago at a thrift store, where clothes and blankets go, and I picked up a big blanket box the same way, (it's like a "hope chest" with a padded seat). A china cabinet and a hand-me-down small 'credenza' holds some of our dishes, which frees kitchen cubboards up for food, as well. Furniture like that can go anywhere , look good and can hold a great deal. I opened-up the back of one section of low kitchen cabinets so that I can stack cans, bags and boxes in small creates and into thin, clean wastepaper baskets that I can slide in and out so that items don't fall all over, then I can see what I have and can get to them easily. I have ALWAYS bought extra everything while on sale; that way we never run out and we have eaten well, plus we have had good-quality toiletries and extra everything we need when emergencies, illness, hard times and guests,(sometimes unexpected), come in.

I recently add two 6 shelf cubes behind my sofa. I have a wall hugger reclining sofa but was able to place two 2 ft x 3 ft cube shelving unit behind it laying on their side instead of standing up. . I filled the bottom level cubes with heavier supplies like peroxide, alcohol malox, pepto. and so forth in those bins from Dollar Tree. The top level shelves in bins I filled band aids, over the counter medication, night light bulbs and so forth. You know the lighter of these prepping supplies. I also place casters on the bottom of the unit so I can easily move them out to get to the windows behind the sofa. My sofa moves pretty easy on the hard wood flooring so there isn't much hassle to get to the cube units, I have a 6 wide hall way that I put a number of 9 space cube shelving units in 2 high that has my crafting supplies and more prepping supplies in. They all have matching bins from Dollar Tree so everything is nicely out of site.

I like to store like items and like cans together to see what I have at a glance and inventory purposes. I do similar to you and have a bucket of items to make a meal or a few days worth of meals and snacks. These are items we travel with when we are staying in a condo or place with a kitchen or camping. In addition, I like to do this with my number 10 cans; I have boxes of items ready to go in the car if we need to leave the house in a hurry. For instance, I will have one box of number 10 cans that is all different things I would need for baking, like flour, salt, shortening, baking soda and powder, etc. I have another box that has the spaghetti bites, tomato powder, crumbled sausage, bread mix, et cetera. The boxes from the LDS food storage work well to hold the number 10 cans, and I have made up a list of all these kits that I keep so I can include them in my inventory: an Italian kit, a Mexican kit, a soups and fast meals kit, etc. In addition, I keep buckets for birthdays and each holiday of traditional items as a morale booster for the whole family.

Powerful readers in my first aid kit, I really NEED that!!🤓 SUPER small print on those tiny bottles and tubes. By the way if I knew how to put a picture up here I would show you how right you were about less food/smaller containers. My Walmart filled our order for two large cans of corn beef hash, (I was replacing the cans we had eaten) with very tiny cans, about the size of a can of Vienna sausages. 😳 I didn’t even know corn beef hash came in such a teeny can. The grocery man told my husband those were the biggest cans they had, 🙄 so they had to use those small cans as substitute for my lg can order. 😵💫 Keep the good lessons coming, I need them all, and so do all my family and friends.😊

I have used washed out plastic cat litter containers lined with a trash bag for baking items which is separate from my Holiday foods. I’m in the process of trying to find a new apartment & staying with son & family who think I’m crazy, so I’m not able to freeze my rice & beans yet! Hopefully they will be okay! Water is stacked up, and I’ve got canned meats that need to be sorted! Haven’t had a chance to go to the unit to sort bc I’m involved with my church & get pulled into baby sitting a lot.

I have never frozen my rice and beans, just put them in Mylar bags in 5 gallon buckets with oxygen absorbers. I have frozen flour but I have heard you can just put bay leaves inside instead.

I don't freeze my beans and rice. I vacuum seal them into serving size bags.

Good ideas! I like bankers boxes. Their designed to stack heavy items. I'll take a felt tip and write things like shoes or whatever. Inside I have things like canned goods

Last winter a squirrel got in and chewed up my bankers boxes for a nest. Huge mess!

I have been instructed not to label your prepping supplies on the outside of the container. So that it is less obvious what’s in it if someone is looking to steal your supplies do not use clear containers Part of storing prepping supplies is the need to store in multiple places to avoid theft. Never put all your stuff in one place. FYI. The first place they will look is the obvious- ie your basement

You could Colour code the Preps, with Coloured dot stickers on the boxes, & write what's what in your inventory. 👍🔴⚪⚫🔵

If you have a little bathroom cabinet, Ikea sells small, hinged plastic containers that fit the standard shelves very well. They work great for stuff like makeup, q-tips, etc.

Sad question: How do you use vinegar correctly for cleaning? Thanks. 💗
@elizabethcope15023 жыл бұрын
You can add white vinegar to dishwater to kill germs. Vinegar kills 99% plus. I don't measure, just drop dash in.You can add in laundry wash to clean or @ rinse cycle as fabric softener, maybe 1/8 to 1 cup depending on wash items. You can mix up with water & spritz counter tops. Leave it on to dry. Kills germs & is food safe. You can also add essential oils to boost cleaning power. Citrus peels in pure vinegar makes a wonderful cleaner. You steep peels in vinegar & strain. Then you make a dilution in water whatever strength you want. Hope this helps. No quesition is a bad thing. Knowledge is power. God bless.

@@elizabethcope1502 Just make sure your counters or the seal on them will not be harmed by using an acid like vinegar.

Can someone refer me to a guide to edible/medicinal plants/mushrooms? There are a lot of books but I'm looking for the most beneficial. Also, I was informed that labeling cans with a magic marker is a great idea in case the label falls off the can.

Can someone explain to taste please? Everyone says that but I don't understand the meaning
@anneinohio82323 жыл бұрын
Hi...my best guess is ‘to taste’ means ‘add the spice (salt, pepper, hot sauce, or whatever) to where you like it’. My husband LOVES hot sauce, so he adds that to his own plate, and I don’t add any. I hope that helps. 🙂
