When I first started working on my art skills my expectations were in the wrong place. I hadn't seen many examples of the whole process (planning and early stages.) This led to being more self-critical and held me back for a long time. So I really appreciate artists that share their mistakes, rough paintings and messy early stages. Mine always look messy to begin with. ☺️

Yep you're definitely not alone. I don't think people share that part of the process enough, but it's totally normal! Keep bein' messy!! :)

ah yes, the dreaded ugly stage. a stage that sometimes you think will never end 😐such a cute little halloween bluebird 😀

That is an important topic. I've recently started using watercolours and this medium has its own kind of ugly stageXD I am a bit impatient and still learning the media, but it is so much fun! The painting looks so lovely, this is the style I really love=)

Oh gosh yeah watercolour is soo hard because you can't really COVER UP the mistakes along the way hahah kudos for pursuing that! Thanks :)

I’ve just started with watercolor as well! I’ve struggled with the ugly stage, too. I have to remind myself to walk away and let layers dry before continuing.

Amazing video Kaitlin! Watching this video got me motivated to finish a project I'm working on at the moment 💪 I think, especially younger artists, that being able to see someone's progress is very beneficial to the learning process as well as boosting productivity. ❤️

Another wonderful video, Kaitlin! Having your base sketch available digitally to start over, is just the best (and why haven't I thought of this myself...). I usually stop after inking, afraid to mess everything up or working in a cheap sketchbook that hates markers or paints..

It's definitely helpful! I do find that when I trace my drawing onto the paper I'll paint on that it always feels a little more stiff than the sketch, so that's kinda frustrating, but being able to make adjustments to the drawing really easily and save it outweighs the cons for suuure!

Wow! A very fun painting to watch. Lots of great comments about trusting the process :) What brush do you use? I have been looking for a good brush for fine details and putting in lines... It seems the brush you use helps you get really small strokes! I am sure some of it comes with practicing brush control, but I am hoping to buy a smaller brush that does not split/splay out. I am hoping to use it for outline certain parts of my watercolor paintings! Do you have recommendations? Thanks! Your channel is so fun to watch :)

Aw thank you so much! I honestly use any cheap brushes I can get my grubby little hands on, so I think I'm mostly using a pack of small acrylic brushes I bought from Michaels. I also use watercolour brushes from Etchr. I usually just buy new brushes when mine start to splay, but I'm pretty good at making sure no paint dries on them so they last me a surprisingly long time. Thanks for watching! :)

What kind of colored pencils do you use? I can't believe how opaque the white and yellow came out over the darker tones!
@kaitlinhoyt2 жыл бұрын
RIGHT? They're prismacolor premier! I only used student grade before this so when I got these ones I was legit shocked how much of a difference there was with the opacity!

Have you ever gone back to one of your first paintings and fixed it the way you had wanted it to look like?

Hmmm not that I can think of... sounds like a great video idea! :)
