These are excellent tips. I discovered a couple of them through sheer trial and error. I'm lucky to have had an instructor who taught that art should be fun. I get really annoyed when people try to gate-keep different styles or judge others when it is all so subjective to begin with. I have a quick question if you don't mind. Do most professional artists stay with a specific style for monetary or other reasons? I know finding your style is important, and it can change several times in a lifetime, but it seems like artists who are actually making money (or at least actively selling) have very recognizable art. Is it to keep a certain aesthetic? Or just hit their stride and doing what they do best? Maybe a mix of things? OK that was more than one question LOL.

I think if you paint from your heart (rather than that logical side of the brain) then your art style just comes through. It took me years to find my art voice and although I will continue to explore new techniques and play with different materials (I am always learning) I know my art style will always come through. I don't really think it is about keeping to one aesthetic as much as being as authentically yourself as you can be (create the art without the inner criticism). I believe if you let go and just create, your style will come through and be recognizable by your audience. Thank you for watching, I love talking about art!

I don't belong to Facebook groups. I think that the Facebook owner of the group was probably envious of your work! Kudos for being kicked out of a group for your art - that means you have made it! It has taken me a long time to be happy with my art and to not look for approval from others. My sketchbooks are full of 'bad art' but it is a place for me to learn and to experiment. I am enjoying your videos very much Krista Irene. 😊

In my opinion posting your art on a Facebook group is a waste of time and energy anyway. It won't advance your skills or further your art carrier. I don't need positive comments from amateur painters just to boost my ego. I don't need their criticism either. Further more I'm not learning anything worthwhile about art and technique there. In one art group on Facebook one of the adminstrators wanted to force his political opinion on others. I then left the group. Never posted there anyway.

I agree, it was a great lesson learned. I never joined another group. I think I was looking for acceptance rather than praise but the lesson I learned is to accept your own self and your art journey.

Very interesting video! and thank you for sharing your experiences. For me, art is like taking a break from everyday life and it helps refreshing my mind, so it's therapeutic but I also try to improve my drawing skills, but, sometimes I just give myself the permission to be messy 😄🥰 Thank you!

I have learned so much from your art. You are so young and I’m so old. I went to art school years ago but I didn’t learn any of the things you talk about. My art always frustrated me until recently. Your attitude has freed me to make MY art….just for myself. So many of the artists I have known plan to sell their art before it’s even begun. And if they don’t sell it, they think they are a failure. They never know the joy of just creating. Thank you.

I use a lot of crayola. I'm sorry you had that negative experience with an art group. That must have been frustrating. I don't know why people take art so seriously. It's fine if it's your job I guess...but don't force that seriousness onto others. Some people like myself just do it for the process and fun of it. Sure I do like my sketchbook looking cute...but I only work in sketchbooks. Keep doing it for the joy of it. I agree I think less than perfect art is awesome!

WOW, you are sooooo spot on!!! 1. I think you are ABSOLUTELY RIGHT about keep going, even if you get rejected. Those people who kicked you off Facebook ( those experts!) seem to forget about the customers who may not know so much about art, but like your work because it stimulates the imagination, as a result, you sold a painting, I bet those experts would call your customer uneducated in art, shame on the experts! 2. I agree 100% with you on getting your art out there( if that's your goal) and not be afraid of rejection. I'm a gigging guitarist who plays instrumental music ( jazz/fusion, classical/flamenco, & chill music, but also play blues/Rock & metal) and am emuned to rejection because it has happened to me so many times before ( been playing for 50trs now) and I still have an audience & am still gigging, don't let anyone stop you from your dreams. I'm also getting back into art after 50yrs absence, you are VERY, VERY INSPIRING & VERY, VERY TALENTED!!! I just subbed to your channel and will support, thanks for sharing your thoughts, Keep On Creating, Rock On & God Bless.

It actually helps me to meditate and detach for a bit, then a feel more fresh and creative. I like that mindfulness book also called 30 Days to Overcome Fear of Rejection by Harper Daniels. It's so easy for our thoughts to run wild and cause worry.

Thank you so much for this! I’m so glad I found your channel. You are saying the stuff I believe in. And also with seeing all the super pretty, clean art out there I take this as a reminder to stop worrying about my art not looking like that. With shaky hands (it’s a neurological condition) I just cannot make those same clean lines as someone else does. ❤❤❤

Awe... Don't worry about FLAKE book, and the ridiculous things that occur on there. It doesn't take much for them to throw you out of a group or restrict you that's why I personally stay away from them, to begin with. Your artwork looks like you have fun doing it, and I like the clothing and earrings that you come up with. 😊. Ps... I was just thinking? I would categorize the little bit of artwork that I've seen that you do, to be rather whimsical? Personally, I have always loved whimsical art.

Thank you for this, I really appreciate your kind thoughts. Just in the middle of a similar experience with my art group. I really love the people in the group but my tutor seems to hate my work and she isn’t afraid to show it. Last week she went around the group, praising each member of the group in turn but for me, she just said nothing - just skipped past onto the next student. It has happened a few times but last time was pretty blatant and very embarrassing Not sure how to handle her and I have wondered if she just enjoy humiliating people.

Wow, I am so sorry that happened to you. No one should be ruining the experience of creating your art. I personally feel like an art tutor or teacher should be creating a safe space for self expression. Your art is a reflection of you and truthfully no one should be making you feel less than or make you feel like you are being left out. I hope you find a group that makes you feel happy.

As a mostly self taught artist, it concerns me that someone in charge of an art group, and because of it their influence is important to the artist in that group, is so very narrow minded.

Yes, to this day, I still can't believe I got kicked out. It really hurt at the time, I was shocked but the lesson for me was to do my own thing, ignore critics and have fun. Seeking validation from a group of people I don't even know wasn't a great idea anyway.

I belong to an in person art group, with two other women. We’re friends on Facebook as well. Whenever I post my art on fb in my feed, they’ll “like”them, but never once have they gave me a compliment on my posts. I’ve made complimentary comments on their art. I thought artist friends and art groups were supposed to be supportive, it doesn’t seem so in my experience. Of course, maybe it’s just them, this is my first art group I’ve belonged to, so I have no prior experience to compare it to. I already really struggle with a harsh inner critic and perfectionism. I’ll go long time periods without making any art because a painting I did didn’t turn out. The last time, in 2023, lasted a year.

I thought artist groups were supposed to be supportive as well! Turns out it really isn't. I rarely post my art on my personal Facebook and I deleted my Instagram. I have a Facebook page for my art and I have learned to post it for myself and then move on. The freeing thing that I realized was this - if no one seems to CARE about my art (that is how I felt honestly) then I am going to create whatever I want and post it on my FB page. Don't ever give up on your art, it is an extension of YOU!! That harsh inner critic is lying to you, look at your art and find one or two things you LOVE and keep creating!!
