How to overhaul a Shimano CB E110 coaster brake hub!
1. Remove the reaction arm from the bike frame.
2. Remove the axle nuts.
3. Remove the wheel from the bike.
4. Remove the sprocket (cog) by removing the snap ring with a small flat head screwdriver.
5. Measure how much of the axle sticks out for reference when you reassemble.
6. On the sprocket side loosen the locknut while holding the cone nut.
7. Remove the locknut and any axle spacers.
8. Remove the cone nut while holding the reaction arm on the opposite side.
9. Remove the first set of ball bearings.
10. Remove the right side dust cap.
11. The axle on the opposite side of the hub assembly will drop out now, possibly the brake pads too.
12. Remove the locknut from the reaction arm on the axle.
13. Remove the reaction arm washer and any axle spacers.
14. Remove the reaction arm.
15. Remove the left side dust cap.
16. Remove the brake cone.
17. Remove the second set of ball bearings. Everything should be off the axle now.
18. Now, inside the hub shell, remove the driver
19. Remove the last set of ball bearings.
20. Remove the clutch cone unit.
21. Remove the spring from the clutch cone unit. Twist and pull it out in the direction in which the spring is coiled.
22. Remove the washer from the clutch cone unit.
23. Soak everything in solvent and clean with a toothbrush, and dry with a rag.
24. Grease the clutch, washer and spring, and reassemble the clutch cone unit.
25. Grease the axle.
26. Grease the brake cone and thread it onto the axle.
27. Install the left side dust cap.
28. Install the reaction arm.
29. Install the washer, and then any axle spacers.
30. Install the locknut and tigthen it with the same amount of axle showing as before.
31. Grease the first set of ball bearings and install them next to the dust cap with the rounded edges facing away, toward the center of the axle.
32. Grease the inside of the hub shell
33. Install the clutch cone unit into the hub shell with the spring facing outward from the side of the hub shell with the larger opening.
34. Grease the brake pads and drop them into the hub shell with the larger edges facing outward from the same side of the hub shell.
35. Slip the axle through the hub from the same side of the hub shell. The notches on the brake cone should mesh with the brake pads.
36. Flip the wheel over so you can see the other side of the hub shell.
37. Grease the second set of ball bearings and install them in the hub shell with the rounded edges facing down, toward the center of the hub.
38. Grease the driver and install it into the hub shell.
39. Grease the last set of ball bearings and install them in the hub shell with the rounded edges facing down, toward the center of the hub.
40. Install the cone nut, and then any axle spacers.
42. Install the locknut but leave it loose.
43. Install the right side dust cap.
44. Install the sprocket and snap ring.
45. Clean up any excess grease.
46. Adjust the hub.
46a. The cone nut should be finger tight to begin with.
46b. To tighten the hub assembly further, turn the cone nut clockwise while holding the reaction arm.
46c. When finished adjusting, hold the cone nut with a wrench and tighten the locknut on the same side.
46d. To adjust the hub in the future all you need to do is hold the cone nut with a wrench and loosen the locknut to unlock the hub assembly again.
47. Install the wheel on the bike and wrap the bike chain around the sprocket.
48. Adjust the chain tension and check chainline. The wheel should be centered in the frame, and the chain should have just a little slack (single speed bike).
49. Tighten the axle nuts to secure the wheel to the bike frame.
50. Secure the reaction arm to the bicycle frame with the metal clip, screw and nut.
LInk - Shimano CB-E110 coaster brake hub installation detail.
tinyurl.com/shi...
Tip 1: 37:40 Standard cup and cone wheel hub:
1. To adjust, unlock the hub assembly by turning a cone nut counter clockwise while holding the locknut on the same side.
2. Loosen the hub assembly by turning the cone nut counter-clockwise while holding the opposite cone nut with another wrench, which effectively widens the distance between the two cones making the hub assembly more loose.
3. Tighten the hub assembly by turning the cone nut clockwise while holding the opposite locknut with a wrench, which effectively shortens the distance between the cones making the hub assembly tighter.
4. When finished adjusting, lock the hub assembly by turning the cone nut clockwise while holding the locknut on the same side.
Tip 2: To start from a stop with a coaster brake use your foot to push off. Remember to bring a screwdriver with you for the reaction arm in case you need to repair a flat tire and remove the rear wheel.

Thanks! Great video, Been using my coaster/700c set up heavily for about 7 years (i think) without servicing it! Was dreading ever having to open the thing up, but the hub was starting to get a fair bit of play in it so had to bite the bullet. Used your video and got it done with total ease. Thanks again!

Thanks! I was able to overhaul the hub on my cruiser that needed one long ago. Thought I wasn't gonna be able to get it working after removing parts and then realizing I had no idea anything about the coaster brake. Your explanation was simple and easy to follow, especially w/ the link to the diagram page.

I only say this because I have done so many coaster brakes and understand almost all the ends and outs. Truly not trying to be facetious towards the video. Please leave the brake lever, locking bolt, washer and cone on axel as is. Do not loosen these parts. Unless you are replacing one of them. There are no moving parts or greased parts. Reason, it keeps your location of where the axil was positioned in the hub prior to disassembly. Which will give it the same amount of axil that sticks out on each end of the hub after reassembling = Happy Happy

Great video. Just one thing. When removing the spring, twist spring with a light pulling force. Please do not pull spring out with a lot of force. Reason, spring can become warped or saggy on one side causing brake shoes not to engage properly together at the same time = DAMAGE.

Suggestion: Shimano SG-3C41 Universal Hub Kit Nexus (36H 3 Speed Coaster Brake) or Sturmey-Archer S-RC3 (3 Speed Coaster Brake Rear Hub) Installing the small "downtube shifter", still gives that minimalist, Fixie look.

coaster brakes are something I haven't riden in at least 37 years. They are great in winter weather and wet weather since they don't get wet. The question I always have is; I was a kid at the time. But, I never felt like i had the brake feel like you do with hand brakes. They are so easy to lock up. Bad news in wet weather. BB, what's your take on them? They are simple. But, they have issues like are types of brakes.

Coaster brakes have earned an well established place in the cycling world, but as I indicated at the beginning of the video, they are no substitute for a good front hand brake. I prefer hand brakes.

A great "How To" video!!! Have you ever considered doing a video, or a series of videos, on basic periodic (weekly, monthly, annual) maintenance? You really have a knack for showing and explaining details of a procedure, and I think all of your viewers would benefit from such information.

Nooooooice!! How does it feel to join me and the rest of us weirdos that run coasters almost exclusively?? I'm so excited. HahahI run coasters on all my bikes.. even my mtb/downhill bike is rear coaster with a front drum. My cargo bike and bmx 26er both run coasters exclusively. All about that clean look, no cables and perfect, modulated stopping power. I run shimano e coaster hubs on 2 of them. The cargo is a sturmey 3spd internal. Have been looking at getting a Velosteel single spd coaster hub to replace one of the shimanos just to try it out. Velosteel bought a bunch of old F+S factories and tech drawings/specs and makes old fichtel + Sachs hubs with modern manufacturing techniques/practices. Look forward to bro-ing out watching you ride a coaster. I think you'll feel even more in tune with your bike and the road. It definitely will take some getting used to, but I feel you might even become partial to coasters. Much love from the north!

My bendix brake pads dont have notches. Never even heard of them having Notches before. - I just place mine where the lines or grooves in the pad is sideways so when you stand the wheel up straight, the lines in the pad will travel in the direction the wheel will spin.

I'm so glad I found your video. I've been thinking of doing this but wondered why no one else was. What are the disadvantages of a coaster break?
@BikeBlogger
@BikeBlogger 8 жыл бұрын
Hi James Fulmer. A coaster brake makes it impossible to spin the pedals backward like when you need to reposition your foot at a stop. A coaster brake arm must also be clamped to the bike frame and that requires a screwdriver to remove if you need to remove the rear wheel.

Video on coaster brake repair could use some improvement. As a video for instruction, and teaching, the lighting could be a lot better, have over head and side lights, so it doesn't cast shadow on parts and work place, Make a clear shot of the assembly diagram, hold parts and diagram steady, and long enough to get a clear view. WEAR CONTRASTING COLOR OF GLOVES , Use blue, or green gloves , it is hard to distinguish the part from other parts, or the gloves when they are all black. Some war confusing, when you go back and forth on which side each part comes from ,and which side it goes back to.

@BikeBlogger

I think Shimano coasters are all around good. Histop is known to be noisy. Velosteel too although I've read if you only lightly pack it with grease it won't be as bad. Bendix were nice. Sturmey Archer I've heard mixed reviews. There is no particular best coaster brake to my knowledge.

I have used calliper brakes, cantilever brakes, V brakes and even Fixed Gear no brakes. I have never used coaster brakes, though. How reliable are these? Can these be modulated like calliper brakes? Does the brake drum get hot say on a long downhill?

I do use clipless pedals on my bikes, however, I would recommend riding platform pedals with a coaster brake until you feel comfortable with it. The problem with coaster brakes is you can't easily re-position your foot at a stop as many cyclists are used to doing.
