Hello there fellow pedal stompers. I am chairman of the British Coasterbrake Bicycle Club. I have several of these hubs that use this original Fichtel und Sachs design. Although it is called an English coasterbrake mechanism due to Perry and Sturmey Archer using it truthfully us Brits nicked it from the Germans after ww2 like we did the Leyland L60 and BSA Bantam engines, Dornier and DKW designs respectively, so we have to give credit to the true designers but enough rambling. I have been testing and abusing a Velosteel coasterbrake for over a year and so far haven't killed it. I have a bit of advice dont use thick grease on the five drive rollers. They will ride around with the driver instead of spragging out and gripping the hub shell. Use oil instead or a very light smear of Anti Scuffing Paste. When riding down hill occasionally pedal forwards slowly, this will stop the drive rollers from developing wear flat spots. There is a mod you can do if the forward drive clutch is being a bit intermittent. strip the hub, inside the brake band is the actuator with two tiny rollers, remember this for later and what holds the rollers from falling out is the drag spring collar. Two tabs rub against the inside of the brake band, bend the two tabs on the drag spring collar outwards for a bit more resistance. Dont overdo it, you dont want it wearing out prematurely. It's called a drag spring not because it likes cross dressing but it gives a bit of resistance to the brake cone that turns with the drive roller collar when driving forward, the five rollers ride up the ramps of the driver and grip the hub shell and away we go. The hub relies on this bit of resistance and the spring collar needs a good bit of lube on it too. Anti Scuffing Paste is perfect if you can get some. Remember I mentioned those two tiny rollers? Right these stop the brake cone from spinning when you brake. These sprag out when you pedal backwards. Ride forwards and brake hard and you'll feel a thump through the pedals, this is the rollers "indexing" in the grooves on the inside of the brake band. That's normal. It's easy to think there's something wrong with the hub. I did and that's what made me strip mine down and find out all about it. Happy coasting and remember, sometimes the way forward is back pedalling!

Excellent job. Judging by the colour of that old grease that thing has had a hard life! I have one of these Sturmey Archer SC hubs I've been meaning to tackle, I saw in my old parts catalogue that it has a roller clutch like a Perry or a Velosteel hub and this video has given me an idea of what to expect and how to go about opening it up. Thank you very much.

There's a special hook wrench to tighten the spanner nut against the brake arm. Since there is no locknut on the drive side the play adjustment is made with a proper cone wrench when the wheel is installed into the dropouts.

I heard in Sturmey's marine grease was only to be used in bearing race's not the rest of the hub, in which Singer Sewing oil is best, true?
@RJTheBikeGuy
@RJTheBikeGuy 9 жыл бұрын
George Slim For the SA three speed hubs I agree oil is a good choice, especially with the tiny pawls. There are probably much better oils these days like a good synthetic wet chain lube. But for a coaster brake hub like this, grease is fine. You want to use high temp grease for the brake parts though.

Repair. My friend`s bike sometimes brakes and sometimes he had to pedal back long way to brake. Solution: look at 4:25. In his right hand mister Bike Guy he holds the end of the sleeve that consists of 2 round fingers. Bend them a little outwards. Done, the brake will work now. The sleeve takes the 5 rollers backwards and then the rollers are powered by themselfs. When the fingers are worn, they don`t take the sleeve and rollers back.

Why have you not use high temp grease for all the components of the hub? The metal is conducting high temperature even on the components that have been greased with marine grease. P. S. Nice job you are doing with all this videos

8:30 the brake operating cone and drag spring has two small rollers in it. Do you know what function these do? I noticed that with a Velosteel which is the same design there is a thump through the pedals if I brake hard. I wonder if this is due to those rollers indexing in the grooves in the inside of the brake cylinder.

The rollers do index the brake actuator cone. When you pedal backwards the two rollers sprag out into the groove and stop the actuator rotating if you put very thick grease in. Like how thick grease will stop the drive rollers from spragging out against the hub shell.

What is that little port on the shell that you can see at the end of the video? A hole with a cap to provide lubrication?
@RJTheBikeGuy
@RJTheBikeGuy 9 жыл бұрын
Johnny Oil port for adding oil. With the greases I used in overhauling the hub, I am guessing it probably wouldn't need to be oiled. On the 3 speed hubs, oil would be necessary.

Hello, have a Sturmey Archer RX-RC5, 5-speed with rotary shifting and coaster brake... Can not find any technical, service or maintenance documentation on this or any other 5 speed hub... Wondering if you can help... Need to know how to adjust the bearings properly... And how to adjust the coaster brake.... Not how to tear down and rebuild, but how to adjust... I have extensive experience with regular bicycle hubs and bearing adjustments... but here I don't know how to disassemble to get at the drive side come and locknut... What the torque suggestions are... What grease to use, how often, what to grease... And in general the brake, how to adjust it, etc., it seems to me to be rubbing but have no idea what to do about it... Thanks....!

I had the same problem with Velosteel hubs. You probably applied too much grease around the rollers, so the clutch does not engage. Disassemble and hub and clean the rollers, then lube them with light oil. I use chain lube and it's completely fine.
