Why would anybody make more videos like this? Rj already did it a decade ago!!
@wanted-335 жыл бұрын
I know this is an old video, but I've got to say thanks RJ. This is what I needed to see. Being retired I needed another hobby, and buying old bikes, servicing them, and giving them to kids in the neighborhood was what I chose. I've learned to service the crank, front spindle, and headset already. The rear hub I saved to last as I figured it would be a bit more technical. But, this video made it look easy. Also, the first thing I learned was "Grease is good" after doing my first crank. :)

Someone a distance from me is asking if I can explain how to do a coaster brake so I've been watching for the best video on youtube to send them. This guy is messy and very awkward like a back yard mechanic, but he gets the job done. This video is 7 years old I'm sure he's gotten better. Anyone looking to learn how to service a coaster brake, even if you have a different brand, this video is still worth watching.

Hi, I've learned a ton watching your videos! I have a suggestion for setting the bearing preload on solid axles. I use a vice grip or a locked out nut on the bottom side while I tighten the cone nuts on the top, that way when you are tightening the top locknut the whole axle doesn't rotate. ;)

hey RJ i've watched this video maybe 5 times first time bike mechanic here and had a problem with a clicking noise in the hub, learned the inner basic mechanics of the inside, troubleshooted that the brake pads were obviously causing some friction, disasembled regerased still the clicking, and what it was was the Spring, the spring had been compacted during factory assembly i guess, so i opened it up and expanded the spring so the pads could fully disengage with the Driver, maybe this might help someone in the future, the spring wasn't disengaging from being too tight from the factory, i expanded with a pliers, packed with high temp grease and it's not clicking anymore.. yet thanks
@johnwade57476 жыл бұрын
The wear on the underside of the bearing race surface is indicative of too much end play ,probably from the same issue that made the stiffness of the spreader threads able to override the friction drag placed on the drag surface.Drag from the spring steel band should have let it thread in to brake and out to propel. HARD GREASE STAYS OUT WHERE IT DOES AS MUCH DAMAGE AS NO GREASE ON BRNGS. Very good video. I'm old, I like coaster brakes . Almost always fixable,usually no money!

The coaster brake on our bike hub for some reason is engaging when you pedal forward. A half turn on the wheel when you pedal and it is locked. Yet, if you spin the wheel it will move freely. This started all of a sudden. At first the wheel seemed a little hard to pedal, but after about a 10 minute bike ride it now will not pedal forward because the brake is engaged apparently. Any ideas? Thanks and very well done video. Phil

Thanks RJ for the overview of overruling a coaster brake. I used your video to aid me in rebuilding a SunTour rear coaster brake hub. I had great results with the rebuild, but when I put the bike on the road for a test ride, the coaster brake felt mushy and it took several feet for the bike to come to a complete stop. While in the rack, the brakes worked perfectly. Is there an adjustment I need to make to improve the stopping power of the coaster brake?
@RJTheBikeGuy8 жыл бұрын
Does the brake engage with just a little bit of backpedal, or do you have to backpedal more to get it to engage. With a bit of use I am guessing the grease will distribute and it will work better.
@KenMuenster8 жыл бұрын
Yes, as you back pedal, the brakes do engage, but the bike still takes a foot or two to come to a stop. I will keep checking the brakes to see if they improve. Thanks so much for your videos and your time!

Great video! I just did this to a rusty Huffy I found in the trash. First time for me. I just used regular lithium grease that I already had. And I reused all the bearings/parts after cleaning and the wire brush treatment. Question - It rides nice now with great braking but it makes a loud "clicking" noise when coasting unless I back the pedal off a bit. I understand what's happening and why I guess...is it normal? Is the mechanism worn beyond repair? Thanks in advance!
@RJTheBikeGuy4 жыл бұрын
Not sure what the clicking is. Maybe somethings what worn out, or damaged. You should have used high temp grease in the drum. Here is a video showing how the brake works. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gmPJYZhobamcqtE

RJ I have a quest ioN i'm prett ysure is a big negative. Is there a way to ahve a coaster brake and a traditional freewheel? I know of those coaster braike/kick shift hubs but I'm talking a more traditional. Basically my rear wheel taco'd, a direct replacement can be bought but i'm looking to see what other options exist since the bike is a sort of 'hey i got it to tinker with' thing.
@dvdfrnzwbr10 жыл бұрын
Is the rear wheel suppose to spin freely like the front wheel? It looks like the way that you checked it gave resistance.
@RJTheBikeGuy10 жыл бұрын
It's the fresh grease, especially the hi temp grease. It's thick and sticky. It will turn more freely after it is ridden a bit. But the action is smooth.
@captainprototype187 Жыл бұрын
I have just done this. I got it all to fit back after three tries. But now it doesnt turn as smoothly as it did. I can feel it kind of jerk sometimes when I spin it. It feels like a few ball bearings dont roll smootly. But this wasnt so before I disassembled it. Is it just a lack of grease? Im pretty sure I resassembled it right after the third try.

@97warlock6 жыл бұрын
This was my main question too when watching this. Never heard of greasing the pads ....... Wouldnt wanna try that on a car haha
@TBonerton6 жыл бұрын
This is metal on metal contact with potential for high temperatures. Grease must be used to prevent seizing up. Car brake pads are made of different materials, like ceramic.
@97warlock6 жыл бұрын
The pads are glass smooth, Or close to it, the inner hub is also super smooth. There shouldnt be high enough temps to seize anything. The grease ...... will slide,causing longer time to properly stop. Or will require harder stopping power. .... This is really getting into the laws of physics.
@SuperShecky6 жыл бұрын
@@97warlock Pads in a coaster brake experience pretty high pressures and temperatures. Remember, this is basically a tiny drum brake. Doesn't matter if they're mirror smooth, the friction , pressure and heat is quite extreme, as one might expect from a brake drum about 2 inches in diameter capable of stopping a 26 or 27 inch wheel with a 225 lb rider (ask how I determined this). Grease on the brake pads themselves not only don't hurt braking power, they keep the steel from losing the temper and seizing. Or squealing before that happens. Don't believe me? Try assembling a coaster brake hub without grease on the brake shoes and see how it functions. The squealing and abrupt performance will be a clue that there is not enough grease. Or just trust the old service manuals. If anything, I pack the inside of the hub with much more grease than shown. Has never caused any problem at all.

If you started disassembly on the brake arm side you never would have not needed to hammer on it or remove the gear cog. These brakes are far easier to take apart than you make them out to be. I'm gonna stick with it to see why the brake had so much play in it. I taught my how to rebuild coaster brakes in the '80s. A couple of tips for the viewer out there, clean all the parts in gas then when very clean test fit and reassemble several times before adding grease. I use boat trailer wheel bearing grease from the auto parts store. Any grease that says ''bike'' on it will cost you far more for less quantity.
