I look back with old man nostalgia at a time before internet and Google Earth when overlanding (formerly called travel) took one down miss-mapped roads to a thing called serendipity. Our beloved resource was The People's Guide to Mexico by Carl Franz that told nothing about where to go, but all about how to go and the culture and idiosyncrasies of a beautiful people. We fell in love in and with Mexico many years ago and have had our home on the bumpy East Cape road for going on 20 years. Everything you two relate here is spot on. Good job. That said, I would say to folks that it is easy to get overloaded with TMI about safety or destination or roads. Just point her south and go. It's gonna be fun!

I love your comment! Its so inspiring to read this from you. To hear that we are doing it well from someone living life in Baja for so long was encouraging. Thanks so much!

You have a very sensible approach to traveling the PanAmerican. We’re at Andy’s place in Quito, Ecuador surrounded by European travelers. We haven’t seen a US overlander since Panama. Fear rules the US and it’s a shame.

Thanks, you are just a little bit ahead of us. We havent seen many either. But did find a couple from Texas here in Medillian, Colombia. Yes, It's a shame so many people fall into the trap of fear of travel. I hope we cross paths.

I have a late question. I have read that there is a federal law that imposes USD$127,000 fine and possible jail time for driving on beaches in Mexico. Do you know if this is true? I don't want to drive in deep sand, but it would be nice to camp within view of the water.

Does that even sound likely? Beaches in Mexico are public property but you aren’t allowed to drive on them. Watch what the locals do and where they do it and take your chances. We have a van and don’t go near soft sand cheers from the PanAmerican in Ecuador.

Hello, Now I can't say for sure everywhere in Mexico. But, it is common to see many people driving on the beaches, especially in Baja. This is a very common practice. I can't recall ever seeing a sign saying anything about regulations for driving on a beach. I often see locals in trucks and motorcycles driving on the beaches because it's better than the roads. Use common sense, but I wouldn't be afraid of any ticket. The genuine concern is ensuring you can recover your vehicle when it gets stuck in the soft sand. We are getting pretty good at that now, lol...

I have friends in Mexico who are citizens. They say not to travel by car in Mexico. It is not worth the risk. You are rolling the dice.
