In many cases the Bendix radio compass is not necessary for normal navigation, but I would not dismiss it so quickly as a NAV aid only for those with bad navigation skills. Radio compasses on both allied, and German aircraft are very useful for navigating home on the deck when you can't figure out where you are so easily due to not being able to see landmarks and terrain features. If you are low on fuel, wounded, and / or damaged, and at low altitude; you might not be able to climb enough to figure it out in time. Thus; I personally recomended taking them when they are available as a backup.
@SheriffsSimShack4 жыл бұрын
I do not dismiss them as "just for dudes who cant find shit". But often they come with massive antennas as well. After weeks and months on the new map, navigation is no problem anymore.
@iflycentral4 жыл бұрын
@@SheriffsSimShack I didn't figure you did actually do, but it could come accross that way with the way your worded that part of the video. I have by the way been in the situation I described above before with the 51. On the deck, leaking fuel, and wounded. Ran out of fuel just as I touched down on the runway. Had I not taken the Bendix; I would have ended up in a field somewhere instead of on the runway. No way I would have been able to climb enough to find my position before being out of fuel, and being bloodied would have made spotting landmarks difficult as well. Perhaps I should not have let myself get shot up, and then I would not have needed it. :P Just food for thought for anyone trying to decide whether or not to take it.

It is very useful when you're stuck at tree top level and unable to climb from damage. When you can't see shit, and your only reference is your general heading home, you can fly until it picks up a beacon.

Question... Manual Oil Radiator? I can switch it between auto/manual, but can not adjust it. Did IL-2 program that feature out of the Plane after this video was made? I know some planes allowed the switch from auto/manual , but all the "manual" did was to fully open the radiator shutters, it was an emergency control, in case the auto feature was damaged.

The 51 allows and allowed historically to adjust the oil rad. It's possible that the rad is fully closed in that moment and you can close it further

Excellent, thank you. I had asked you on another of your videos regarding your very low approach on final, if this is your preference or was this the typical landing method during combat conditions? I would think a somewhat steeper approach would allow for a engine hiccup/failure during those last crucial moments of the approach. Would like to know your reason for this very low final, appreciated, and thanks again.
@SheriffsSimShack4 жыл бұрын
There is no random engine failure in Il2. But regardless of that. The 51 does not like sudden change of AoA and a shallow angle reduces the risk of stall at the flare out.
@_Ariel74 жыл бұрын
@@SheriffsSimShack I wasn't aware of that, thanks. The other video of yours I had seen was either a 109 or 190 in which you used the same very low approach; I thought maybe a method of avoiding detection when landing with an enemy possibly following you back to base? Just was curious; I had seen a few others use this same very low, flat approach as well. As long as you land intact, I suppose it's all the same! Of course, in the war the engines, especially late war German with the quality issues, were not always a casual matter regarding reliability, and minor combat damage finding you out at just the wrong moment! :)

I can get to 610 km/h at sea level, but at 8000m i cant go faster than 475 km/h. This is with 105 octane fuel and 25% fuel, perfectly trimmed, full throttle and 3000 rpm. With 2700 rpm the P-51 is even slower. Is there a reason for this? The supercharger is set to automatic and the fuel mixture is ‚run‘. The plane should be faster at these heights
