This is a detailed, step by step, look at how I pack on the daily as a packer here at Skydive Deland. Once again this is not the only method to packing a skydiving rig.
In this video we will cover;
- Stretching your rig out
- Stowing you brakes
- Walking the lines up
- Flaking the canopy
- Laying down the canopy
- How to cock a pilot chute
- Putting the canopy in the Deployment Bag
- How to create line stows and double stow your lines
- How to close a skydiving container
- How to fold a Pilot Chute
- How to have a good time and SEENNNDDD IIITTTTTTTTT!!

Sal packed for me several times. Every opening was a good opening; no hard openings, no line twists. And he actively looks to make sure your rig is jump-worthy. I trust Sal to pack my parachute.

I am an old smokejumper who was a rigger for round chutes. You did an outstanding job describing with the right amount of humor. My last year jumping fires was 1970 and they didn't switch to squares until the last few years where I jumped. Awesome..... Not far from 80 I still want to get out and sky dive at least once before I auger in.

I've never gone skydiving and I can barely manage to fold my quechua tent in the same time it takes you to pack a parachute (7 minutes, not the duration of the tutorial), which is downright mind-blowing. Keep it up!

Learning how to pack a rig seems impossible until one time there is a 'eureka' moment and you 'get it'. Helping new jumpers learn to pack and jump their own pack is always so cool. Most packers at busy drop zones make so many shortcuts like not double wrapping rubber bands and making a loose closing loop. That being said.. this guy is epic, no doubt in my mind, could pack a canopy blindfolded in the dark.
@macobber

Only thing that worries me about going for my AFF. How can one ensure that the riggers at the drop zone you're learning at haven't become complacent from packing thousands of canopies over the years. Once I'm at the point where I can rig my own canopy, at least my life is in my own hands, but before that it's difficult to trust someone I don't know.

Sal....my summer jobs in 1965-6 were at Lakewood Sport Parachute Center/Parachutes Inc. I worked for Jacque Istel and Lew Sanborn and Lee Guilfoyle....I shagged canopies on the DZ and handed out clothing and boots and helmets to students....only packed one canopy while there, a PC the pilot, Skip Dolittle jumped to my joy ! I also witness the first jump Lee had with The Barrish Sailwing, an early square....I'm also a good friend of Baglock....those rubber bands brought back memories !....by the way, your a natural flyer ! I skydived at Deland for an Angle flying course. Sal packed my rig several times. Everytime was smooth, clean, and in heading. They were perfect openings and after I complimented him he would give me the credit and say it was good body position. I know what a bad pack job feels like. Sal is an Amazing packer and very humble. A small tip they taught me: when stowing the excess brake line, always stow it bottom to top (instead of top to bottom like you did). The reason being that you will pull the toggles DOWN to release them, and if you stow the excess lines from the top to the bottom, they have a slightly higher chance of tangling or getting stuck. Also, when the brakes haven't been stowed, you might want to run them down from the canopy to remove any twists in the lines, to prevent tension knots or uneven toggle pressure.

@MassisPipes
@MassisPipes Жыл бұрын
@@chrisfs150 I've since had some discussions about this with fellow jumpers, one of whom made a very valid point for stowing them top to bottom: when you release the toggle, chances are you canopy is faster than you are, thus pulling the loop UP, not down. Either way, I found out the hard way last weekend how important it is to decently stow the excess, when the slightly loose excess loop got caught in my toggle and caused a tension knot. Luckily I was able to free it with a sharp tug and had an uneventful flight otherwise.

I had a chance to go jumping today and your instruction on stowing the brakes was particularly helpful. I was more confident with placing the lines and excess after stowing the toggles. I never really knew which way they should go before. Usually, ‘whichever .’ Thanks again. [ note: I still rent and am not allowed to pack the rental rig. I do stow the toggles and lay the lines out for the rigger, however. This is so someday, when I grow up and can pack my own rig, I will at least have that part figured out.]

That’s awesome, I’m glad I was able to help you with stowing your brakes. That and uncollapsing your slider goes a long way for the packers.

Your a natural talent at explaining things but I think still I would have to pack a second chute with you side by side to get the feel of it. Have to be on a really slow day I know.

Trust me it took me awhile to get it down the way I do now. I learned from some of the best packers in the game at Skydive Deland and I owe everything I know to them. Solid team for sure. If you’re ever in Deland and need a packing class don’t hesitate to ask.

@@SalvadorChangg I'm in Indiana. I have one tandem jump. And trying to get the balls to do my first solo jump. Probably going IAD but AFF looks more fun. I'm new to my DZ and have social anxiety. I'm finding it difficult to get to know people at my dz. Loved my first tandem.
