Another advantage about silk base layers is that they dry so fast. On my last trip to Canada I took a pair of merino thermals and 1 of silk. The silk 1s would dry overnight when handwashed, which was great bcos the merino take a lot longer. And I didn't take jeans this last trip - too bulky. Wool pants and pleather pants take up less space and are much warmer. I did take a blanket scarf and absolutely no regrets - mine has zips and can also be worn as a poncho or even a skirt. And it doubles as a blanket during longhaul flights

My theory was that good stockings with a dress or skirt would be a good option but as an Aussie it doesn't get close to freezing, so good to have a Canadian input! loved the other tips too

Yeah no. As an Aussie who's done a couple of Canadian winter trips, trust me, if you think you can get away with that, you will DIE (unless you plan on not going outside at all) 😏

@@susie9893 luckily where I went it hovered around 0C and not much below so thick stockings/leggings with warm boots was fine for the most part! But I can imagine where it gets deep into the negatives it's better to have proper warm pants

Thank you for the tips :) I'm plant-based so I favour bamboo or hemp base layers and socks - super cosy, breathable, warm, and also thin for layering. There are lots of good places to get these nowadays, but I do like Thought. Nicer for the planet and the animals. I've tried organic cotton and recycled bottle ones, I would definitely go for bamboo or hemp over these.

I LOVE hemp! Highly underrated. What are the best places for hemp and bamboo basics?
@susie9893
@susie9893 7 ай бұрын
I've never heard of Hemp base layers. I'll have to look into that. Are they scratchy at all? I have some bamboo base layers and while defo not scratchy they just don't breathe near as well as merino making them far less warm. I'd only pack them for milder winter (NOT Canada) or Fall. Have you tried merino? Are you able to give an objective comparison (regarding hemp base layers)?

Great video! Packing for a winter trip can be such a challenge, but you've shared some really helpful tips here. I love how you broke it down into different quadrants based on the weather and the nature of the trip. It's so important to choose the right footwear and outerwear to stay warm and comfortable. And your advice on layering under everything is spot on! The tips on pants, turtlenecks, and accessories are fantastic as well. Thanks for sharing your expertise and making winter packing seem less daunting! Keep up the great work!

Hi Jess! I get my merino turtlenecks from Club Monaco, specifically the Julia model that I have in three colours. My silk-bend turtleneck is from the H&M Premium line. As for dresses, it's a mix. I recommend Wool& for merino dresses but I have a few dresses from COS, STAUD, and Uniqlo.

By the time I bought many of the items recommended here, it would be a lot cheaper to use a bigger suitcase to pack the things I already have that may not be as "efficient" to fit into a smaller carry-on. And I never pay to check a bag, anyway, because I have an airline credit card or have found other ways around the charge.
@leelens3
@leelens3 Жыл бұрын
I agree that buying everything new would be pricey, but it might work to watch for sales on items when planning a future trip! Or borrowing from a friend or family member.
@susie9893
@susie9893 7 ай бұрын
@@leelens3yes, it's surprising what you can pick up on sale. Bcos I'm an Aussie I don't have much use for extreme cold climate gear so I can't justify spending huge amounts of money on them. But I now have a very satisfactory collection of merino and other thermal items + solid outerwear options that I picked up in sales (many ppl suggest thrifted items but I've never had any luck in this area that way, and I've looked). And I still get use out of them when I visit colder parts of Oz and sometimes even in Sydney (some of the layering pieces). I guess it depends on how much wear you'll get out of those pieces over time - if you live in a very warm climate and only intend to do 1 trip to a cold climate then yeah, paying extra for checking your bag MIGHT be worth it (provided they don't lose your bag)

Oof I’m sorry to hear that. I would recommend silk and alternative synthetics. Cotton for top layers.
@susie9893

Silk is very viable and maybe you could look into some of the bamboo blends? I wouldn't suggest the >60% bamboo 1s, they absorb too much moisture in my experience and therefore aren't as warm. There are an increasing amount of blends out there in thermals so I would shop around. You may even be able to get away with a thermal with only 20% merino blended with a couple of other materials (I've seen merino and silk blends, silk and merino blends + a lot of other minor contributors from viscose to elastane). Unfortunately, in my experience, nothing beats 100% merino for extreme cold. However, I do suggest you look into recommendations from ppl who do winter camping or winter multi days hikes in places like Canada. Those ppl can really give you some very practical suggestions. Another thing to consider is silk base layers then a merino slim fit mid layer then another layer before your outerwear. I'm a big fan of many thin layers under a goretex jacket (vs a puffer jacket) - I hate being all bulked up unless I can't avoid it (eg
