I'm a fan of packing light and there are some great tips. Others have commented on weight limits, and I have to say that is the most difficult part. Here in Australia ALL airlines have a strict weight limit of 7 kilograms (15.4 lbs) of carry-on luggage per person. As you are boarding, you will likely have your bag weighed, and they will ask you to surrender it to be checked in below. Make sure you have a small carry bag/satchel to keep the things you need to take out and carry on board with you (ID documents, cards, books, devices etc.). Size matters, but so does weight. Some budget airlines let you prepurchase an additional 7 kilos. Don't wait to do it at the airport as it will cost dearly. Laundromats are fun to visit while travelling. You will meet real people. Plan a laundry day every 10 days or so, and you will manage fine with less clothing. Enjoy it all!

Man 7Kg is low. I've struggled with 10Kg I think from a German airline and 15Kg seems to be the norm for UK airlines. My general amount is 10-12Kg. But they don't usually weigh it if it looks under. Australian airport staff are not hard core though. Israeli airport staff even more so. They scan your carry on and manually sift through it.

We too like to pack light and have found laundrettes in USA or NZ /laundries in rural Peru and Asia, or handwashing, no problem. I'm surprised to see no mention of contraception or period products. Personal, but hey we're all adults here and "3rd person" information about different countries can be useful. I believe that contraceptives are illegal in some countries ? And I have found sanitary products can be sized much smaller in some asian countries for the more slender locals. Some travellers use moon cups which gets around the problem of disposal and repurchase off the beaten track / saving the planet.

I also have a cute tiny folding hair dryer with a small diffuser. I love it but depending on where I'm traveling, I'll probably leave it at home. I will say that the dryer came in handy more in India. Most of our hotels did not have a hairdryer. It rained the whole day we were at the Taj Mahal and I used it to dry my shoes...lol. Your approach is obviously great for many travelers, but I think (?) it's different if you're touring and not staying long in any one place. Recently in London we spent a few hours searching for a knee brace we thought would be fairly easy to find, and didn't find it because I need a small size. We wished we had brought one "just in case," so we could have spent more time exploring interesting sights. When I think back over my travels in the past year, I'm reluctant to spend my limited time trying to find something I could have brought from home. Obviously that involves tough judgment calls to avoid having to check a bag, because all the little things that "don't take much space" do add up!

Hi there, from Ouray, Colorado! Thank you very much for this great video! There is so much valuable information embedded within it! Ha...for the WHOLE video, I was generally thinking "holy moly.....that really is a lot of stuff they are covering; that is incredible that it fits in their carry on backpacks. Then.....you opened the curtains and I see you were using carry on suitcases. If those are of the biggest carry on suitcase genres, I assume they are like 45L or so? My wife and I are mid 50s; we hope to retire in 2 or so years. I travel for my current job. So, I would like to "practice" by start bringing a carry on backpack and a personal item backpack. I can see it will be fairly pricey to begin to obtain the merino wool clothing. So, I had better start procuring a few pieces every couple of months or so. In the interim, I'll just practice with my goodwill procured clothing hehehe. I was lucky to have a work trip this last week to a much bigger city than what I live in. So, I went to a sports store that had the Osprey 40L's and 46L's, and the Cotapaxi carry on models. When it was said and done, I preferred the Osprey 40L's. They seemed like they would be more comfortable if we had to do a longer foot movement that we'd like to. Safe travels!

@@awaytogether has anyone mentioned taking a rubber door stopper instead of the “bust” lock? I’m a first time long haul traveler and I’m a single female. Yes and when travelling different airlines have different weight and size restrictions. So these bags would be too big and heavy . In Thailand it’s 5kg for carry on luggage and several long distance airlines .

Exactly. Lots of different weights and sizes for cabin luggage to be stored in the overhead locker and under the seat in front of you depending on airlines with some budget airlines charging for cabin luggage in Europe. All the videos I've seen so far produced by American packing carry on, their bags are checked into hold luggage.

For hair, I can also recommend cleansing conditioner. This stuff works well if you are in places with less than stellar water pressure as it is easier to rinse out of the hair than shampoo. I have waist length hair, shampoo and I have a contentious relationship on the road... For jewelry, I've learned to take minimal. Earrings, one pair two-tone dangle, one pair each silver and gold stud. I don't take rings as your fingers tend to swell when travelling. I might pack a two-tone chain if I think I'll be going to a fancy place. This fit in a small changepurse I kept with my hair items.

What was your weight limit? Many airlines have a limit of 7kgs (15lbs) plus your personal item, so I'm amazed at how much you were able to take. I had a trip all planned for 2020 - 2 years in India using carry-on only (Osprey Fairview 40litre) at 7kgs plus small personal bag. Had it all weighed, organised and pared down. Then the pandemic busted those plans (not complaining, as we got off very lightly here in New Zealand). Just doing 3 months at the end of this year, and then longer travel when I'm able to.

I'm also curious about this. What is packed in the travel rolling suitcase plus backpacks definitely look like more than 7 kilos. I'm gonna be in asia for four months (4 countries/24 cities) and a LOT of the little planes there are very strict, I'm told. I'm thinking I'm gonna check my larger rolling case for that very reason, and then carry a small backpack and lightweight travel purse/bag as carry on unless you can convince me everything you showed was under the 7kilo limit. PS. I'm not a skinny thing like Allie - so larger sized clothes also take more space and weigh more (just like me! haha). That also has an effect on the size / weight of the carry ons. Havent seen anyone address this.
@jondarling Жыл бұрын
Yep, their bags would have been 19lbs/8.6kg. (I do the same pack for NZ) and take a risk. You do a dance with the personal item, but if you get an employee having a bad day you might be in trouble with certain airlines. Great video though.

This video was awesome. I haven’t traveled much but my favorite thing is using only a carry on bag because it saves you so much time. When it went to DR, I took a carry on suitcase (researched JetBlue thoroughly for requirements), a backpack that carried other things, and a Fanny pack that carried my passport, phone, etc. to have on hand. My biggest mistake was having the backpack not double as a beach bag. It was too bulky so I ended up bringing a smaller canvas bag in my backpack. The ski mask you had can come in handy if you’ll be doing activities that involves dust/dirt as well!

However, I always stay put in one city, so I get cabs to / from the airport so it’s fine to have a big checked suitcase. However, last summer I was in Prague and had to overnight in London on my way back to the US (unexpectedly). I ended up checking the bag at eh airport overnight instead of trying to drag it to the Heathrow Express. It worked but it was a big hairy deal, ate into time I could have been hanging out in London, plus the expense. Anyway, this summer I’m doing 2-3 cities in Poland and taking trains. I’m determined to carry everything on board. If you guys can do packing for six months, certainly I can manage for 8 days, right? Wish me luck. I’m looking at trying shampoos bars, we’ll see. That's cool and all, but I like my makeup, and always pack it. Smaller than what would be athlme,but, yeah, I want a full face so edays, and my brushes. Brill fav are double ended brushes. I pack a small microfiber face cleaning cloth for my brushes. I can't use them on my face, way so irritating. I do pack more skincare in moisturizer from home, sensitive. I love DHC washing powder for my face, super lush and delicate for my skin, dry powder so tsa no bother, a bottle lasts for ages. Great to pack, use and yeah. Recommend❤😊❤

This is the first video I’ve seen of yours and you may have covered this before but I’m curious as to what your bust items are from when you first left for Europe/Asia? What “comforts” did you learn to live without?

I am amazed at how much people are able to pack into carry-on...considering the very limiting weight restrictions and size regards carry-on....I am taking only carry-on and am not able to pack even half!..of what you guys are showing..and I am not even taking a laptop or camera gear!..Also...as for the door lock....I am going to carry a lightweight door wedge....Can push it under any door..(might need to add something underneath to add height depending)..And it stops folks just walking in when you need to have privacy even if they have a key like staff. ..It gives you time to react to someone who wants to enter for what ever reason..And it takes up very little space!.

I will say, we were close to the absolute limit of what our bags would carry. We only ran into issues a few times and it was (you guessed it) due to weight. Specifically in Asia. It was tough to pack for 6 full months and multiple seasons (extremes in temperature). If we'd only gone to one climate or very similar climates it would have been a little less. And good call on the door wedge! Thanks for watching.

@@awaytogether I know it could be annoying to carry things you feel are not being used..Space & weight etc...of course understandable...But you could say the same for a first aid kit...You hope not to use it..And may never use it...But you'd be glad to have it if anything happened...Considering they are not the most expensive things to buy..Here in the UK you can get one for about £4 or less if you look..So you could leave it behind when you need to travel by air..OK it's money...But no more than a sweet treat or snack in most places...so not to much when you really think about...And considering the kinds of countries and regions you are staying it..I would think it would be handy to have when needed...Just my thoughts on it..I am taking one to Japan for the very real posibblity of earthquakes etc...Though I could probably take my own advice, haha! and buy one when I get there to save weight for flying!.....As for the doorwedge..give it a try..see how you feel about it..Certainly lighter than the door gadget you had..and would suit most if not all doors...It just gives you time to react if anyone tries to come in unexpectedly..Not perfect of course, but better than nothing at all...Even if you lock the door...Staff have keys..>Sorry about my typin.

I enjoyed your focused, creative approach to carry-on packing. However, after watching it, I was shocked to read the carry-on weight limit for SAS going to Europe.... 8kg or 17.6 lb!! I don't think the carry-ons packed in this video would make the 8kg limitation. Already, that means that my 7lb North Face roller is a "no go." I have a 3 pound back-pack that may be the ticket. Do you have some strategies for dealing with this crazy low weight limit? I guess, "pack less" for starters, huh.

Fabulous video thank you, I’m being swayed over to the carry on only and it looks great but no one ever says how much their bag weighs. I feel like the weight would be more limiting than the size of the suit case. 😟

This video was awesome. Did you have any issue with your "carry on" being checked because it was too big? I have a slightly smaller carry-on in the same style, but it was checked because it was too big on every flight in Europe. It works fine in the US as a carry on, but it was not ok in Europe, and it was so frustrating. All the work I'd put into packing for TSA compliance and simplicity was a bust. How did this work for you? I need a new carry on suitcase but am super gun shy about purchasing another "carry on" size bag.

Thanks so much for watching! Yes, we occasionally ran into issues. At 45L, these bags are just under the maximum allowable size. However in Europe and Asia it tends to be more based around weight. On budget airlines like RyanAir, we would pay the extra $ for carry one and these always made it on the plane. With all of this stuff our bags tended to weigh in around 15kg, and usually 7kg is the limit. Not encouraging this, but you can sometimes skirt that by checking in online and just not walking up to the counter. :)

@@awaytogether Thank you for this info! That's essentially just what I needed to hear. I flew on Norwegian in 2020, from Boston to UK, and they checked our carry-on luggage (which are just a bit smaller than what you have). I can't remember now if it was a weight issue, or a size issue - but I was thinking it was a size issue. Now that I'm looking up their carry-on size limit I see that all US standard carry-on luggage is still too big for most European flights. I'll try your suggestions.
@Courtneyburns902 жыл бұрын
@@awaytogether only speaking from a UK perspective but our low cost airlines certainly it's based on the size of your carry-on and tbh strict the air stewart is but most get you to put your carry on in a frame, on boarding to check the size and you will get charged if it's too big. Also my carry on luggage has never been weighed and I travel from UK to Spain 2-3 times a year.

Could you tell us how much your bags each weighed empty and when packed? My carryon weighs 5.5 lbs and some of the weight limits I've encountered have hardly allowed me to pack anything. This is the only reason I usually bring a checked bag. It was hard to believe that all of your gear, including camera equipment, could weigh under the limit.

For most US airlines, the carry on luggage dimensions are 22 X14 X 9, does the Monos bag fit in the overhead bin?

Great info, thank you. One question, when traveling via foreign airlines with carry on weight restriction of 10Kg, how did you deal with this weight limit? I’m heading to Europe for a month in September and am trying to figure out carryon packing with that restriction.
@Jazzvibesicl2 жыл бұрын
10kg is hard lol, try and wear as many things as possible is all I can say
@bridgetcasement45222 жыл бұрын
I would definitely reduce the quantity of clothing & shoes. To me, this is too many items. I never travel with this much clothing when I’m gone for long periods of time. Most places have laundry facilities… Therefore you can wash your clothes. And how many times have we all travelled where we packed items and never wore them. This way you have a lighter suitcase for the airlines that require only a 10 KG limit.
@dianathedeh2 жыл бұрын
How much did your suitcases weigh after everything. Most budget airlines will charge you past 10kg. That's my main issue with hyper packing my suitcase

Great job y'all. I particularly liked the time-lapse packing part since most videos don't show that. Quick question: Your fav. adaptor at the end looks like the kind that would get pulled out of the socket when weighed down with cables. Was that a problem?

Would also recommend Triple antibiotic ointment, pain pills if you have any, pepto bismol is invaluable, and a mini umbrella is awesome. A butane curling iron was incredible as well. And finally a small container of soap for hand washing.
