Your list is good and can help people slim down. For our family, we agree on how many outfits we are packing to coordinate laundry days. Also importantly, we pack power banks, travel pillows that fit us better and clean, slip-on slippers for hotel or beach. We also pack enough sundries for the length of trip, extra baggies and at least a couple of kitchen size 13gal trash bags. We don't have to spend time shopping to refill and end up with multiple large bottles. If going to a more remote destination where shops take a lot more time to reach or abroad where language barrier could be a problem, we take a first aid kit with substantially more meds including cough drops. Adds more weight and bulk but reduces hassle and improves our comfort while in transport

Good point, sometimes it's hard to find toiletries so it's good to stock up before you go with those items.

Clothes and laptop are the two things that can really become a pitfall. I weighed my work laptop and power cords for two cell phones (one for the country I'm based in and one for the one my family is in), and that added 2.5kg to anything I carry, which means it goes straight into my personal item. Clothing can weigh a lot... I have the Hynes Eagle pack you reviewed which is 1.2kg (almost as light as you can go) but a jean jacket weighs 500g and a pair of heels (ladies size 6) is another 500g. Your tip about cottons vs. synthetics is gold, and for ladies I'd add that anything with a lot of gathers (more fabric) can add exponentially to weight. Also, agree that around 30 litres is as much as it's possible to pack with 7kg - fill up a 40L pack with clothing and it's guaranteed to go over. The other thing about post-pandemic packing is sanitizers and wipes, downsizing from a 50-wipe pack to travel size saved a bunch of weight too.
@OneBagTravels Жыл бұрын
Yep, trying to pack under 7kg with a large bag is very difficult. You can always wear the jean jacket on the plane though, so it won't count against your bag weight

I use a Porter 46L and you're right it's super easy to overpack and get into trouble... I use a scale as well which helps a lot. If I know i'm going on one of those crazy airlines that do the 7kg check (fortunately not too many of them) then I usually will wear a lot of my stuff. So my goal weight for my pack is 9kg (20 lbs) with the knowledge that I can offload 2kg of it in case I need to. My biggest weight item is my laptop at 3.5 lb, now if I can find a harness that I can strap the laptop to my back and wear my jacket over that it would be splendid since I can lighten my pack a lot!! So far I have not found anything like it... still looking :)

Thats very cool and useful for overhead, thanks. just a quick question , could you also take lets say a small 3 or 4 litre hip/waist/over shoulder type pack with out extra baggage charge ?? Thanks again. ,😊👍
@OneBagTravels Жыл бұрын
Depends on the airline and what is allowed by your ticket. If you have a carry-on, the hip back would be your personal item. If you're only allowed one small personal item then most airlines would consider a hip pack a second bag and may charge you for it. 3-4 liters is pretty small though, and if you put it over on your back they may not notice or care.

Love this kind of videos keep doing this kind of stuff! BTW, Would you rather bring lightweight cubes for toiletries / electronics and have them less protected or something more sturdy like the Peak design tech / wash pouch and have everything more protected even though they might be heavier?
@OneBagTravels4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Gonçalo! I always use a lightweight cube for toiletries, there's nothing I need protecting in there. If you're worried about leaks you can add an extra zip-lock bag. As for electronics it depends on what you're carrying. If it's just a charger, cables, battery pack etc. I use a lightweight cube. When I bring my camera I use a padded cube. Peak Designs cube is awesome, but I find it too bulky and heavy most of the time for what I carry.

@OneBagTravels4 жыл бұрын
Good question Raymond, it really depends on the airline. Many airlines let you take both a carry-on and a personal item without extra fees. However the trend is moving towards airlines allowing a personal item, and charging for a carry-on. Some airlines restrict by dimensions, others by weight, some have weight restrictions for carry on, but not personal item, and some airlines combine the total weight. You need to check your airline's rules before you fly. These tables shows which airlines allow a personal item and the sizes/weights. onebagtravels.com/carry-on-luggage-dimensions/ onebagtravels.com/personal-item-luggage-dimensions-updated-for-2019/ The idea behind a smaller pack under 7kg is that if you just have this one bag then you can fly almost any airline in the world without worrying about extra fees.

For toiletries, what do you recommend for those wearing contacts? The eyesight-related stuff makes up the largest portion of my toiletries by far because I also bring along my glasses and a few bottles of contact lens solution (less for shorter trips). Thanks!
@OneBagTravels3 жыл бұрын
Contact lens solution is a common product you should be able to buy in almost any country. Unless you need a specific product, I would just bring a small bottle and plan on picking up more at a pharmacy/drug store on the road.

Good question. The video was a demo of how much to pack in the backpack. If you want to not take much and do laundry every few days then you can wear an outfit from what you packed. I prefer to do this when I can because it frees up space in your pack for water/snacks etc.

I haven't done a review on those yet. They're very lightweight, comfortable, and look decent. Toebox is large, which is good if you like that, but if you have narrow feet you may find they fit more like slippers and don't really "hug" your feet. Not waterproof rain darkens the leather at least temporarily. Great travel shoe for city walking in Europe, not great for beaches or hiking.

@@lisabradley9288 It's supposed to be in a clear bag. Not every airport is strict, but it's still a good idea. My solution is to pull out my liquid toiletries into a separate ziplock bag, which I put in an exterior pocket so I can get to it easily in security. I put them back in my toiletry bag later. Your other options are to use all solid toiletries (eg shampoo bar, castile soap, tooth powder), or to carry your toiletries in a clear plastic bag all the time.

Airlines and tickets have different rules so you need to check the restrictions for your specific flight. 7 kg isn't a rule, but it's a more common restriction for many airlines operating in Asia. Most that have the 7kg limit only apply it to a single bag, however if you're flying economy you may only be allowed one bag, so your total weight will be default be 7kg. For example, Singapore airlines restricts weight to 7kg per bag, but for economy ticket you only get one bag, but first class you get two 7kg bags. www.singaporeair.com/en_UK/us/travel-info/baggage/cabin-baggage/

@OneBagTravels4 жыл бұрын
It's a good charger. My only gripe would be that it only has the one charge port. The flat, wide design can also make it tricky to plug in sometimes. The EU one works better because you can plug it in two ways, but the US one only plugs in from the side. If you like it I would hold out for the Mu Two though. It was supposed to ship this summer but they've had manufacturing delays due to covid. www.kickstarter.com/projects/muone/mu-two-next-generation-63w-dual-usb-type-c-wall-charger Check out the CARD 4-Pro too. Well you would wear the shoes. Weight is for the packed bag, and doesn't include the clothes you're wearing. However since my total weight was only 5.4 kg, even if I added the shoes it would still have been under 7 kg. These are fairly lightweight, Lems 9-to-5 shoes, they pack down small but are still kind of bulky if you're packing into a small bag like this.
