Lou!!! I am so happy to see you back here. Your perspective on all things, not just style and beauty, is a treat. Please keep sharing. We have all missed you. ❤

always good to see you :) I take everything out and make piles for donation, laundry, (sometimes also things which need to be sewn), and keep. I don't throw anything out. I feel that if I won't wear it, someone somewhere might. So I donate. Good job Lou. I'm sure it feels very good to be able to walk into your walk in closet. :)

I tried the Marie Kondo method several years back and all it did for me was overwhelm and give me a migraine, as I observed the state of my bedroom with all of clothing piled on the bed, resembling Mount Everest. What I have found that does in fact work for me is to shop my closet. Instead of taking things out that I do not want, I act as if I am shopping and my closet's contents are the items I have to choose from. I take out items that I would purchase again. For me, that works best. Might not work for all, but I find it to be less stressful and less daunting. What is left over after my closet shopping spree, I put into donation bags and out it goes. (out it goes....the same day).

We live in the Midwest, so we have all four seasons, and I don't have space to keep all of my clothes out year-round. Every late spring and early fall, I go through my clothes and shoes, putting away for example fall and winter items in boxes and bringing out spring and summer clothes. During this process, I also set aside clothes for donation or trash. This system has helped me to keep control on my wardrobe for many years. However, in the past few years, I've accumulated a lot of lounge clothes, which has become overwhelming, and I find it hard to give them away or throw them out. Currently, I am testing a method where I put worn clothes back on hangers but flip the hangers. At the end of the season, I will know which clothes I did not wear and can then decide what to do with them. This also prevents me from wearing the same items over and over again but try different outfits. This method works for hung clothes, but I haven't yet figured out how to apply it to the clothes in drawers.

Fellow (four-season) Canadian here. I use a similar system, but reversed hangers were driving me nuts (a little OCD?), so instead, I got a bunch of mini clothespins in two colours (50 each in black, and pink). I put a black one at the top of the hanger of all the pieces I knew I didn't wear often or at all the previous year, and every time I would wear one of the pieces with a black pin, I would either put it back in the closet without any pin (when I rediscovered how much I liked that piece), or with a pink one (when I was ambivalent about how much I still like it). At the end of the season, I quickly put away anything without a pin, quickly revisited the ones with a pink one, and forced myself to either try on the items with a black one or get rid of them. The drawers are a different beast...

Thanks for the inspiration! I will be tackling my closets soon but they are 5 times as full as yours are. I will be adding categories like a "needs to be mended" pile; and a "perfect for garage sale" pile. We all have those other piles that are the "will fit into when I lose 10 pounds", and the pile labeled "too big for me now, but keep as fat pants" pile. Some clothes will go in a drawer labeled "paint/chore/gardening" clothes. None of this brings me joy, but as always you are a hoot to watch!

I can only handle a small segment at a time. A couple of weeks ago, it was dresses. Earlier this week, it was shorts. I have a "donate" bag at the bottom of my hall closet. If I pull something to wear and just can't make it work, it's donated.

OK, I know I complained in my first comment, but I literally found $100 bill on the shelf underneath all my shoes! 😱 Those don’t just float around my house, so I have no idea how long that’s been there! For real this time, thanks Lou! 😂

I did that a while back. Now when I am tempted to just dump stuff on the floor, I remind myself what a pain in the butt it was to clean it all up. You have clothes with cement in them, mine have outside paint on them. Seem to be always painting a porch, shutters, railings, sheds and then start inside. One would think I would be smart enough to just wear the same paint stained clothes when I start I new project. But no! Love the shutters on your window. I have always wanted those in my house. Great video!!

I am going through this exact same thing RIGHT NOW. ALL my clothes are piled upon my bed (which I have been sleeping on every night for 2 weeks. The Keep, Repair, and Donate piles? I have no clue. All the shoes, my God the shoes, are in various piles around the room. My indecisiveness about what to keep or toss is crippling. I envy how brave you are for showing everyone your work in progress. Mine looks like the cross between a crime scene and a prison riot. I am at once terrified, overwhelmed and deeply ashamed. God help me.

This is why I never do the 'pull everything out' thing anymore. By the time I do that, I'm exhausted and overwhelmed, and yes I too end up sleeping next to 'The Pile'. Lol

How to clean the closet: 1. Get some cardboard boxes. 2. Put everything that is in the closet into the cardboard boxes. 3. Throw away the cardboard boxes. 4. Done!!

I go through my clothes usually ever season and think about if I wore it at all that season. I also think do I feel good when I wear it. I have never taken everything out of my closet at once I usually do just clothes one day then another time shoes and purses. I’d be too overwhelmed if I did it all at once!

I tried the Marie Kondo method and it didn't work for me. I recently found The Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning and it works! I got the book from my local library..it's a very easy read, quite short and extremely helpful. My husband and I decluttered our kitchen the other day and we got rid of so much stuff we never even use. I mean, we had FOUR colanders! Why? Now we have one. My stove top is clear and I can actually use all four burners. Amazing! I don't miss anything we donated, either. I highly recommend that book.
