I've been spraying flake for over half a century.... When you spray flake everything gets covered in flake. I've even seen it my sh#t a couple of days later... When we do lowriders, we normally skin the whole booth in clear plastic, then junk everything after including overall's, masks and boot covers. I normally use a silver base, then silver flake, but I've seen other guys going in over black and can understand why.... I started using acrylic clear as a vehicle, cause that's what we had back then, now I use intercoat clear.. Reduce your flake and increase your clear on your last coat of clear, let it dry, then scotch bright and air gun like you were doing. Do a couple of more coats of clear with no flake, dry overnight, or bake and 5 or 600 back, then candy... ( might not be possible in a commercial booth cause of time restrictions ) Try candy and flake on a full size truck.... I don't use coloured flake any more, only silver... if you're doing colour flake and hit a bit of high flake when you're sanding back it'll go straight to silver... Flake ( not sure if it still is, but it used to be ) anodised aluminium flat sheet, early pearl was anodised ally tube. I actually toured the Metalflake factory at Akron Ohio back in the early 80's.... before the days of Jon K..

Hey Gunny, the candy repaint came out superb from what I can see there is no sign of it ever having the partial redo which is a sign of the highly skilled professional painter that you are mate👌 It will be interesting to see a video with you demoing the WS400 Supernova to see how it sprays with the new setup as everyone else I know wouldn't use that gun at full fan, I don't have one but I do have the WS400 series 2 which is my best clear gun for getting a flat finish👌🙏👍John UK

You can use polyester clear coat to bury the flake, right? Duratec polyester clear coat, for example. Two thin layers of acrylic urethane clear coat just to fix the layers, one week later, scuff and apply 4 layers of very thick polyester clear coat. One week layer scuff and apply 2 or 3 layers of acrylic urethane clear.

You're right about the flakes stacking up. Doing the side of a 23 foot boat was hell. I've got a gallon of Subaru WRB (world rally blue) for my latest car. If you're willing to send me a can of flake, I'll try to smack it down ontop of the blue, and burry it in clear. Why not?

I don't know if this will help (or is the right way to do it) , the best way I found to stop the flake ~nibs/cratering is to clear over the flake and flow coat before putting the candy on . Probably not the right thing to do , but the last one I did is 10 years old and still holding up as good as you'd expect for candy 👍

All the painted things look good on camera. But if you look at the reflected objects in the clear coat and you can see them exactly like in the mirror then you can also see on camera that it was painted very smoothly :-) good work. For something like this, I paint with Standox Xtra clear varnish and 30 percent thinner

Thats neat job, But AutoSalon 2001 called, They want Nick to go back and enter his car :) if I had to take a wild guess, his around 37 years old. one size bigger flake is actually made by Glad and you can easily wrap a kebab in it. ive never painted flake that big, but its already hard enough with human spec flake jobs. There is no way of doing justice on this colour in a avideo, video actually makes it look bad, specially outside with overcast cloud reflections. and in the booth camera focus on the clears gloss reflection, and flakes stay out of focus coz of how deep they are layered in the clear base and extra coats, camera trips out. I cant believe the flakes are so big, one can be seen in the clear reaching out suspended in the depths of the coats stuck in time :) and it looks like the Flake is so big, it just creates its own lines and shapes on a perfectly straight panel, very unforgiving. My personal hack is, if A metallic doesnt lay well, due to temp, reducer, or gun etc etc. were that day, the universe has decided, it hates you. after putting the metallic base coat down, if it has a dryish look ill put a coat of blending reducer, not too wet, can use slow reducer aswell, needs to stay open. it makes the metalic flakes, lay down, that might of look dry, making it very smooth, specially if its a local blend, gets rid of the rings, coz they are caused by flakes on edges, that are not laying down, even if youve used a clear base. but I doubt it its going to do anything on these giant flakes, you would have to push them one by one :)

Insurance job got done and I ran in to the painter at the servo a few months later. He let me know it was an absolute prick of a job to get to a standard they were happy with. Looked pretty good once done though
@sinformantАй бұрын
Your insurance must have been top tier! Years ago my dad wrecked his Tacoma and when he got it back from the body shop the insurance company used the new fender, Hood, and bumper trim were about 10 shades lighter than the rest of the truck. They didn't care at all. I'm guessing that maybe at some point in its life the truck had been resprayed another color or something to a color that was different than the factory color that matched the door code or something, but it was such an obvious difference Stevie wonder would have noticed.
