I learn a lot from your videos, but what I like most is how humble you are. Not all professional artists are like that. Thank you for proving that good art is possible with less expensive supplies. Even Cotman paints are expensive in my country (Argentina) and I take good care of the few ones I have. Watching you paint with them was empowering. Thank you for this. ♥

Good morning Paul , your tuto posts at 4a my time and I’m up and ready to rock and roll ! This one is beautiful, thank you Paul , I’ve spent months studying and painting my tail off and I’ve been asked to hang some of my Paul Clark paintings in a gallery owned by world renowned WA Winery where I spent time glamping last week . I hope that is ok with you ?!? You should feel like a proud papa ! Lol, one of your students half way around the world is producing fine quality paintings because of YOU! Yes , I admit I watch a few others occasionally and I subscribe to skillshare as well but this is all you , I’ve listened and paid attention to you and watched every brush stroke ! Thank you Paul , blessings to you and Margot!

Wonderful lesson in the value of tonal contrast, as well as a foray into the history of watercolor. I too started out with Cotman paints years ago, and although I’ve moved on to mostly Daniel Smith, I still enjoy my early paintings and they have held up well as far as colorfastness goes. I know of well known professional artists who have used, and some who still use, Cotman paints. I guess it boils down to what the poet Robert Frost once wrote: “It’s knowing what to do with things that counts.” I have heard complaints that the quality of current Cotman paints have suffered since the manufacturing has moved to China, but the same arguments are made about other art products as well, such as Arches paper recently, since manufacturing has been outsourced, and even the W&N professional line. On another note, your little history lesson inspired me to research more about Cotman, which led me to a lovely article in The Quarterly Review which features the Greta Bridge which he, Turner, and others painted. The article was delightfully written, and I felt like I had had a wonderful ramble about the countryside myself through the descriptions of the architecture and art connected with the area, and all the great natural features as well. I am including the title of the article and author as well as the link because I don’t know if links are allowed. It is “Assignation with Greta” by Bill Hartley, the Greta being a river that runs in the general area of the Yorkshire Dales. The area is said to have “significant artistic and literary heritage.” www.quarterly-review.org/assignation-with-greta/
