I went to japan for two weeks. Fell in love with the idea of building gundams so dumped all my clothes out of my bag to fit as many in as possible. 3 PGs and one MG Ka to practice on 1st. Got back home and booked two more days off so i could build a gundam... Next day I stumble onto your channel. Now have fallen in love with the idea of airbrushing the gundams. Two weeks pass researching airbrushes (ordered Iwata HP-CS) then a compressor (ordered Bambi BB8) then paint (ordered Vellejo) then spray booth, face mask, building tools, weathering effects. Not built a gundam and have not layed down a coat of paint yet. I hate you.

Technique looks awesome. I liked the chipping, gotta try that one. One thing was how evenly spaced some of the chipping looked. It became a bit like a pattern and almost looked like old fashioned tiger stripe camouflage from the Vietnam era. Sorry to interject criticism, I teach painting and drawing at a local college so I'm always thinking of both strengths and weaknesses. I thought the airbrush layering was amazing, def took some notes there, thanks for the tutorial!

Wight King it is best to paint each part individually, but you can paint kits when there built but because of articulation and different colours and the need for masking it is better to paint each part separately. Great job man! I've a question, are your paints (primer especially) pre thinned? because when i use the same thinner from vallejo, it clog my airbrush (iwata neo cn) if i don't thin it, but i know it's suppose to be ready to use no?
@OrcPainterNerd9 жыл бұрын
Marcello Smiraglio Hi Marcello I know someone on the gunpla forums that has the exact same problem as you, but personally I never get clogs with the primer. I do however experience dry tip ( paint drying on the needle ) I just swab the tip of the needle with a cotton bud dipped in airbrush cleaner it only takes a few seconds to do and then I am good to start airbrushing again. I am copying a reply from a great dude called Colin in the gunpla forums Adventures in Vallejo priming part 3:I hate being defeated so I decided to continue my journey into the heart of darkness, aka vallejo primers. Since I had invested a fair sum of shekels into this stuff and the model air range, of which I was also having problems, I didn't want to waste them, or go to to the effort of having to list them on eBay. I continued to do more research, watching many hours of KZbin videos and reading many hundreds of forum posts, all of which brought me to the conclusion that 99% of the Internet is wrong and a waste of time. However, I did stumble upon the magic bullet when it comes to these paints-or at least to people like me who struggled to get results.Here it is, the big secret: it's all about air pressure. And thinning/prepping.So many people suggest priming at 20psi or higher, but the extra pressure is the cause of the dry tip and ultimately the clogging which gums up the nozzle. If you drop the PSI to around 10-12 and thin the paint/primer a little it does not clog. Here's my process which I developed today that has so far given me a few hours of clog-free painting:1. Don't go below a 0.3 nozzle if you want optimal results. 0.2 was a disaster. I have a 0.4 in my priming airbrush now and that definitely helps.2. Polish the needle and lube with Regdab or equivalent.3. Keep PSI between 10 and 12. Keep the airbrush about 2-3 inches away and prime in two to three super light coats, letting each one dry before applying the next (takes about 5 seconds to dry between coats).4. After each piece is complete, use a cotton bud soaked in cleaner to clear anything off the tip. This literally takes 2 seconds if you keep the bud handy.5. To thin the primer/paint, I used the following recipe: - Whatever amount of paint you need. Add to it: - 10% Vallejo Flow Improver - 10-15% Vallejo Thinners - 5% Liquitex Slo-DriTo make things easy, I measure by drops. So for my priming session, I counted out 100 drops of primer into an empty 10ml jar, and added to that, 10 drops of flow improver, 10 thinners, and 5 liquitex. Give it a good stir and away you go.I sprayed for an hour and a half, using 5 color cups of paint, giving the needle and nozzle a quick dab with the cotton bud between each complete piece. After spraying 2 cups of paint, I then washed through with a single cup of a 50/50 mixture of water and Vallejo cleaner. At the end of the session, I only needed to do that twice and run a paper towel around the cup to have the airbrush completely clean.Sorry for the epic post, I hope this proves useful to anyone else having problems like I was. This however does't solve the sanding issue, but that can be done by mixing some Future with the primer, or spraying a mist coat over it once dry. Not sure why, but apparently this makes the primer sandable.
@MrDhimolt9 жыл бұрын
This will definitively help, i'll try the secret mixture ;) but probabily by your answer i need only to play more with the pressure. Tnx a lot for the answer! :D

I don't know if you don't care or just have a safe kind of paint, but I keep seeing that its recommended to wear gloves while air brushing. Do you let your fingers get painted because its a bother to have gloves on? I've never air brushed before, but I have plenty of paint, some primer, top coats, and an air brush that I'm way too intimidated to use. also, aren't you worried that there is wet paint on your fingers as you remove the masking tape?
@xBMF9000x9 жыл бұрын
+Steven Coronel It's safe to not wear gloves if you aren't handling the parts directly. You may have noticed that he keeps all of his pieces on bamboo skewers with alligator clips so that he can manipulate the parts he's painting without actually touching them with his hands so no fingerprints will get left behind on the parts. Another reason that some people prefer to wear gloves is because it makes clean up much easier. Just snap the gloves off and throw them away, simple as that. Some paints can be harmful if you get them on your skin, but the stuff he's using in this video is Vallejo which is a water based acrylic paint and is completely harmless.
@xBMF9000x9 жыл бұрын
+Steven Coronel One more thing, airbrushing is actually pretty easy in general. The hardest part is getting the thinning ratio right. You're looking for a milk-like consistency. I will make one suggestion though. While some people swear by acrylic paints, I personally can't stand them. It may just be because the way I paint doesn't really work all that well with acrylics. I recommend using enamel paints because they're easier to clean out of your airbrush. Acrylics dry really fast and if you aren't quick with your spraying (as well as depending on the temperature of the area you're spraying in) then they can dry while they're in your airbrush and cause it to get all stopped up. Sometimes it can be a bitch to clean out when that happens. Enamel paints dry much slower so you can take your time while you're painting and I've noticed that it doesn't clog up in the nozzle of the airbrush. Anyway, that's my experience with these two types of paints. I haven't tried lacquer paints yet so I can't really give any tips on that.
@SC-cx9ti9 жыл бұрын
AWOLSpartan I keep seeing and hearing that air brushing is for the most part easy and effective, I just can't get the courage to actually fire mine up and put actual paint inside it. thanks for the recommendation about the enamel paints. That should be easier for a beginner like me to use.
@SC-cx9ti9 жыл бұрын
AWOLSpartan Woops, am replying in the incorrect order haha. Well I mean when we say safe are we talking more about the safety of the paintjob or our skin? Well I guess that changes with the base of the paint. but anyway what I was concerned about was when he was handling them with his hands when using the masking tape. I was thinking if I was doing it there would be wet paint and I would end up smudging whatever wasn't completely dry onto the piece.
@xBMF9000x9 жыл бұрын
Steven Coronel It depends on what type of paint you use. Acrylic paints like the ones he was using here tend to dry enough to handle within minutes so it doesn't really pose much of a problem as long as you're careful. The problem is that Acrylic paints are much easier to scratch than enamels or lacquers which is another reason that I made the recommendation to use enamel paints. They're a lot more resilient than acrylics.

I use the same Vallejo paints as you but when ever I assemble my gundams the paint chips how do you get past this ? Since it looks like you don't have any paint chipping
@OrcPainterNerd9 жыл бұрын
Daniel Ebling The key to having a really tough paint finish I find is to give plenty of time for parts to cure. I prime my parts then give them 48 hours to cure I then do all my painting leave for another 24 hours then satin varnish all parts leave for another 48 hours then I start to assemble the gunpla kit. I then experience very few if any l paint chips at all. I hope this helps :)
@danielebling9 жыл бұрын
Wand your using normal Vallejo acrylic paint ? What varnish are you using ? This we'll help a great deal thanks
@OrcPainterNerd9 жыл бұрын
Daniel Ebling I use vallejo polyurethane primer to prime the kit then regular vallejo acrylic paints ( model air range mostly but game colour and model colour will work just as well if thinned down with acrylic thinner) . I then use vallejo satin varnish to finish the parts off. It is very tempting to rush through the different stages of painting and some times the parts seem dry to the touch, but they have not fully cured to be able to assemble the parts with out chipping. I hope you have much better luck in future and you keep having fun with the hobby :)
