Painting the night sky and Aurora Borealis with acrylics can be challenging. However with the right blending techniques and by layering properly, it can be done much easier than you might think.
In this video I show you how to paint this starry night sky with the Northern Lights. I explain how to start from scratch and use layers to create soft blends of colors that shine bright!

awesome lesson as always! Thank you so much Chuck. You set the bar high and I appreciate the challenge! It may take me awhile to reach this skill level but I will keep working away at it and someday I know I will reach it!

Really enjoying watching this come together. I've not had any problem, with you using black, though it's been on rare occasion that I've ever used it straight from the tube. It does tend to draw the eye to it, and, in that aspect, I've seen you use it to very dramatic affect. I've always mixed either Raw or Burnt Umber with Ultramarine or Permanent Blue. I am very pleased you are going to be showing more of the painting/processes in real time!!! You are an exceptional teacher, so that will be of immense benefit!!! Thanks!!!

Thanks Mark! You are most welcome. That's nice to hear that. I really enjoy experimenting with straight black to see what effects can be achieved with it. Although this is a fun change of pace to learn more about not using it as well.

Another mix that makes some interesting shadow colours is Sap Green and Cad Red Deep...maybe with a bit of Permanent Blue added. The green and red, being complimentary colours, of course, go dark, and the blue adds the coolness for some interesting "life" in the shadows. I must say, though, you using black get my "wee bwain" working overtime ;-} I do enjoy watching you use it, but it is always a great, [and fun], thing to expand, in the use of colour. Either way I've seen you paint, the outcome has always been superb!

Please could you explain why you use oil paints on top of an acrylic base, can't the same effect be achieved using only acrylic paint?

I like it, and I am a bit puzzled at the virtual Burial of much of the reddish hues and the deep blues and violets, that seemed to exist, then died.
