“Throughout the entire portrait painting process you are making choices. Some are going to be good choices and some are going to be bad choices. That’s just the way painting is. We are ultimately aiming to have more good choices than the bad and that can only really come from practice.” I needed to hear this. Your video and teaching are excellent. I learned more in this video than I have in many I’ve paid for. Thank you and good luck on your painting journey!

You're very kind for making a video this detailed. I sometimes like the sketch too much I'm afraid to ruin it with paint but this has inspired me to actually sit and practice gouache portraits... Also I'm usually lazy because pencil sketches are way faster than setting up all the painting supplies and I'm very impatient 😅

I've been learning and practicing painting with gouache for maybe a year now, by myself, just like I did with pencil portraits, and when I see someone more skilled than me doing the things I learned on my own, it really makes me proud, like "oh my god, I do it the right way." Haha my painting professor would throw a fit if he saw your pallet. Honestly that is how my process goes too, my pallet tends to evolve like yours, not super organized (I tried to make sure the prof never saw it haha). I really appreciate watching your process. I took an oil painting class so I know a lot in theory about painting and color mixing, but I honestly didn't practice a whole lot during the class. I don't have a pallet for my gouache paints so I was really frustrated with the mixing part. I'm gonna try to make more portraits over winter break this year, and get a new pallet! @@emhuesart I used to stun the other kids in my art class by painting with linocut ink on a linocut roller. (About 3 inches wide). Lucky there were sheets of AO sized paper to use. You could get some really controlled lines that way. Started out as just a way to clean the rollers. then took on a life of its own.

How beautiful it is to listen to your narration! Your elaboration was like Story Telling. It reduced our tension and awkwardness towards our confidence if we can follow you in respect of trying our hand in making of a portrait.
