Amen to the pastel addiction! I have a bowl of vine tomatoes that I took a photo of with the intention of painting and no clear plan. I’ve been waiting for that sign to say “now” and just came across this video. Oh the wonder! Thank you as always. I finally figured out why I’m so riveted by your marks (besides the beauty) and it’s that you never “color”. Your marks are intentional pastel marks and they are worth studying by themselves. Blessings!

Hi Alain I don't garden myself, but here in Illinois, I'm getting gorgeous tomatoes from all my gardening friends. Your painting turned out beautifully with that blueish background. I really enjoyed this demo😊 Thank you so much for sharing your passion. I look forward to the workshop. It's perfect timing. Hullo Alain! It is so good to see you creating marks, it is as if your creating precious jeweled pieces of pigment into a painting! I know working smaller gives us more opportunities to work and complete a picture. Practice is what makes us better, right? Right! I do wonder how to get this precious Tomato on a larger scale. I have done larger watercolors for a kitchen wall and enlarging a single piece of fruit or vegetable for a statement piece or decorative object in a kitchen. Can this be done in pastel? I do wonder how you would approach this question? Thank you for once again providing an excellent example of how to create a perfect little jewel of Pastel Art. I am still in awe of your landscapes and I feel closer to getting into a class, who know this may be my year! I look forward to your workshop and I am signed up! See you and all of the interested artist's wanting to be better pastel painters!!
@AlainPicard Жыл бұрын
thanks for all your kind words Michael, I appreciate it. Scaling up a tomato would change the mark making style once it goes big. it would become more of a realism/detail look due to the size. It would be hard to maintain a bold loose look without using wide brushes. Maybe best for an acrylic or oil interpretation. The pastel enlarged would likely appear hyperrealistic. If you like that style, then it would be great!
@mjpete27 Жыл бұрын
@@AlainPicard I have had the most success going large with watercolors or acrylic's. I am still curious as to how large you believe it the limit for soft pastels? Thanks for your continuing inspirational videos.

Hello Alain. I recently learned about you on an episode of Art School Live. I've never used soft pastels before and you've inspired me to try. I just love the high chroma. Your painting is so fun! Quick question about this video, please. When painting the background, you call the colors neutral. Do you mean a mid value?
@AlainPicard4 ай бұрын
thanks, glad you are enjoying it! Neutral typically means less chroma, in this case the background is a mid value, but neutral would refer to the chroma. Intense color is high chroma, the background is cool while the tomato is warm and high chroma, even though red is also a mid value. Hope that helps!

Hi Alain. Can you tell me the product # of the deep red/burgundy color you used for the shadow area of the tomato. I live in Canada and am trying to see if I can order singular pastels. These are not sold in Canada and the duty and fees are crazy to have them delivered her.
@AlainPicard Жыл бұрын
Hey, I don't have the product number, as my pastels are laid out in a palette for ease of use. I was using Terry Ludwig deep crimson, I would look at their R200 or R180 as options, the Intense Darks II set has them or buy a single stick terryludwig.com/products/30-intense-darks-ii
