One issue you may encounter when using an HVLP gun to spray latex: the airflow may tend to dry the latex, particularly at the margins of the spray pattern, so the paint at the edges of the pattern goes on more dry than the paint in the middle. In extreme cases, it may even be grainy, dusty, or rough at the edges. Using an airless sprayer for latex eliminates this problem because it is not using air to blast the paint. Of course, with enamel, which dries much more slowly, it won't matter. But with latex, I've gotten best results with an airless.
@AmplifyDIY

This is an excellent point - and is likely exactly the issue I was having before I treated the paint. More than anything, I suspect that the flotrol stuff helped the paint avoid drying out quite so badly at the edges of the spray pattern so it reduced this problem. I probably would have had the same or better results by just thinning the paint with water. If I had to do it all over again, I'd either use an airless sprayer or a non-latex paint. Thanks!

I want to make it clear that I'm not partnering with anyone for this video. I mention Home Depot and Behr as well as the other brands that I do simply because it's what I used. Everything you see me use in this video I purchased with my own money, at the regular price. My opinions are my own, and I've been as honest as I can be sharing my experiences.

Did you have any issues and or considerations with any overspray?
@AmplifyDIY
@AmplifyDIY 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Ben - I was not concerned about it for this specific project for a few reasons: I was spraying the exact same color as my house, so any overspray that landed on my house would not be an issue. My closest neighbor's house is far enough away that I did not need to worry about overspray actually sticking to anything on their house. I painted on a relatively calm day (there was a slight breeze, but nothing very strong), and kept a careful eye on where overspray was going when I was on the side of the shed that faced my neighbor's house. Your specific circumstances may vary, of course. Good luck!

@AmplifyDIY
@AmplifyDIY 2 жыл бұрын
Heya HomelessOnline - I don't remember which compressor I used for this job, but it was probably a 20 gallon one... but something smaller would probably work ok as well... .it's less about the size of the compressor tank and more about the CFM the compressor can produce. Check what your gun needs, and make sure your compressor can supply it. Good luck!

When spraying you want to spray the whole side without stopping sobyou don't get the lines. So you spray from one side to the other without stopping.

Hello. Nice Job. Looks Great. What Size Tip on Gun did you end up using, and what was the air pressure on compressor you used to spray. Thanks Bud.
@AmplifyDIY
@AmplifyDIY 4 жыл бұрын
Hi James - I used the largest diameter tip that came with my gun. I believe it was labeled 0.7. As for air pressure, I set the compressor to 100 psi, but the regulator on the gun itself I turned down to something like 40 psi, as I recall. You'll just need to play with things a bit to get the pattern, coverage, and consistency you are looking for. Good luck!

I love your videos! Just getting ready to purchase and install LP siding for a two-story garage. One question, any reason not to paint the lap siding on the ground and then install?
@AmplifyDIY
@AmplifyDIY 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Ed - you certainly can paint it on the ground prior to install... but you'll use more paint that way. Let me explain: installing will mar up the surface a fair bit and you'll want to come back and do a bunch of touch-up painting. Also, if you paint prior to install, you'll paint the entire surface of each piece. However, when you paint after it's already installed, you'll not be applying paint to the portion of each piece that is overlapped by the one above it. I know the overlap is not much, but over the entire surface of a 2 story garage, that little strip at the top of each piece will add up. It's completely up to you though - paint is relatively inexpensive, and if you don't mind doing some touch-up after install, then painting on the ground may be the way to go for you. Good luck!

What type/size compressor are you running to with the hvlp gun??

Hi Oc - I have this compressor: www.homedepot.com/p/Husky-30-Gal-175-PSI-High-Performance-Quiet-Portable-Electric-Air-Compressor-C303H/206532808 - but you don't really NEED one that large to run an HVLP. My particular gun needs 4 CFM at 90 psi, so any compressor which can deliver what your gun needs will work fine. Great question!

I was a bit surprised that Sherwin Williams had to order the paint color. I use Sherwin Williams latex on my house in three colors and they've always just pulled out a gallon of base white and added the tint right there via the computer-controlled machine.
@AmplifyDIY
@AmplifyDIY 4 жыл бұрын
It was because of the specific grade of paint I wanted to use. I was trying to match the same grade the builder used, but they didn’t have that or any of their higher grades in stock. They only had the lower grades. So, it was less an issue of the color, and more that they didn’t stock the right base.
@LeeBv9983
@LeeBv9983 4 жыл бұрын
@@AmplifyDIY Yikes! I thought I was buying the best grade. Next time I need paint I need to investigate the paint grades more.
@AmplifyDIY
@AmplifyDIY 4 жыл бұрын
@@LeeBv9983 It was really odd all around: They not only have a bunch of different grades of paint, but within each grade they have several different bases that need to be used based on the color and sheen you have selected. Darker final colors require a different base than lighter final colors, etc. They had some of the bases for the grade I wanted, just not the right ones for the colors I selected... and they claimed none of the other stores in my area stocked it, and they could not tell me when it would be in for sure. So I walked into the local big box with paint chips and just asked for their top grade exterior paint in those colors. 20 minutes later I walked out with my paint. Sherwin Williams (at least in my area) *really* seems to only want to do business with contractors and builders. Homeowners are definitely treated like second class customers there.

wrong sprayer. gravity fed is fine for little bits of furniture but for a cabin or a shed your gonna have to swing that thing around a bit to get under the sofits and angled edges... you need a little hvlp sprayer with a pressurised vessel so you can tunr it upside down and it will still work.

I heard that it’s better to remove the masking tape while the paint is still wet to avoid tearing the paint off.
@AmplifyDIY
@AmplifyDIY 5 жыл бұрын
If you know you will only be doing 1 coat, yes, that's better. In my case I did 2 coats of the masked off areas, so unless I wanted to mask twice, that tape was staying put until the paint was fully dry. Just be careful and patient when removing the masking, and it'll pull off cleanly.

I was careful to paint on a calm day, there is a tall fence between my house and the neighbor, and there is plenty of space between the fence and their house, so I was not worried about paint blowing over onto their property. Having said that, you make a good point. Don't use this technique on a windy day or if the thing you are painting is close to a neighbor's property.
