What I love most about your tutorials (other than that you’re a puppy lover) is that you give a thorough description of your colors as you use them and your process. With your help, and the assistance of others on KZbin, I have learned how to draw and paint at 65 years young.

I just found your channel and I love your work. I too love painting with pastels on Hahnemuhle velour paper. It’s always been my favorite substrate. There’s definitely a learning curve involved with velour compared to sanded papers & I use them also but nothing beats velour for me. Thanks for sharing your art here.

Hi Emma. I am currently working on a sunset painting in pastel, so this was very helpful. Just wondering if you are using a velour paper for this painting? Also, I love that peachy tone pastel you have. I am assuming it is Unisom? I need a color like that in my collection. Right now, I've been blending yellows and oranges to try to get that effect without much success. So funny -- I did hear those screams in the back ground and it made me think that our neighbors had their grandkids over screaming in the pool. lol I'm glad you clarified that. lol
@EmmaColbertArt
@EmmaColbertArt 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Renee, yes I'm working on velour here. It's my favourite paper for this type of painting. The peachy tones are from Unison and they have a beautiful range of yellows right through to reds with all the lighter tints etc. It's also great to blend different colours to get the effect giving it a multilayered look more like real life.

You have many video's I have yet to watch but have you ever tried to use alcohol for under-painting? This might reduce the dust your experiencing, I really like this picture, You do amazing Animals but I hope you can do more scenic's maybe an ocean picture or three? Please paint what you love and we will love your videos too!

I have used mixed media and paint along with pastel but not for ages. I just love getting straight in with the pastels and actually apart from when I'm covering a huge area in one go, I don't create a lot of dust. Some nice effects with underpainting though for sure! I have painted quite a few ocean scenes, just haven't made that many videos on those yet. Have a look in some of the other speed painting videos there are a few on landscapes with water. Also have a look on my blog as it has some of my landscapes from before I started making videos. www.emmacolbertart.com/category/landscape/

Hi Emma. I am a beginner in pastels and I'm enjoying your tutorial. I love impressionistic style of painting and I'm having such a difficult time doing prickly pear cactus in bloom -- trying to get them to look loose and lovely. I love that look but I am not achieving it. lol I was wondering if you have any tutorials not on velour paper? I am currently using MiTientes Touch paper but I really prefer Uart 400. But I have to use up my MiTientes and then I'll purchase more U400. Thanks for your help, Renee

Yes a lot of my tutorials are on Pastelmat. But also a lot of the techniques I teach really work on any paper. It's more about colour and composition etc, things which can be applied anywhere. I have a tutorial on KZbin here about UART 400 so you can see how it works for me.

I always had a hard time making clouds from pastels.. Your video really helped. But I seem to be using wrong sheets.. Which paper do you use?
@EmmaColbertArt
@EmmaColbertArt 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Parnika, As long as you use a surface that is suitable for pastel it's fine. Each paper gives a different effect so I always suggest to order a sheet or two of some different types to see which you like. I use a velour pastel paper made by Hahnemühle. It's soft texture is good for taking several layers of pastel like this. Pastelmat is also good, especially for beginning with pastel. Good luck!

@EmmaColbertArt

I work pretty upright which seems to stop most pastel falling on the piece. Some artists create a little channel from tinfoil or something similar at the bottom of the easel to catch what falls. I just don't get a lot falling from the piece as I rub in all my layers.

@EmmaColbertArt

If cared for properly pastel paintings last as long as any oil painting. There are pastel paintings in museums over 500 years old. With the quality of materials these days and proper framing to preserve a pastel should last generations.

I have a question, what's the difference between soft pastel faber castell and rembrandt? I ask because when I use faber castell, i feel it very soft, don't paint like your videos
@EmmaColbertArt
@EmmaColbertArt 6 жыл бұрын
Hi María, the Faber Castell sticks I use are the square edged pastels and they are a lot harder than the big Unison soft pastels I use. Rembrandt are also quite soft but I find the texture of Unison perfect for the velour paper I use. I also use some Faber Castell Pitt pencils for the very fine detail. So it's good to have a mixture from hard to soft.

Yep, I know! But you get what you pay for. I spent years buying one or two at a time every time I visited the art shop and gradually they aided my progress as an artist. They last ages too unless you're working on a rough surface. :-)
