This is the greatest video EVER. Thank you, so much for putting this up. I followed the instructions and finished the pool in about four hours. It looks great! Tim made it look so easy that I was certain I could do this. I was right. I used the acid straight (not diluted with water) and it took about 2.5 gallons to finish my pool. My pool is 32 x 16 with a 10 foot deep end. The acid I used was 34.45%, although I ran out and the second I bought was 14.50%. It still worked fine.

Hello Douglas. You are absolutely correct, you should not use the muriatic acid around children, pets, or other people not wearing a respirator device. At 3:52 and then again at 4:22, Tim goes over all the safety requirements for using acid to clean pool walls. Thanks for watching :o)

Tri Sodium Phosphate... a common cleaner used by a lot of janitorial and pool refinishing folks. Many other videos on KZbin recommend using it in order to lower the PH of the acid before applying the epoxy. But if it's not really needed thats good - saves a lot of time.

well, that depends on a lot of variables. how dirty it is, what is the surface material, how old it is, and how strong you make the acid mixture. everytime you acid wash a pool, it does eat into the surface somewhat, so there are limits. but back in NY, when we had a pool service company, we did have customers that had us do it like every other year, and they got good results. thanks for watching. dan

Hello, I really appreciate the time and effort in your videos. I'm undergoing a pool renovation. My pool is a combination of fiberglass and concrete(gunite?); where I have fiberglass walls and steps with a concrete bottom. Acid washing the concrete is straightforward. However, is it recommended to acid wash the fiberglass or sand it? I'm thinking that acid washing will be much quicker and just as effective. Thanks for your time.

Great video man. I went and got my acid wash, my pool was pretty bad but I'm not getting great results without putting acid on at least 3 times on the same section or pressure washing slowly after the wash. My muriotic acid says 20* is that weak stuff? It isn't yellow like what you are using but it's clear. I put about 3L of water to a 4L jug of acid. It is working but muuuuch slower than what you showed. Just wondering if the 20 is a weak acid. Thanks!

Hi Matt! Every customer's pool is slightly different, so that's why you are seeing various issue addressed in all the videos. With the pool in this video, almost all the existing paint was gone, due to the age of the pool. So it did not require a sanding or sandblaster prior to painting. Thanks for watching!

Hi Dan. I have an indoor pool, and I was just wondering can I use the Ramuc Surface Clean & Prep Solution instead of the muriatic acid? My pool was painted with epoxy paint in the fall of 2008, so it needs a good clean, a couple pits filled, and a paint job. It's not a big pool, 20 L x 15 W, and holds about 9600 gallons of water. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks. :)

We recently followed your videos to paint our pool. As we finished we noticed that other online videos recommended cleaning with a phosphate after the acid wash. We did not do tis because your 4 steps didn't mention that. What sort of ramifications do we face by not doing that? Will the paint not cure properly? Any thoughts?

I am going to be acid washing my pool this winter. It is a plaster pool, and on the bottom of the pool, there are many bumps,which I believe are calcium deposits. With the water in the pool, I have used a pumice stone to get rid of a couple, but there are many of them. Will acid washing get rid of these as well? Thanks for the videos. Very informative.

Pool draining: my pool has a hydrostatic valve. I live by a river and pool bottom is at the high tide level. There is a well head with the ability to hook a pump I hooked a pool pump, primed it and it was able to drain a small amount of water (mostly what I put in to prime it). There was only a slight amount of cloudy water. I'm thinking there isn't much water under the pool. The pool pump will lose prime and become ineffective. What is your recommendation? Pump recommendation?

I did a acid wash with everything you have shown me in this video... but for some reason mine didn't turn yellow or really foam or anything... it was really hard looking to see where the acid wash was on the pool wall. Was I supposed to mix it with anything? I went to home depot and the only muriatic acid they had came in a 2 gallon pack in the swimming pool section (it mentioned it was designed to lower water pH but I'm assuming ingredients are the same).

Well done ..... May I suggest to any residential or novice worker who is attempting an acid wash should use a buffered acid product first few times ... Like Acid Magic, (Magic Acid? I'm dyslexic lol ) or another brand is Aquasafe Acid. These products do not produce as much acid fumes, smell , and this product will not burn intact skin (ie. no cuts in the skin). You still use all the safety gear since this is still 97% hydrochloric acid but a patented buffer is added to make it easier to work with. A very slight reduction in strength.... Another old trick to reduce on smelly fumes is to put a few drops of palmolive dish soap (just a little at a time until you get the right blend) This does not mean you do not use safety wear. Another good video, you definitely need to state a lot disclaimers now-a-days in our industry....if you are going to these professional only, service videos. Unfortunately, I have the lawyer bills to prove it.

What did you do about the hydrostatic valve?
@PoolandspaTv
@PoolandspaTv 3 жыл бұрын
So this pool was in Las Vegas and they don't need hydrostatic valves. No sub-surface ground water. If you have a pool that has that valve, we would recommend contacting a local pool guy to come look at it before you attempt to drain the pool. You don't want to get into a situation where you are draining the pool and the sub-surface water causes the pool to pop up or raise out of the ground. Better safe than sorry. Hope this helps, and thanks for watching!

Yes, you can acid wash pebble tech, that is part of how they originally exposed the aggregate when it was installed. Be careful and don't overdo it. I've used 1:5 solution of mur. acid to water. If you leave it on too long or use too strong a solution, the aggregate will begin to come out of the plaster base.

Can you acid wash a epoxy painted pool gone green
@PoolandspaTv
@PoolandspaTv 2 жыл бұрын
Yes you can, but you should dilute the acid. However if the only reason you are doing it is because the pool turned green, you can clean it off (the walls) with either a pressure washer, or just use diluted chlorine shock with a brush. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching!

Hi Dan, can i paint a concrete pool directly after an acid wash? Or does it need to be sandblasted for the paint to stick? Thanks.
@PoolandspaTv
@PoolandspaTv 10 жыл бұрын
In most cases you can paint it after an acid wash. It usually only needs to be sandblasted if the surface is in very bad shape, or the old paint is still peeling or chipping off after the acid washing. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching. Dan

There are several points in this vid that are questionable. First..DO clean the entire pool. That includes s the bowl. DON'T leave debris in the bottom of the pool. The first part of the pool to acid wash should be the deepest part of the bowl. Wash it then dilute the acid with water such that you have 6 inches or so of water. This will ensure the bottom of the pool is properly washed and that run off from the sides does not eat away at the bottom. Make sure the sprayer you buy is ALL plastic. Muriatic acid will tear up all metals including stainless steel so DON'T wash the bezels of your pool lights with acid. Take them down and protect the light's and niches from acid during the washing. Make sure you can pump the water and acid that collects from this process into a place it is safe to do so. The acid will eat up concrete, rust metals and kill plants.

What happened to using rubber boots? And neutralizing the acid before you dispose of it???
@PoolandspaTv

Hello Cesar. You can wear rubber boots if you want to. The acid is fairly diluted and if you are careful with it, you can wear sneakers instead. And yes, people do need to dispose of the acid properly. Thanks for watching!

Maybe I don't understand some benefit of using this, but to me it seems like I'd rather use a pressure washer to wash the pool, it may take a bit longer but is much safer and possibly cheaper if to consider that one would need to buy the sprayer, mask and other tools plus the acid. Also you probably took off your mask too soon, you said yourself there is a lot of acid by the drain, yet you were breathing it.

Depending on the condition of the pool wall surface, you could use a pressure washer. But often pressure washers will be too powerful and could hurt the pool surface. You would have to test it on your pool to make sure it's OK to use it on your pool. Also, if you still have grease or algae on your pool's walls after you pressure wash them, you may have to brush the pool down with bleach to get it really clean. If you do not prep the walls properly, your new paint may prematurely peal off. That's why most people use the acid wash method instead. Hope this helps!

So why muratic acid? Why not just water scrub? Why not acetic acid?
@PoolandspaTv
@PoolandspaTv 5 жыл бұрын
That's what most pool guys use to clean cement pools. Works the best and cuts all grease residue very well. There are a few non-muriatic acid based cleaners on the market today which are a bit safer to use. Check with your local pool store for which products are recommended in your specific area. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching!

A better way is to use a watering can instead of a hudson sprayer. The sprayer will spray acid... everywhere. That'll damage pretty much any type of coping in the world. In addition, it's important to wash down the entire pool before applying the acid. You can't have an even burn if you don't have an even start Also you still had copper sulfate stains in the pool- The acid concentration needs to be stronger than what you used. A watering can really shines in this department Pumping acid to landscape is not only irresponsible, it's dangerous and illegal. The proper place to dispose of acid is in a sewer cleanout after it has been neutralized to the correct pH, or to a holding tank so it can be disposed of properly if you use a septic system Keeping the light installed during the acid wash is usually a mistake, because algae LOVES to grow in the light can, and acid has a tendency to "Sit" in the can and slowly drain out, leaving a hard etch below the light. The light removes with one screw at the top, and is held in by a small niche at the bottom and a brass screw at the top. I could keep going, but I think I've proved my point. Don't acid wash your own pools unless you know what you're doing. Draining your pool alone could destroy the plaster shell (delamination, structure cracking), and acid washing it can also cause serious damage. Leave it to professionals, if not you might end up having to pay for demolition, replaster, AND an acid wash, rather than just an acid wash

Hello Lemon - Thanks for your comments about this video. Many Pool Guys use different methods for acid washing a pool, and many work well. There are many opinions about the best way to do each step, and for this video they wrote the script in a way that generally explains the overall process. Concerning the pumping out of the acid residual, we absolutely agree with what you said. In this particular job, the pool was located on a desert mountain near Las Vegas, and the area the water was pumped into was deemed safe. Thank you very much for your additional information and tips - and thank you for watching :o)

Dude! You are irresponsible and negligent to pressurize muriatic acid and teach others to do so. Even with safety equipment-it's a VERY BAD IDEA to pressurize acid. FOLKS.... DO NOT DO THIS....use safety equipment and use a plastic watering can and pour down the sides.
@PoolandspaTv

+James Mazewski - Thanks for sending us a comment. The sprayer they used in the video is just an inexpensive Home Depot lawn/insecticide type sprayer. They are very safe and are used for all sorts of purposes. Any liquid in them is not pressurized to the extent where it could "blow-up" or cause any damage. You can certainly use your method with a plastic watering can, but that can sometimes cause streaks. Using the sprayer coats the walls more evenly, and allows for more control while spraying. Hope this helps and thanks for watching!

Michelle - Yes you can put it in the sprayer. No, you probably should throw out the sprayer after use (they are cheap). The acid won't eat the plastic. You should get the kind of mask they show in the video for best safety. Hope this helps! Thanks for watching !
