Rob invented watering down paints

You painted 2 models to a good table top standard in the time I did the finishing touches on 1 model to my regular standard, and despite that across a table I don't think the difference would be readily apparent to most players. That said, a small amount of extra effort on these, especially on the metals, would lift them a lot further than where they are now.

How much would you say do you thin down the contrast paint? 50:50?

You can zenithal highlight with dry brushing, you're still creating the appearance of a light source from above. It just looks smoother with an airbrush.
