Today I'm painting some IBC totes for an addition to my rainwater harvesting wildlife waterer set up. In the video I'll show how I remove the IBC tote from the cage, prep it for paint, paint it, etc,. This is important to help reduce algae growth as well as protecting the plastic from UV sun damage.
NOTE: An alternative and perhaps a slightly more long term durable option would be the wrap the tote in a durable plastic. It works great and many have had great success with that route! But I prefer paint for its ease and the clean, finished look of the tote after its been painted.
And here are the links to the previous videos on my rainwater harvesting wildlife waterer set up.

Thank you! No, the waterers around my property are not for hunting. They are for the benefit of the animals that come to use them. As well as my dog and a couple neighbors dogs who use them as well.... free to all😂 But I will also say that I do hunt though.... but totally respect that you might not agree. We utilize the meat and participate in what is sometimes referred to as ‘fair chase’. I don’t hunt over water or feed or anything like that. Most often I use a traditional bow. And follow all game management laws. In the great majority of states, animals like deer, elk and other ungulates are managed to allow for growing numbers and if you compare the heard populations to 25 and 50 years ago nearly every state had much higher populations now. But I understand you may not agree and I respect your opinion just the same. Thanks for watching and I hope to have the upgrade video to my wildlife waterer set up by this fall or winter. Hoping to see some cool footage of some of our animals that are unique to Arizona, like coatimundi or javelina🙏🙂

Had to laugh at the look your dog was giving you as you "drank". When I was much younger, I helped the Texas Bighorn Society install drinkers in the Davis Mountains. That’s awesome to hear! I have been wanting get involved with one of the guzzler projects for the AZ big horn sheep society. As for the the upgrade to my current system with these IBC totes I think I’m going to adjust the water level as you mentioned... or perhaps get a larger bowl to allow for a little more usage. This one will only accommodate one deer to drink at a time and percolates the refill very slowly🤔. Of course if I think too much in it I might end up painting a 4th IBC tote and extending the roof catchment too.... and I told my wife it would be a simple ‘quick’ project😂
@demesrvl6761
@demesrvl6761 3 жыл бұрын
@@homesteadonomics LOL, there are no "small" projects! Larger bowls would probably mean more IBCs, lol.. I know you live in the desert, but does your rainwater catchment system also harvest humidity/dew? Or does that evaporate before it gets thick enough to collect?

Alright Joe, you made hoisting that tote up and down out of those metal supports look a little too easy. So either I need to start doing more push-ups and chin-ups, or if you happen to be driving through northeast New Mexico anytime in the near future, stop by and lend some of your muscle. LOL! I'd love to do something like this for my parents up on the New Mexico-Colorado border for all of their deer and turkey, but I know the moment they see a mountain lion drinking out of their water, they'll never leave the house again. Great stuff as always.

Love the animal footage and it's very nice that you expanding their water supply. It must be hard to think of more projects that benefit you and your land without putting a financial burden on your household. One possible idea for another video, I have little experience in home construction such as the topics you do, but I would love to do it some time. Anyway, could you do a video of what sort of screws you use for joining metal to wood, as in the workshop battons, and also perhaps the use of the pocket hole device and setting it up etc. Might be a bit boring to some of the more skilled viewers but I for one would find it extremely interesting.

They actually will hold up really long without paint. But it depends on when it was made. I’ve heard some have UV inhibitors in the plastic and some don’t. But I haven’t figured out a way to determine that through the stamping yet🤔. I’ve got one that has that cracking sound on the top when you push but the rest don’t have any cracking sound and they are all about the same age. Some I’m guessing that one is one of the non UV plastics

Thanks for sharing another video. Very helpful. Trying to work on the development of my first wildlife, rainwater, water station. A few questions. 1) Does painting prevent moss from growing inside? I like how you left the electrical tape to see water level. I am assuming that a small, unpainted strip will not allow moss or algae to grow? I am hoping so as I would really like to use the small strip to track water level. 2) Roofing panel for water collection. I am finding several different thickness's of roofing panels. Do you find that that if you use the thinner gauges, (29 gauge is what Home Depot sells) that if it is secured with enough screws, that it holds properly with heavier winds? 3) Do you you use galvanized roofing? 4) Lastly, when possible, I would love to see how you link the two IBC Totes together (in a future video). I have been trying to figure out how to combine 2 totes together (to get greater water capacity) so that the total gallons available increases for the animals. Thanks again for making such informative videos. Looking forward to seeing more videos regarding your wildlife watering station.

Instead of painting it, you can use a black plastic pallet bag to cover it (the pallet cover bags are rated for one year in direct sunlight and cost about $3 each. You buy them in a roll of 50 from commercial supply stores like Uline. Much easier to wrap than to paint and the plastic container lasts much longer. The more the plastic container is in direct sunlight, the more microscopic plastic is mixed into the contained water. With that many bags, you can slip one on from the bottom and tape to the tote, and then slip one on from the top and tape down.. that way when water comes in from the top it won't fill up the bottom bag.

I would also like to thank you for your video on your raised bed gardens. We have built 4, 4X8 and will be building 4 more shortly. Thank you for your great informative videos.

Haha... yeah I knew I’d get folks asking... until they saw the end. But rest assured I want to get some newer footage once I get some new cameras. I’m hoping to get some of our more unusual wildlife like coatimundi or javelina... or even a mountain lion that our neighbors have see recently😬😂

Dry to the touch and cure are different animals. Dries to touch in 1 hr. to handle 48 hrs, fully cured 3-4 weeks. Its all on the can, no one reads it. And just from a different perspective, this job would be perfect for a quart can, tray and foam roller. Less cost, no overspray and a thicker mil on the surface. And they do make bonding primers that are great for plastic so any topcoat color is available. Nice project.

Believe it or not, I am going to paint my totes soon. They had algae growing in them, so I have to make them impervious to sunlight. Thanks for sharing!
@homesteadonomics
@homesteadonomics 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Tim, yes the paint should help with the algae for sure. The darker the paint the better light blocking... of course the more heat it could collect too. This khaki doesn’t completely block out the light but does help. But perhaps a darker tan or brown, etc might work as well.

@@homesteadonomics I just used 7 cans of spray paint which cost $6 a can and it took well over an hour. There must be paint you can roll on! It would be so much faster and better to get a thick coat. I only did one tote and have 2 more to do. So Im either going to cover them or find a good paint I can apply with a roller. Im seeing a lot of light through the paint so I need better light blocking. Black plastic sheeting will look ugly next to my house but it might be a better solution.

Great idea! Looks like it is getting some use. I have 40 acres in northern AZ and I think I am going to do something similar.. My property is surrounded by an operational cattle ranch so I am sure I will capture a lot of bovine traffic on my cams. lol Just curious, do you have a decent supplier for the IBC totes? I can't seem to find a good one.

A black plastic wrap will keep more light out than tan paint like this but for my wildlife waterer I prefer that it doesn’t get as hot. Thanks for checking it out😀👍

Rustoleum makes a cheap plastic spray gun that clips on the top of the can and works similar to a hplv spray gun. Makes the job so much easier/comfortable. js And raising your little girl right!

Another fun video. The villain in most of my projects is time as well. I am retired these days and you would think time can just flow at its own schedule... nope, I get more impatient. Well, there is always touch-up. Another father/daughter experience. She looks very much at home on that. I’ve seen a lot of your wildlife water clips but what visitor, other than ‘man’ was the most surprising? Thanks for sharing!

Thanks Thom! Sorry for the slow reply too. I was camping with Marley over in that rocky place we did a video on about a year ago... lot of fun there. And about unique animals coming in for water. Just the bobcat that I have on camera. But our neighbors saw a mountain lion recently😳. As for other animals that I’d like to get on camera would be coatimundi or javelina.... both unique desert animals👍😀

Something that might help if you are doing a lot. The make devices the will go on a paint can that will give you fan when you paint, not as nice as a real paint gun, but better than a regular rattle bottle nozzle

Hello. Im Barbara. .. They say colors help too. Sunlight passes through the plastic which is not healthy if they are in the sun all day but painting blue purifies the water much better and is healthy. Interesting right? I got 4 IBC totes and thinking about painting too but blue will get attentions far away lol .. Thanks for sharing information.

ironically....i just did the same thing two weeks ago. Same paint in fact...lol. 5 cans for a 330 gallon tote for 1 coat. Another 4 cans for second coat got it done. I modeled my deer watering station after your previous video actually, and got it out there last weekend. I dont have water collection though. How long does 300 gallons last for you? I used the same water tray style that you used....and im in West texas....so the evaporation levels should be similar. How often should I exped to refill them? My tote is 330 gallons.

From my plastic lawn chairs painting experience, the spray paint chips off soon. Better to get out the orbital sander and rough them up. Then after the spray paint cures in the hot sun, coat them with a sealer or clear coat. Could even use a primer after sanding should you be so inclined.

New subscriber, GREAT content! ANY hesitation in painting a water barrel due to leaching IF the water were to be consumed by humans? Looking into preparing a small catchment system for natural disaster/emergency backup use but doubt my wife wants a blue barrel setting in the back yard, but your cammo/tan paint job might make for an easier sell. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
