Sam is king. Hes not cocky about his art, he’s skilled. He’s not giving mindless trashtalk to beginner painters, he’s gently telling them what they should do. He’s one of the artists that doesn’t just show off it and just genuinely has the intention of helping people get better. It’s very wholesome and these are the artists I hope to be like someday.

I study creative writing at uni and my tutor constantly says that your setting is a character. Where your scene takes place is just as important as the sentient characters within this scene. I think this translates perfectly into any form of drawing or painting too

Sam, that was the best advice ever. Paint your background before or at the same time as you're painting your character. This has a lot to do with the way you perceive the colors you use in your art too. Since the background probably takes up most of the space of the canvas and it is all the way around your character, its colors will have the greatest influence on the colors you will use for your character and it will help it you achieve more harmonious colors in your painting and an overall more believable lighting and atmosphere. And there's no shame in using a reference.

Another tip he did not point out but is extremely useful (and he’s also doing): DON’T ZOOM IN! It saves on a lot of the guesswork and helps you maintain objectivity of your reference and canvas real-estate. Also it saves you a ton of time because smaller canvas = less hand movement.

I found this video helpful. I always did the background last, but what you said about doing that makes sense. As soon as you said that when you do that, it looks like the subject is sitting in front of a green screen, I was like, yep. I knew what you were talking about. A suggestion though, you refer to the reference image you are using, talking about things like how you have the basic large shapes of the background blocked in, etc. But we can't see the reference image. It would be helpful if you could also show the reference image you are working from in the video. That way we can see exactly what you are talking about.
