If you're planning to follow this tutorial, please watch the whole video before picking up your paintbrush!
After my Mephiston video last week, I had a few requests for Castellan Crowe as my next Space Marine Hero character and...well it's done now. This was harder than usual for me, I couldn't figure out my process straight away so I showed you what I did and changed along the way instead of acting like I knew what I was doing the whole time! I'm still not 100% sure about a Grey Knights scheme after this, so please let me know your thoughts, and if there's anything you'd recommend me trying?

Nothing wrong with a video showing some ideas on how to work with a process or how good things can look even when you’re not personally 100% happy. Great to see! I love the character models. I would be interested to see your take on the Leagues of Votann, either one of the terminator equivalent heavy armoured guys or a pioneer as I love your leather technique!… or you know my usual request, more Deathwatch please. 😂

@@MediocreHobbies what a great day! Just finished watching your LOTR elves vid and now I’ve got a whole playlist of Votann that I can binge. Haha, well if it’s not Votann then I guess I’ll have to go back to requesting more Deathwatch because I still don’t feel like I’ve seen your models up close. I currently have a plan to do some Cadian shock troopers mixed with Talaryn desert heads, I want to give them a multicam camo or something like that. Do you have any videos showing how to paint camo schemes?

The whole step by step guide to painting models isn't why I watch. It's techniques and recipes to details rather than the whole that appeals to me. So mistakes or trial be error are not in any way a bad thing in my opinion. In fact, I tend to like those videos better, and a couple of other painters I also watch regularly have them in their videos. I think you learn much more from them.

I'd do this: surfacer in gloss black. Steel base, bright aluminium volumetric highlights and then bright chrome large highlights. Do the blue tint with a colour shift ink: blue to turqoise. Very thinned out with medium, not water. Water will break the colours when used to thin really a lot. Paint the shift areas, but not just everywhere. Use as a flourish/special effect. :)

That grey knights steel reminds me of the old space wolves grey in the sense that it looks nothing like the box art, as I remember the space wolves were always more shadow grey with a highlight of space wolves grey and the grey knights steel seems like it's only really used for the shading with it being mostly a regular runefang steel colour for the most part. I'd be tempted to try and glaze the shadows with a watered down blue ink, as like you showed here it's probably the best way to get that box art look, also the silver from posca paint pens is ridiculously bright, if you empty a marker into a dropper bottle, it's fantastic for highlighting silver (I know it's not great for doing tuturials as most folk won't bother doing that, but if you ever want to push some highlights just for your own amusement it's really bright), plus if you get the smallest size marker the pc-1mr they're great for dotting on rivets on guns and backpacs etc as a little time saver :)

Your videos are never a waste of time. 😉 Never lose this attitude. We all struggle and it's helpful to see other people struggle and how they overcome. Yeah I would have done things different. But you might not have had that opportunity because you were dealing with what you had... That red over the metallic for me was glorious. You might need a bit more depth/contrast but I wanna play with that. 😉 You might want to go black then come up with the lighter metallics to get a bit more but I loved that red over the metallic. It's only because I love you that I didn't quit the video when you covered it up. 🤣🤣🤣

I’ve had a few Grey Knights models built and undercoated in Leadbelcher for, maybe, a year or more, not knowing how to progress from this stage. This could be the push I’ve been waiting for. I’d love to see you tackle a Grey Knight Marine, or Terminator to see if your recipe holds up and that blue glaze works on larger areas. Whatever, it is certainly food for thought. Maybe my next project should be a Grey Knight Combat Patrol. I really appreciate you posting this video, warts and all to show that heroes don’t always wear capes 😂

17:04 yeah that's definitely better than mine. So glad I'm not the only one who still uses Guilliman Blue for Grey Knights. I've heard Talasar Blue heavily thinned gives a similar effect to Guilliman Blue. I've definitely learnt a few things from this video, and I think I'll try them out on some of my unpainted Grey Knights. I was excited when they brought out Grey Knights Steel, but looking back on it, it's not that great. You get far better results with traditional silvers and blue shades. If you wanted to do a grimdark Grey Knights scheme, their original scheme was a dark, almost black metal with accents of gold and red. Keep up the good work.

Subbed. TLDR: Grey Knights are nowhere near as easy as they seem. I should have researched more in the beginning. I prime in black, do a single watered-down coat of Leadbelcher, then a 1-to-1 blend of nuln oil and lahmian medium, then I hit everything but the shadows in a thin coat of Iron Hands Steel. Next, I paint all the recesses and the center of any large flat areas with Grey Knights Steel. It gives a blue sheen as you move the model. Then I do a 1-to-1 Drakenhof Nightshade / Lahmian Medium in all the recesses, and finally, a 1-to-1-to-1 mix of water / Lahmian Medium / Tyran Blue to the hands, lining of the shoulders, top area recesses of the helmet. Then, and only then, is the armor basics done. From there, I use Retributor Armor on the gold, ProAcryl Bronze on a few of the larger skulls, Khorne Red on the red parts, Corax White on the white parts. Ushabti Bone on the paper. Shoulders with writing are done completely in gold, then undiluted wash to cover underneath the letters in black. Should be silver base, pool of black, with raised gold lettering. Usually takes me 3-4 coats to pull it off. Eyes are AP Electric Blue, dot of Corax White, then glaze of Voidshield Blue. I actually shouldn't call it a glaze. It's more like a droplet of paint-stained water that you put in the eyes and let it slowly evaporate. In 20mins, you get nearly perfect glowing blue eyes. For Power Swords, I sit down for a good hour... ugh. AP Deep Blue, AP Electric Blue, AP Voidshield Blue, all in a gradient - glazing along, waiting for it to dry, cleaning it up, doing it again, then edge highlighting with Blue Horror. Bolters are ProAcryl Coal Black, Leadbelcher mag, screws, barrel, and sights.Bolter rounds themselves are ProAcryl Bronze. It's a nightmare. If it weren't for Tabletop Ready and channels like yours, I'd be DOOMED.
