Do you need to wet the white paper to get things to be sort of cohesive? Not sure if that makes sense… I mean all the white paper that is being left white.

I would wet the background and avoid painting wetting the white flower otherwise the background paint will run into the white flower. To get things looking more harmonious you could use the same colours on the background in the flower itself 😊

Hi Karen, Thanks for your amazing tutorials I am really enjoying learning to paint during the lockdown. Hoping you can advise me though. I bought framing tape after seeing you using it & having previously used making tape myself. After doing my latest painting I am finding it impossible to remove the tape. What am I doing wrong?

Thank you Virginia for your comment and question. I am not quite sure why it's not coming off...could be your paper. If you use a blow dryer on the tape, the heat may make it easier to take it off? Hope this helps. Happy painting :)

Such a lovely painting! I have a question. I'm still learning watercolor,and I feel as if I'm not getting any better. I'm using student grade paper and paints . I practice a lot. Do you think maybe I should get better grade paper and paints? Thank you

Thank you Elizabeth for your comment and question. Sorry you feel you are not getting better at watercolour, it can be very frustrating. I think the paper can make a tremendous difference! I would treat yourself to some artist watercolour paper. Even a small pad to start with...Arches, Winsor & Newton, Fabriano Artistico and Saunders Waterford are the best. Make sure you buy at least 300gms and a Not surface. Hope this was helpful :)

Elizabeth, I think better quality paper is more important than paints at this point! Make sure you are buying cold press. Not sure where you are located but in the US you want at least 140 lb. Remember you can always cut larger pieces down. You will find that quality paper will stay wet longer which allows you to blend your pigments more effectively. Upgrade paints as you can afford to. Always buy the best materials you can afford. Higher pigmented paints will help but I'd spring for the paper first. Good luck and happy painting!
