The finished result looks great Charlie, you can’t see those cracks at all and the house looks very smart. Carrier bags are a good way of keeping the paint off the paint tray, it takes two to cover the tray (one for the tray and one inverted for the roller area), and if you leave the paint to dry on them you can then reverse and turn inside out for the next painting - works surprisingly well. I like the tip with the hosepipe to clean the roller, plus you give your bushes a protective coat of paint during the cleanup as well 😁

Thanks Geoffrey. Great tip that I'll have to try. So everyone's recommending the Dandy Roller and brush cleaner. I have heard about this but never got round to buying. Slightly kicking myself now though!
@MrWLJ7111 ай бұрын
@@CharlieDIYteHi Charlie, I have used the dandy cleaner.... TOP TIP - get some 100mm pvc pipe and a couple of sealable end stops (one for each length). Cut the pipe into a couple of 500-600mm lengths (just longer than your 18" roller). Fill one with water and leave the other dry. Spin your roller/brush in the water filled length... then spin dry off in the 'dry length' of pipe and this avoids you getting soaked by the spin off! If you only want to do one length for the dry spin off, you can of course just do that. But this method keeps the mess to a minimum! Hope it helps!

I’ve been doing the roller spinning thing for a while but in a deep bucket to catch most of the spray. If you can’t be bothered to keep emptying it turn it into a flower pot and have it above a drain area or soak away but I do it this way so I can pour it into a soak away. Great video, large rollers are great!

Thank you so much. I followed every bit of advice, used every recommended product and it came out amazing. I made one change. I hired a light scaffold system , designed for painting two stories. That way I was able to repair every crack , even small ones. Power washing was simple. So here is my theory. I don't think you can properly roller paint an upstairs with a extension , from the ground. If you think of it , you are 20 feet away from the point of contact. Pressing at the end of the extension, but at the top , where the roller is. You are just barely forcing paint on the wall. But with the scaffold, I was able to force the paint into every nook and cranny, every tiny little hole. Thanks again. Saved me a fortune and I have the best painted house on the street.

Great video as always. You mentioned the option of spraying your house, As a decorator myself I personally wouldn't spray outside simply due to the fact that you don't need much wind to carry the over spray potentially onto other houses or cars, I've known this happen before. People do spray outside and I'm sure it's a case of having experience and confidence. I've got a couple of small sprayers one being a q tech p 019 I think but I've honestly not used it in years. I honestly much prefer a brush and roller. Spraying is good but for me it needs to be the right job. Having said that I know other decorators who spray almost ever job.

Hi Charlie we painted a large rendered wall similar to yours, (25 year old render though!) which was previously painted white, no sign of moss of fungi or any of that, we painted it with sandtex masonry paint with microseal technology, and it's turned yellowish within 2 days.. we went back and painted it again with DULUX WEATHERSHIELD exterior masonry paint, it did the same thing almost immediately. so we coated the wall in SBR bond which formed a nice thick shiny layer over the old stuff, painted again with another brand and it's gone YELLOW as a banana, any help?
@MrWLJ7111 ай бұрын
The one issue you may not have considered is Algae! Just because the moss or funghi is not visible, it doesn't mean it isn't there. I had it recommended to me to clean with an anti-algae spray (you can dilute liquid chlorine for the same effect but PLEASE - Use a Respirator!!!) then wash down with the jet wash after. ALSO - You may need to prime in your case? Hope it helps
@Mike-qo4kp9 ай бұрын
Have you used any type of algaecide on your walls in the past? Oftentimes products marketed to either kill algae or fungus rot termites etc contain copper. If you are using water based paints it's very possible the copper is leeching to the surface which will turn white paint yellow. it will migrate to the surface no matter what you cover it with. You can have your yellow paint tested for copper, take a bit of jt and smash it up with some distilled water and have that sample tested at your local swimming pool store. If there is copper present you are going to have to either learn to enjoy yellow walls or remove the exterior coatings down to bare render and repaint. You can remove old paint quickly with an angle grinder and cupped wire wheel attachment.

Hi Charlie - Apologies, I did watch your video but I missed that bit about using the roller afterwards, like you say defeats the object. Not something Wagner say you have to do. Well come the New Year I propose to get a Wagner Control 150M High Airless Sprayer 230V and the first thing I will use it for is the 20 odd fencing panels I have. Will let you know how I got on if you want? Years ago and I do mean a long time ago I purchased a pack of brush and roller cleaning tubes at some large DIY show in London. Different sizes and they go into your hand drill, after you have got the excess paint off and you simply spin them in water until they are totally clean, you might have to change the water a couple of times. When clean you simply spin until they are dry. They work, I still have them and they are great. My dear old dad was a painter and decorator all his life and he thought they were amazing. Not seen them for sale since. Regards Chris

To give a possibly unpopular view, I just sold on my Graco Ultra after having to replace the pump at an eye-watering £200 in just over a year from purchase. At over £600 I’m afraid I just don’t believe them to be fit for purpose (and I’m not the only one whose experienced Sue’s, just google reviews for it) and am now playing with a £30 hvlp sprayer, that although it has to have thinned down paint, is easier to clean and IMHO delivers comparable results to the Graco - oh and in a worst case scenario, it can be replaced for £30 - what’s not to like?!

The rod can be cut to a more reasonable length to fit standard 12inch rollers so lets say 35-40cm and all you need now is either 4 x M6 nuts or 2xM6 through hole knobs, these make the clamp to enable the roller to be spun and a drill of course. I also have a couple of M10 nuts epoxied together at the bottom of the tub that the M6 rod can fit into to give more stability, I have two because I added some epoxy into the bottom nut to prevent drilling through the plastic bottom. You can have two tubs one to centrifugally remove the paint, the second to spin the roller in water. I feel a fill in Charlie video on "Roller Cleaning Best Method" coming on lol!

Thanks buddy. I've often thought about doing something like this - ingenious! Can you get the hose in to spin it effectively enough or is the angle you point it at too much?

Moisture has got behind some of my paint and it’s peeled right off around one of the external chimney breasts. How do I avoid that in future ?

Hi Charlie, really love your videos which are always very educations for us DIYers. You mention in this video using polythene tubing to over the down pipes to protect them from the paint. I haven't come across this before so can you provide more details of this and where to buy, etc? Thanks.

Thanks Adam, I really appreciate that. We buy it from trade suppliers to transport curtains in the old day job., but something like this would do the job bit.ly/30vwE5Z

@CharlieDIYte very helpful video thanks as just about to embark on painting my 1940’s tyrolean render. Please could you indicate what length GT Convertible pole you utilised as different lengths available?

Great video! We have a lot of house to paint so wondered how many of the 10L paint tubs you used. Just to gauge an idea of how much it might cost us. Thanks!

Hi Charlie, I’ve been to your store for some items but couldn’t find the drainpipe protector, can you please tell me where I can get this and what to ask for. Thank you George (I’ve also ordered the Emperor paint) 🙏🏼

Very informative video. You mentioned a soakaway you installed near the house walls, could you enlighten me please? I’m getting rain splash on my new render and a soakaway with pebbles on top might be the answer. Kind Regards

As always mate great videos. Really enjoyed the make over of your lovely home , just one small question….. are you going to paint below your rendering black just to finish it off ? I think that would look nice Charlie Catch up soon mate 👍👍👍👍

You mean that plinth at the bottom? No I'm going to strip it off, rake out the mortar and then repoint. I might then wack some of that breathable Creme on it.

I'm just about to order some emperor paint. The company sent colour cards that are actually cards painted with the paint. I ran it under the ta. Water just bounced off!

Just had my property rendered white and then the windows sprayed black and some overspray got through or under the paper, therefore causing me to have to repaint over my 3 week old render! this video has given me some useful tips! I guess these methods would be the same for the silicone based render and the silicone render paint I’ve just purchased from wetherby for £127 🤦🏽♂️
@CharlieDIYte2 жыл бұрын
I've would have thought so. Just make sure the paint you've bought is breathable, otherwise you're defeating the object of having the silicone based render.

Top video like always, but how did the cracks fare after painting? Which filler blended in the best?
@CharlieDIYte Жыл бұрын
Thanks. They look as good today as they did. There is one section where the resin didn't set properly - probably because I didn't squeeze out enough before starting. The stuff is fantastic though. I'd use it again and again. I also like the Toupret for larger repairs.

Recently painted a small Victorian gate house in Little Green masonry paint up here in the northern Scottish Highlands - the weather can be quite extreme here, so I'm monitoring how it performs. It was a pretty expensive option. If it's any good, I will be painting the main house, which is a lot larger at approx 5500sq.ft. of floor area. But I'm interested in buying an airless spray kit due to the size of the building.

One question can I do this paint over my K rend for my external wall ?
@tommytaylor4139 Жыл бұрын
Top man and wicked VT, just need to ask a few things,I'm a bit of a novice, I'm painting over render that's already been painted (a few years ago now) want to freshen up the side of my home, what's the best extension roller/sleeve to use?, Which brand?, I've got sandtex paint for the job, ladders etc, Hamilton/Harris brushes, I'm pretty much good to go, but I don't want to muck it up, my wife is expecting a professional job!!, Any advice would be so welcome, shall I use a paint scuttle or tray?, What pile if sleeve?, How many coats?, Many thanks and take care 👍
@CharlieDIYte Жыл бұрын
It's all in the vid Tommy. Tailor the roller sleeve pile to the roughness of the render. Probably medium pile unless it's Tyrolean or other textured. For the extension poles get yourself to a Dulux or Johnstone's decorator centre and buy what they suggest. You want a roller cage minimum 12 inch. Far superior to the usual sleeves that push on. Don't buy any kit or paint from DIY store like B&Q as the paint is watered down and the kit is rubbish.
@tommytaylor4139 Жыл бұрын
@@CharlieDIYte Thankyou Charlie, I have taken heed of your advice, got all the gear from either Brewers, Toolstation and Screwfix, Sandtex paint, Harris/Purdy/Hamilton kit, I don't know that much, but one thing I definitely know is to avoid B and Q. I agree with your views on that, plus the staff seem clueless aswell, whereas my local Brewers are very approachable to questions and giving tips 👍.
