A method (and not simple) - make a silicone type casting of a an area and then use it to replicate the original area - carefully pressing it onto the still wet repair material. Not easy - and not suitable for all repair materials - but done right - 99.0% 'invisible'. CHEERS from AUSTRALIA.

TOP TIP: I always save old silicon tubes after use. Unscrew the nozzle and push a long rod down the inside of the main tube to force out the internal plunger bung. The silicon will dry after a day or so and is easily removed as one piece with a stick. When the silicon is dry in the nozzle, screw a long screw into the threaded end and pull it out as one solid piece. I then mix cement (or in your case the powdered render) and spoon it into the tube. Tap the nozzle end on the ground every now and then to compact it. Finally push the internal plunger bung back inside the end of the tube. You can now use it to quickly fill deep cracks like repointing between bricks of as in your rendering. I use the same tube over and over again by refilling until the job is done.

As a painter and Decorator and have to defend the toupret fibacryl it's a superb product! Yes I agree it shrinks back and with another application and a less aggressive grove cut you can get a great finish / with some secret decorator 🎩 You need to remember the reason your surfaces crack is that they are moving slightly! If you use a solid set filler guess what a crack will appear at some point some where! Far better off applying a flexible filler and doing a few coats than repeating an issue! It's how I carry out all my work and wouldn't change it but best of luck to you!
@CharlieDIYte

Well it's good to hear someone defend this stuff but I'm really not a fan. A month down the line and that crack looks dreadful. It's completely shrunk into it and will need a repeat application - which isn't really practical for you to do in your day job, after the event. I'm going to grind it out and redo with the Metoset. I hear what you say though about cracks that need flexibility.

Spurred on by your video, I finally got around to fixing a couple of cracks in the rendering on our house. One was near the join between the extension and the house but the extension was built many decades ago so I think the crack is superficial and stable! Anyway, the Metoset did a great job of filling it and making it watertight - and I'm glad I bought a geared gun for it). I did start to press some gravel into the Metoset when I had applied a short section but this was messy and not very effective and I decided just to rough it up a bit with an old putty knife and a wire brush and that made it blend into the surrounding pebbledash. It will need to be painted at some point but that's a whole different job.

Great work, Alan. It's fantastic stuff isn't is. Well done getting a geared gun. Makes all the difference. @CharlieDIYte

I'm leaving them bare. The whole house is swathed in Tyrolean today can't breathe but by leaving the plinths unrendered I'm at least scaling this crucial bit at the bottom some air and also, the damp course such a it is, is bridged if it's rendered.

@@CharlieDIYte Thanks that makes sense. Is there a way to make it look a bit nicer or is leaving them bare as is really the only logical solution? ⭐ Quick tip, if anyone is interested. For VERY thin hairline cracks (upto 2mm) in render/paint... Search for "blunt needle syringe set", and you can inject smooth masonry paint directly into cracks. Overfill with paint, and then stick some polypropylene fibres over the top whilst it's still wet. Once dry, go over with a topcoat of masonry paint. Works a treat if you're not going to the trouble of opening up the cracks and using filler. With this method, you end up with a clean, slightly flexible seal that lasts. No jet washing or blowing out required. Use a mould/algae treatment first if necessary. As a bonus, it's easy to rework the area if there's continuous movement due to other factors.

The Toupret Masonry Filler certainly looks much slower to apply, but with the technique of touching up with the spnge and toothbrush, I think the finish came out the best out of the lot. Maybe go with the tube application and have someone go behind with a Sponge and toothbrush to blend the finish to look like the render? Great job as always 👍

Thanks. Yes I agree. Someone has suggested putting the render into an icing bag which is a great idea. Other option, put it in an old caulk tube although thinking about it, it might be a bit too thick to extrude.

There is extensive cracking on this facade and I wondered why and what age of the building is and if it were perhaps originally constructed with lime mortar. If so, the concrete render will traps moisture in the brickwork and prevents it from ‘breathing’ and may cause damp problems inside. The long term approach, (and it’s a big one!), would be to remove the concrete render and replace it with a non hydraulic lime render (e.g. from Mike Wye, Ty Mawr or others) and then paint with a lime wash or clay based paint such as Earthborn… so it all breathable…(from my architectural experience).
@CharlieDIYte
@CharlieDIYte 3 жыл бұрын
Totally agree Vicki. Most of the cracking has been caused by water ingress at the vulnerable points around the sills and such like. The walls are pretty dry judging by those I've stripped back internally, but the mortar between the bricks is in a pretty bad state, which is I suspect why they rendered it in the first place.

@@CharlieDIYte It's brill that you get it Charlie - as we are seeing the terrible slow-burn damage done to lovely old buildings from repairs using cement render, cement repointing and gypsum plasters internally - all trapping moisture within the walls (like wearing a raincoat while running) and leading damp and decay.

Thanks for pointing that out Sarah. It's something I've been very aware of (given my old career as a lawyer) but I'm not sure it's quite that clear cut and I've had legal advice on this. The rules are a bit more opaque in the US, but over here provided I have complete authorial control over the video with no right of input from them, then I don't think I need to flag it as paid promotion. For belt and braces I go out of my way to mention in the video when I've been gifted stuff. I could err on the side of caution and flag every video as paid placement, but I don't see why I should tar them all with that brush, particularly when one or two of my fellow creators are, shall we say, sailing a lot closer to the wind on this.

I'm a structural engineer and I'm slightly concerned that although there are quite a few cracks that can be repaired by angle grinding along the line and then infilling, there may be some cracks between the ground floor window head and first floor window cill that could be down to wall movement/weakness in masonry behind and I would recommend chopping back a wide band of render to inspect masonry behind and repoint as necessary.
@CharlieDIYte
@CharlieDIYte 3 жыл бұрын
Many thanks for this, John. The masonry is weak, I'm certain of it. I had a wonderful opportunity to repoint internally when I refurbished the bedroom, but I didn't unfortunately. I'll keep an eye on it. Now that I've sorted out all existing cracks, after painting I will at least know we have a continuing and accelerating problem if new cracks form, and then I'll probably need to do as you recommend, which could be the start of stripping off the entire lot.

@@johncranna Honesty and openness is my thing, John. Life's too short, in my view to be otherwise. But in this instance your kind observation struck a chord because I've been wondering for a while now whether some of those cracks could be due to me inadvertently upsetting the equiibrium when I stripped off the (admittedly crumbling) render in our bedroom. You're learning all the time in this game and I should definitely have repointed. At least I can monitor it now. One thing I'm planning is a new square bay that will be built off the ground, rather than the existing hanging bay which itself is exerting an unhelpful load on the old wall via the roof above which is supported off a few triangular brackets. If the worst comes to the worse, I strip it off and redo the whole area, as you say. It will make for an interesting video - every cloud, eh?! 😉

Good review and insight. 👍🏻 You say not to use the Toupret flexible product unless the render is "subject to movement". However, aren't the cracks there in the first instance exactly because they are subject to thermal expansion? I'm no expert, but those cracks did not look to be subsidence related. I have this job to do on a new build extension because the twats I hired didn't put in expansion joints as per the plans. After 4 seasons, the render has conducted its own movement tolerances, allowing water to penetrate inside. I think using anything that sets rock hard will just shift the issue to the next weakest section of render, and I'll be constantly chasing and filling new cracks.
@CharlieDIYte
@CharlieDIYte Ай бұрын
It's a fair point. The only thing I'd say is that the cracks haven't opened up again since I did this and no bare ones have formed so I think you've just got to crack on with the work if you pardon the pun to reduce that water penetration.

Hi Charlie, excellent video. Do you think you could use the Metaset to fill the narrow deep cracks then the exterior filler to give you the required texture. We have fully removed a render like that from a house in France. It also was up the 25mm thick and yes it did cover all sorts of problems in the stone which then took a lot of repairs.
@CharlieDIYte
@CharlieDIYte 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Mat. Yes I think you could certainly do that. The thing is that Metoset is so good you kind of feel you want it at the surface but yes provided you left enough surface area to key to, then a top layer fluffed up with a toothbrush would do a good job. Someone just suggested using an icing bag to pipe that Toupret into the crack and in fact if you kept an old caulk tube and used that too force it into the crack then tooth brushed the surface I think that's probably the best solution. Annoying when you hit upon a better idea when you've posted the video 😉🤦🏻‍♂️

My old farmers cottage has a lime render & had about 10 coats of paint that were flaking badly... using a pressure washer actually gouged the render ... soo..... I used a 125mm diamond face-grinding wheel (it took 3 actually🙄) to GRIND the paint off ! It was a ball-breaking job but the render came up like new... full head-to-toe PPE & windy days were mandatory ... 😆 I also have a flat roofed extension leak and I'm hoping to get some roll-on polyurethane sealer Roger Bisby on Skillbuilder recommended... 😏 This is SO what the internet is for... disseminating useful information & teaching new skills... thank you Charlie... Remarkably similar. I also have to repair Tyrolean, remove plinths, and install channel drains/soakaways on my new (old) property. Do you have videos of your soakaway?
@CharlieDIYte
@CharlieDIYte 2 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately not, although I used a perforated 100mm land drain pipe like this bit.ly/3nThEXe which terminated in a soakaway that I dug in the garden below, and filled with rubble excavated in part from the channel I dug to lay the pipe in, - not the most efficient soakaway but needs must at the time. I don't have a clue how much, if any, water the pipe takes away but having the gravel against the old foundations has got to be hugely beneficial in itself. The gravel was 20mm I think. The previous owner had paved up to the plinths, and over the years the paving had actually sagged so it was sloping into the plinths rather than away from them, diverting water into the foundations rather than away from them!

Have you got any thoughts or advice on external wall insulation, we are about to move into a 1920's semi-detached with damp issues throughout and fear one of the major issues is the external walls
@CharlieDIYte
@CharlieDIYte 2 жыл бұрын
I think if you can afford it, Andy, and it works with the design of the house, and you can get a reputable company to install it, it's a great option. Have you watched this video kzbin.info/www/bejne/inqnk2CmmbShjq8 ? I think you should install a PIV if you can (eg Nuaire) and you might find a lot of the damp problems go away. You should get a couple of hygrometers so you can monitor humidity levels in the house. Insulation is one thing but you still need a strategy as discussed in the video, to manage the humidity that YOU'RE generating - of which there will be A LOT from inside.
@andychappel3500

@@CharlieDIYte Thanks for this Charlie! Absolutely, PIV is near the very top of out list for sure! Will just the single PIV do the trick for most of the house (in time) ? The reason I ask about external insulation is to add much needed insulation on top of ventilating the place! Thanks

It's a good idea. The problem is with that epoxy resin it would have been too pliable when wet and too unresponsive when going off. Plus the mold wouldn't have sat well against the existing edges because they're totally random.

I had a similar rendered wall which had a lot of hairline cracks but was otherwise sound. Did a bit of research and found Murfill Renovation Paint (made by Rust-Oleum) which is designed to fill and bridge minor cracks without the need to grind out and pre fill. Its 400% elastic and comes in a multitude of colours. Not cheat at around £45 for 5 litres but really works and saves a lot of time and mess. There's also a reinforcement fleece and mesh for more extensive cracks which is embedded into first coat of paint while still wet. Only down side with this is it only comes in 1m x 100m rolls and it's £150 a roll.

Been painting our pebble dash with sandtex trade ultra smooth. Dries to form a rubbery finish and found the sprayer will fill some cracks. Definitely easier for for people like me suffering from carpal tunnel and seems like you get a good thick coat compared to a roller which can pull the chippings off. In some cracks i also bedded a few chippings in with filler. And on some bare patches i gunned a few blobs of filler that look like chippings - if you do this low down you need a few coats to make it more convincing but works fine for bits that are higher up. Only the 3rd coat to do in a few areas, glad it's done before it gets too hot. I bought a Wagner 350M, it sprays 40% diluted first coat on fine, but struggles a bit with the 10%. Have to do it a little at a time but keeps you being thorough.

Dear Charlie, I am about to start to sort out the front of my house as I asked a plasterer to repair the cracks and he ground them out and then infilled, but the job looks very messy. Can I ask how you would go about repairing cracks in a render that is smooth rather than pebble-dashed? I am trying to figure out how to fix the problem! I think the plasterer put a type of silicon on top of the cracks after filling them in, which is why they stand out so much... Would you recommend the Metoset for smooth render? Can you sand it down when it has dried? If you could respond to this comment I would be forever grateful! Thank you for this excellent and informative video :-)
@CharlieDIYte
@CharlieDIYte Жыл бұрын
Yes you absolutely can sand down the Metoset and yes I would recommend it for smooth render. You'll see me doing that with the mortar raking tool in the video. The stuff your plasterer used - is it paintable? If it's a silicone type product you won't be able to sand it unfortunately whereas you can with the 2 part epoxy resin fillers.
@katyajohnson3281
@katyajohnson3281 Жыл бұрын
@@CharlieDIYte Dear Charlie, Thank you so much for this rapid response. I think it was a type of paintable silicon, but it did strike me as an odd choice for the job as it has created a skin on top of the cracks which make them stick out all the more - though I must say that the wall has dried out, so from that point of view, he has done a good job. I am getting scaffolding up soon and will attempt to prise off the silicon (any recommendations for how to do this?!) and then add in some metoset in the recessed cracks, which I will then try to sand down with a sanding tool and overpaint. I am also going to try to repaint the front of the house and have watched your video on this with interest, since there is quite a bit of mould on the front of the house that I need to clean off. Would you recommend using bleach to do this or an anti-fungal wash? Which power spray, in your opinion, if I rent one, is best? Many thanks in advance for your help here - I've never done anything like this before so it is new territory for me!

Very clever 👏🏻👏🏻 I love that idea. The only issue is the Metoset would be too sticky to form into the mold, and the mold could only be with width of the crack which would be difficult to apply in practice. Fab idea though that's got me thinking!

I’ve had an almost exact same experience with these products. The fibacryl is crap -both out the tube and out the tub, which is surprising because Toupret is my go to brand for filler and I use all their other products apart from their wood filler as it’s just a bit too porous. I had render cracks to fill on a job in June and used the rawlplug styrene free polyester resin, which worked just as well. What I did though was tool it down first with scraper then gloved fingers for the lip edges, then when it’s cured, I caulked the whole surface of the resin and smoothed it in So it matched the tyrolean. This tyrolean appeared to have been painted many, many times tho as was all soft bumps which was why the caulk method worked so well 👍
