As a painter and Decorator and have to defend the toupret fibacryl it's a superb product! Yes I agree it shrinks back and with another application and a less aggressive grove cut you can get a great finish / with some secret decorator 🎩 You need to remember the reason your surfaces crack is that they are moving slightly! If you use a solid set filler guess what a crack will appear at some point some where! Far better off applying a flexible filler and doing a few coats than repeating an issue! It's how I carry out all my work and wouldn't change it but best of luck to you!
@CharlieDIYte3 жыл бұрын
Well it's good to hear someone defend this stuff but I'm really not a fan. A month down the line and that crack looks dreadful. It's completely shrunk into it and will need a repeat application - which isn't really practical for you to do in your day job, after the event. I'm going to grind it out and redo with the Metoset. I hear what you say though about cracks that need flexibility.

TOP TIP: I always save old silicon tubes after use. Unscrew the nozzle and push a long rod down the inside of the main tube to force out the internal plunger bung. The silicon will dry after a day or so and is easily removed as one piece with a stick. When the silicon is dry in the nozzle, screw a long screw into the threaded end and pull it out as one solid piece. I then mix cement (or in your case the powdered render) and spoon it into the tube. Tap the nozzle end on the ground every now and then to compact it. Finally push the internal plunger bung back inside the end of the tube. You can now use it to quickly fill deep cracks like repointing between bricks of as in your rendering. I use the same tube over and over again by refilling until the job is done.

Been painting our pebble dash with sandtex trade ultra smooth. Dries to form a rubbery finish and found the sprayer will fill some cracks. Definitely easier for for people like me suffering from carpal tunnel and seems like you get a good thick coat compared to a roller which can pull the chippings off. In some cracks i also bedded a few chippings in with filler. And on some bare patches i gunned a few blobs of filler that look like chippings - if you do this low down you need a few coats to make it more convincing but works fine for bits that are higher up. Only the 3rd coat to do in a few areas, glad it's done before it gets too hot. I bought a Wagner 350M, it sprays 40% diluted first coat on fine, but struggles a bit with the 10%. Have to do it a little at a time but keeps you being thorough.

Spurred on by your video, I finally got around to fixing a couple of cracks in the rendering on our house. One was near the join between the extension and the house but the extension was built many decades ago so I think the crack is superficial and stable! Anyway, the Metoset did a great job of filling it and making it watertight - and I'm glad I bought a geared gun for it). I did start to press some gravel into the Metoset when I had applied a short section but this was messy and not very effective and I decided just to rough it up a bit with an old putty knife and a wire brush and that made it blend into the surrounding pebbledash. It will need to be painted at some point but that's a whole different job.
@CharlieDIYte3 жыл бұрын
Great work, Alan. It's fantastic stuff isn't is. Well done getting a geared gun. Makes all the difference. Yes a few people suggested I could make a mould to press into it but you can't really do that, you have to tool it as best you can and then leave to set. I'm my next video I'll show how I ground it with a mortar rake tool on the grinder before painting.

I’ve had an almost exact same experience with these products. The fibacryl is crap -both out the tube and out the tub, which is surprising because Toupret is my go to brand for filler and I use all their other products apart from their wood filler as it’s just a bit too porous. I had render cracks to fill on a job in June and used the rawlplug styrene free polyester resin, which worked just as well. What I did though was tool it down first with scraper then gloved fingers for the lip edges, then when it’s cured, I caulked the whole surface of the resin and smoothed it in So it matched the tyrolean. This tyrolean appeared to have been painted many, many times tho as was all soft bumps which was why the caulk method worked so well 👍

⭐ Quick tip, if anyone is interested. For VERY thin hairline cracks (upto 2mm) in render/paint... Search for "blunt needle syringe set", and you can inject smooth masonry paint directly into cracks. Overfill with paint, and then stick some polypropylene fibres over the top whilst it's still wet. Once dry, go over with a topcoat of masonry paint. Works a treat if you're not going to the trouble of opening up the cracks and using filler. With this method, you end up with a clean, slightly flexible seal that lasts. No jet washing or blowing out required. Use a mould/algae treatment first if necessary. As a bonus, it's easy to rework the area if there's continuous movement due to other factors.

Thankyou for your excellent description on render repair, watched it multiple times and then felt confident enough to tackle my house , The Metoset works great but is horrendously expensive if you have a large job , smells quite lethal when applying ,and goes off really quickly . The Toupret powder ,really impressive stuff ,gives excellent results ,much much cheaper, stays workable long enough to make the correct surface match .Highly recommend it too. I used the wider masonry disc and gave the repair area bit of overlap either side ,stippled the surface with a stiff brush , and threw small bits of gravel at the repair which then stick to the Toupret giving it a match for the surrounding area , hopefully when i paint it wont show too bad and will blend in well.

I live in a 300 year cottage which was painted with Sandtex which I had to remove then the whole house was repointed. Some bits are single skin brick upstairs and the bricks are so bad, render is the only way to make them look good whilst definitely keeping the water out. Luckily my decision to steam off the paint and repoint the rest of the house means those couple of areas round the back which can’t breathe don’t matter. Wish I’d have known about the crack repair of the render. Probably would have saved some money and time on having them redone. Saying that, I will likely be using this in the future when I come across this thanks!
@CharlieDIYte3 жыл бұрын
Sounds like we have a similar situation Jon. I reckon I've got some single skin upstairs on one side of the house. I suspect they rendered because of the general state of the brickwork. All that work was well worth it though given you've now got a house that can breathe 👍🏻

I'm a structural engineer and I'm slightly concerned that although there are quite a few cracks that can be repaired by angle grinding along the line and then infilling, there may be some cracks between the ground floor window head and first floor window cill that could be down to wall movement/weakness in masonry behind and I would recommend chopping back a wide band of render to inspect masonry behind and repoint as necessary.
@CharlieDIYte3 жыл бұрын
Many thanks for this, John. The masonry is weak, I'm certain of it. I had a wonderful opportunity to repoint internally when I refurbished the bedroom, but I didn't unfortunately. I'll keep an eye on it. Now that I've sorted out all existing cracks, after painting I will at least know we have a continuing and accelerating problem if new cracks form, and then I'll probably need to do as you recommend, which could be the start of stripping off the entire lot.
@johncranna3 жыл бұрын
@@CharlieDIYte Thanks for your honest and open answer!! I must admit that sometimes I have surveyed cracks in a house and said 'I have no real idea why the cracks are there but they appear small and low risk. I suggest just repairing them and if they re-appear in 12 months time then we will need to look at it a bit deeper'!!
@CharlieDIYte3 жыл бұрын
@@johncranna Honesty and openness is my thing, John. Life's too short, in my view to be otherwise. But in this instance your kind observation struck a chord because I've been wondering for a while now whether some of those cracks could be due to me inadvertently upsetting the equiibrium when I stripped off the (admittedly crumbling) render in our bedroom. You're learning all the time in this game and I should definitely have repointed. At least I can monitor it now. One thing I'm planning is a new square bay that will be built off the ground, rather than the existing hanging bay which itself is exerting an unhelpful load on the old wall via the roof above which is supported off a few triangular brackets. If the worst comes to the worse, I strip it off and redo the whole area, as you say. It will make for an interesting video - every cloud, eh?! 😉

I'm leaving them bare. The whole house is swathed in Tyrolean today can't breathe but by leaving the plinths unrendered I'm at least scaling this crucial bit at the bottom some air and also, the damp course such a it is, is bridged if it's rendered.

A method (and not simple) - make a silicone type casting of a an area and then use it to replicate the original area - carefully pressing it onto the still wet repair material. Not easy - and not suitable for all repair materials - but done right - 99.0% 'invisible'. CHEERS from AUSTRALIA.

So like a pebble dash silicone cast like a cast of a woman's breasts lol sorry for that example , which leaves you with a mirror of that 1 metre squared patch for example?

I used an old 2" paint brush trimmed down to create the stipple effect to blend in the render.

Thanks for some great tips/product reviews. Had flat render to be repaired. Soon settled on the Metoset to do the deep cracks ( but not flush) and used the Tourette’s on top so it could be sanded. Note - you definitely don’t need a geared applicator for the Metoset,

Thank-you this is so informative and so well explained. You mention that the Tajima gun can be adapted to suit 380mm cartridges. How is this possible? Does it have to be done at the factory or is it something that the purchaser can do?

I recently used the Tourpret mix filler and can confirm it gives great results, but definitely takes more time than a gun-based system. I'll give the Metalux product a try in my next project. It looks very much like the Epoxyset/Permafix products I've used before for fixings
@CharlieDIYte3 жыл бұрын
You might try putting that Toupret in an old empty caulk tube - or you can also buy empty ones. Not sure if it would extrude with the consistency, but someone suggested an icing bag which got me thinking this might be worth a go.
@wings99253 жыл бұрын
@@CharlieDIYte true and a decent idea Charlie. Would certainly give more working time than the two-part products. I struggle to full an icing bag without getting caked in it though 🤣

Thanks so much Carl. You're absolutely right, I haven't done nearly enough videos recently. A combination of things, not least my son had another brain op to try and cure a life long epilepsy condition, which has impaired his vision slightly and not worked, so it's been a tricky couple of months. But I've also hit upon a video style that is very time consuming, what with the scripting and editing. Time to man up though and crank the machine back into action. 😉 Plenty of vids in the pipeline though. Massive thanks for watching them mate 👊

Hi Charlie. I’ve got a fair sized hole in some plasterboard . Have been told to 70% will with expanding foam. Then skim over with fibacryl leaving just below the surface and then skim over with my easifil before priming / painting. Does this sound ok? Thanks …
@CharlieDIYte Жыл бұрын
Hi, I wouldn't bother with Fibacryl. I'd use the expanding foam which will firm up the plasterboard nicely behind. Leave about 10mm at the surface or cut the foam away when set and then skim with the Easi-Fill building up coats if necessary.

Hey Charlie another good video thanks, Toupre seems like a decent brand I have used their Interior Filler in the past and found it decent quality. Just a thought (outside of the box). I think you could have used a Food Piping Bag and Nozzle with the Toupre Filler to make the job less tedious and ensure maximum filler insertion into the cracks.....
@CharlieDIYte3 жыл бұрын
Thanks mate. Yes someone else has suggested that. Very good idea and in fact you could take it a step further by piping it out of an old empty caulk tube. Only thing is I wonder whether it would be supple enough to extrude, but worth a try with a wet mix.
@ruinunes82513 жыл бұрын
@@CharlieDIYte Also Charlie, as you have Ryobi tools, you could invest in a 18v Ryobi caulking gun, they are cheap and do the job well. Save your hands. Don't ask how I know this.

Thanks v.m. Charlie, from Hong Kong. Both highly informative & entertaining! A suggestion: it would be great to have the details for the surface prep of the large crack (Final repair) at the back of the cottage (PVA et al.). Cheers!
@CharlieDIYte9 ай бұрын
Thanks! For that I used a standard PVA although SBR bond would be better for outdoor use and then a bag of Tyrolean render I had bought for a larger repair that I didn't get round to doing.
@DP80s3 жыл бұрын
Remarkably similar. I also have to repair Tyrolean, remove plinths, and install channel drains/soakaways on my new (old) property. Do you have videos of your soakaway?
@CharlieDIYte3 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately not, although I used a perforated 100mm land drain pipe like this bit.ly/3nThEXe which terminated in a soakaway that I dug in the garden below, and filled with rubble excavated in part from the channel I dug to lay the pipe in, - not the most efficient soakaway but needs must at the time. I don't have a clue how much, if any, water the pipe takes away but having the gravel against the old foundations has got to be hugely beneficial in itself. The gravel was 20mm I think. The previous owner had paved up to the plinths, and over the years the paving had actually sagged so it was sloping into the plinths rather than away from them, diverting water into the foundations rather than away from them!
@DP80s3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your thorough reply. I'm glad you said about beneficial gravel as I'm considering just using gravel as a very short term measure

That powder filler looks very handy to have on hand. Fyi they may not have paid you with money but it's still considered a payment for promotion as they have given or loaned the product for free & should be labelled as such. Don't want you getting caught falling foul of the ASA rules
@CharlieDIYte3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for pointing that out Sarah. It's something I've been very aware of (given my old career as a lawyer) but I'm not sure it's quite that clear cut and I've had legal advice on this. The rules are a bit more opaque in the US, but over here provided I have complete authorial control over the video with no right of input from them, then I don't think I need to flag it as paid promotion. For belt and braces I go out of my way to mention in the video when I've been gifted stuff. I could err on the side of caution and flag every video as paid placement, but I don't see why I should tar them all with that brush, particularly when one or two of my fellow creators are, shall we say, sailing a lot closer to the wind on this.

8:16 "I took to wearing nitrile gloves" Or what was left of 'em 🙄😂 I have a similar problem with cracks so I appreciated this video.. Also... My old farmers cottage has a lime render & had about 10 coats of paint that were flaking badly... using a pressure washer actually gouged the render ... soo..... I used a 125mm diamond face-grinding wheel (it took 3 actually🙄) to GRIND the paint off ! It was a ball-breaking job but the render came up like new... full head-to-toe PPE & windy days were mandatory ... 😆 I also have a flat roofed extension leak and I'm hoping to get some roll-on polyurethane sealer Roger Bisby on Skillbuilder recommended... 😏 This is SO what the internet is for... disseminating useful information & teaching new skills... thank you Charlie... From the Emerald Isle 😎👍☘🍺

Hi Peter, thanks for that. Wow, what a labour of love that was, but worth it for the end result! In these situations there's no simple solution. You just have to find something that works and persevere with it. Good luck with the roof repair 👍
