How to Paint: Fallout Super Mutants.

The Post Apocalyptic Wastelands of America are the perfect place to find some Super Mutants and in this tutorial we'll show you how to paint one of these radiated creatures. These miniatures are from Fallout Wasteland Warfare from Modiphius Entertainment and are an absolute joy to paint. Glazing is probably one of the best thing Contrast paints are amazing for. Since they’re not too transparent, and stain heavily, they make fantastic filters.

I was thinking of trying it on orcs.I have a small AoS Ironjawz army, and I think I've gone through three different recipes for skin already, not counting the shaman, who I deliberately made albino. The only thing that i would consider Duncan, is what type of brush you can use. People should know that these wargaming brand brushes are not a requirement and that you can use regular artisan brushes. Like for the regiment brush i would use a size 2 brush (and more often than not a synthetic one too, which you can get for 2 quid or less) But when it comes to details i usually switch to a size 0 brush with natural bristles. My point is: perhaps just make people aware that they do not need these wargaming brand brushes to get good results (matter of fact, most competetive painters i know, don't use them at all) - and that most of the big wargaming stores are carrying artisan brushes these days too.

Light brown base + shade with a dark brown wash (agrax or whatever you prefer) + highlight with same color as base then an even brighter tone on highest spots, make sure to use warm browns (more yellow).

Love to get your feedback on why you’ll sometimes use a wet pallet and other times will not. Is there a real reason, or just force of habit?

I know for me, it depends on the size of the project. If I'm doing a solo miniature that doesn't really have too much mixing going on, I just use my regular ol' plastic washable palette because I don't want to waste a sheet of wet palette paper. If I was doing an entire warband of some kind, I'd use the wet palette as the paint will keep much better over the longer periods of time it'll be sitting on the palette.

There's one thing that has bugged me for a while now: how do you keep your Citadel paints from drying up in the top of the bottle? Can't really close some of them anymore.

You might also want to trying painting with a wet palette. In a Tupperware container put a wet paper towel and put a piece of parchment paper over that. Your paint will dry a lot slower, giving you more time to work with it.

In addition to what others wrote, make sure you're actually fully closing the pot. Citadel paints have this thing where it feels like the lid is closed when the front snaps but the back isn't all the way in yet and paint can still sip into the crevice (it won't actually pour out but might collect and cake on the rim).

I have a question Duncan. Why did you wait to do the skin color until after you did all the detail work on everything else?
