I greatly appreciate this video. Well I appreciate many other teachers and tutorials- I do sometimes feel that it is a little bit disingenuous to teach a watercolour video that starts with a very detailed pencil drawing as many teachers do. I appreciated the way that you actually just started painting as I feel like more watercolour teachers should just teach water colouring because to fill in a pencil drawing to me seems very similar to just filling in a colouring book. Whereas your tutorial is actually true watercolor! Thanks!

April, thank you so much for your comment! It means a lot because I do not like coloring book watercolor, but it seems a lot of people consider it to be the height of artistic achievement. Certain control is of course necessary, but I much prefer to give the painting a certain freedom to develop. Btw, have you seen my Loose Watercolor playlist? There are a lot more videos in this style, I'd be curious to know your opinion on them. Thanks again!

Hey Ksenia, beautiful painting indeed. Are you able to help me with the kind of water colour brush you are using? What bristles does it have? Many thanks!
@KseniaAnnis2 жыл бұрын
Tarun, these are Asian art brushes that are sometimes called Chinese painting brushes or calligraphy brushes. The ones I'm using have natural goat hair. I can't recommend a brand because I bought them from my Chinese painting teacher, but you can find some online. Just make sure and check the description, some of them shed quite a bit and some are better quality.

Beautiful I will be trying this. What kind of paper? Do you treat it before beginning
@KseniaAnnis3 жыл бұрын
Thank you, Jacquelyn! This is 140 lb / 300 gsm cold press watercolor paper. I think the brand I used was Canson XL. I didn't do anything with it before I started painting, just taped the border and pined the corners. Tag @tummyrubbstudio if you post on social media, I would love to see your painting!

i am new to your channel how do you paint without any guidlines? like how do you paint without the lineart? i am a beginner in watercolor thankyou so much!!~~
@KseniaAnnis2 жыл бұрын
Welcome to the channel! I usually do have a pencil drawing, just a very light one. During the painting process I also draw with my brush. That helps the painting to develop more organically and intuitively. I show freehand painting exercises in a couple of recent lives, if you’d like to check them out. :)

So, the bloom is wet-on-wet technique?
@KseniaAnnis3 жыл бұрын
Yes, for the most part. I started on dry paper with a yellow wash, but after that all the colors went into that wet paint.

Beautiful! What brand of paints do you use?
@KseniaAnnis2 жыл бұрын
Karen, I use mostly Daniel Smith with some Winsor & Newton, Sennelier and Holbein colors. If you scroll through the posts in the Community tab, the very first post is my palette with all the colors identified.

Thank you so much, Virginia! I have some on-demand classes that you can take - tummyrubb.com/on-demand-classes and I'm working on a new one for beginner watercolorists. If you have Skillshare membership, I'm on there too. :) Did you watch the other two loose watercolor videos I have here? Thank you. This is beautiful and I love your technique. Can’t wait to try. Did you stretch your paper?
@KseniaAnnis4 жыл бұрын
Hi Gilbert! Thank you so much for watching and your nice comment! I don't stretch the paper. I've put sticky masking tape all around it and then I used push pins to hold it in place better. I paint on a piece of foam core board, so pins are easy to insert. I found that the tape only doesn't hold the paper when I start wetting it. Also after I finished and dried the painting, I turn it over on a clean surface, spray the back with water very lightly and put it under weight, it stretches the paper even if it warped during painting.

I love your brushwork and style! Can you please tell me the brush you are using?
@KseniaAnnis3 жыл бұрын
Thank you, Donna! These are Chinese goat hair brushes. I can't tell you the brand unfortunately, I bought them from my Chinese brush painting teacher, but I'm sure you can find something similar on Amazon or on orientalartsupply.com/. They are also sometimes called calligraphy brushes.

Peggy, if you click on the cog wheel on the bottom, you can adjust the playback speed. Also if you look at newer tutorials, they are slower. I have a whole playlist on watercolor flowers - kzbin.info/aero/PL1dHnU6CKLW0WxaxQAJZjIsY3usnjvuvk Hope this helps!
