In this short video I'll be painting up Gandalf the Grey from the plastic Fellowship of the Ring box. It's a great miniature - doesn't look quite as much like Gandalf as the older metal model, but it's still definitely Gandalf.

OMG!!! I forgot about their Deathball Ogres!!! I already have some painted up as "bodyguards" for a character I invented using a seriously obscure mini from my bits box, that fitted as a merchant type character for my growing D&D collection :-) They are so intimidating to look at, let alone convert even slightly (Something I learned converting the old GW Morg 'n Thorg Bloodbowl Ogre into a Chaos Ogre WAY back in the 1990's, and people saw it, and asked me to do the same for their own minis of that character :-D), but just too gorgeous in a brutal way NOT to have a go at for one project or another, not just for what they were meant for :-> I am a HUGE "collector" of minis from so many ranges that I forget where they come from, but Heresy Mnis are among my favourite manufacturers, and I always buy multiples of any of their minis that catches my eye, for different paint schemes or conversions, so my collection looks amazing, even if I do humbly admit it myself (The same can no doubt be said of your collection, too, judging by all the beautiful minis you paint and show here :-D ).

I've just had BOTH Grimdalf (The Dwarf version of Gandalf) minis from Hasselfree Minis arrive this week, and then this video arrives :-) Honestly, it's like all my birthdays have come at once :-D I love how you paint the vestments on this mini, and will DEFINITELY follow your tutorial for doing the robes on the regular Grimdalf, but I'll paint the "Dynamic Grimdalf (And his assistant) to fit in with my growing collection of allies for my Lazlo Van Halfling, (From Heresy Minis) Vampire Slayer and the Company of Oddfellows army I've been working on for a couple of years now :-) People who LOVE minis should check out Hasselfree, especially if you like Deadpool/Star Wars and other ranges of minis, as they have a wonderful collection, and look great for silly little side projects for when you get tired of painting the same thing over and over. I use some of their minis as part of my crew of the Bellum Aeturnum for my Kill Team Rogue Trader force, along with many other producers' minis (I lost track of what came from where in my collections a LONG time ago :->). I love painting Gandalf style minis, as I'm more a fan of fantasy than sci-fi figures, so this is perfect timing finding this video :-D Once again, your grey vestments are eye-popping, beautifully done, and so easy to follow :-) Keep it up, please, as I'm learning more every time I see your "robes" videos :-D

Cheers Paul, very much appreciated. :) I’m a big fan of Heresy Minis, I have a load of them for RPGs, and I love his Deathball Ogres! So dynamic and brutal looking! :)

Please pay attention to Tolkien's own descriptions: for instance, Gandalf had a grey beard until he came back from the fight with the Balrog, after which his beard was white - as were his garments except for the outer cloak. All the fellowship had grey cloaks from the lady of lorien etc

Hey Christopher, thanks for watching. If only I had the time to read Tolkien’s work for each miniature. In the case of the beard, I did it lighter and more yellowy as I didn’t want it to blend in with the robes. It’s easier to do loads of grey shades on a bust or similar, not so much on a smaller miniature. I base the colours mainly from the films as I love them a lot. :) As with everything though, take what’s useful from a video and discard the rest. :)

And beware of excessive 'highlighting' - it's a bad habit - can make a miniature look like a stripey zebra. Highlighting is natural if the contours are there, imposing it may be counterproductive. Subtlety is best ie. restraint or a gradual approach.

Thankfully I don’t do excessive highlighting. I found some of the fellowship minis have flatter areas where there would be creases/shades/highlights so added a few in that give it that little more ‘3d’ look. :)
