Is glare on water is a difficult thing to paint? In this video you will see the easy idea behind painting this light effect on water. First, you have to understand that glare is not a bright light. It's a bright spot in a dark area, so it's not that difficult to paint glare on water. Just paint the dark area in a cool dark color. Then add the bright area. Use white and yellow colors and mix them up to get the bright colors. This vide shows an example of this process.

Thank you, Malcolm. The principle you shared with us is so useful! I think it would work well for the sky as well - can produce dramatic contrast between strong sunlight and dark clouds. I will try it for sure 🙂

Hello there Malcolm. I've been trying to develop my more impressionistic style of painting with oils on canvas with varying degrees of success but what was holding me back I think was the worry of wasting expensive oil paints and canvases so at the weekend I went out and bought a load of good quality paper and some fairly inexpensive acrylics with a view to just being able to practice without the worry of messing up expensive materials. I've just finished my first attempt, for the first go it was fine , I still need to let go a bit more . I have only used oils up until now and I must say I was not really prepared for how quickly acrylics dry but seeing as I want to try to stop over blending and mixing colours and to paint more speedily this could be an advantage . I'm going to have another go tomorrow 😃

Very good. This is exactly how to study painting. Learn with good student paints, panels or paper. This provides freedom to create.

An awesome demonstration Malcolm. The glare effect you obtained with it is brilliant. It actually looked quite tricky though, to get it to read correctly. Particularly, as you say if the attempt was in the hands of a beginner. Just a question though, you mentioned that one could try it early in the morning at the beach. Does the bright sunlight (in your experience) which may reflect off the painting surface in those conditions, make it harder to read the values correctly?

Yes it can be very difficult if you are blinded by the glare. You can try to position youself at an angle that reduces the glare. It is trial and error. Pre-mixing a few base colors in two or three values may help so that you are not misled too much.
