Really enjoyed this lesson! I think I forgot to blink! I paint too tight and incorporate too much detail in most of my paintings. I keep wondering what’s the point of painting a perfect copy of a scene or picture. Might as well just have the photo. I’m hoping to get to the point of painting scenery with colors, contrast, and feelings. Thank you for teaching me how to do that.

Prior to watching your videos/demonstrations Malcolm, I was putting too much white in my shadows. I had a similar problem another subscriber of yours (said he had been having), whilst painting shadows in concrete/asphalt. It ended up looking too much like water. Your teaching methods I find, are much easier to understand than other art teachers, I have followed in the past. I very much enjoyed your interpretation of this scene. Thanks for sharing it.

Even when I think I have done thin layers underneath, I never seem to get such easy clean notes above it. Your oil paints always look strangely easy flowing but at the same time stiff, not running into each other. I'm using watermixable oils (i've experimented with different amounts of medium), would you say real oils tend to have consistency that is easier to work with out of the box?
@MalcolmDewey2 жыл бұрын
I do not use mediums with my oils 8ncluding water mix oils. First try brands that have buttery oils straight from the tube eg. Maimeri or Rembrandt. Plus bristle brushes. If you do need to soften the paint then a tiny amount of linseed oil. Use a dropper. That should solve the problem.

Hi Malcom. I knew all of your 8 tips for greater depth, as I teach them myself. However you presented them in a very clear way with your demonstrations. Great advice. This demo of painting a relatively ordinary subject is one of your best/most helpful. I love how you block in, take it to the next stage & then take your near (but not) finished ptg through what is sometime called the ugly stage to a more refined finish - & the ongoing discussion of what are you painting & why, is truly excellent.

I always thought that it was very important to keep nature’s colors as realistic as possible. Your painting is beautiful yet the value of the grass is way lighter compared to the picture. A bit confused which way to go…

As long as the value structure remains in place you can use any colors you want.
