Hi Natasha. That is beautiful work! Let me begin by acknowledging that you are a far more talented artist than I am, and that I am truly impressed with this painting. Without detracting from that though, I would like to suggest a few things (from the perspective of someone who paints guitars relatively frequently, although without the level of artistry that you display). First, it is ill-advised to paint strait over a glossy surface. Sanding first with high-grit paper gives your primer something to bite into in order to adhere properly. Second, there is a specific technique for applying varnish evenly for a nice gloss that you might benefit from looking into (although your method may have worked to your satisfaction, so feel free to ignore that). And third, if you would like a beautiful gloss finish, polishing is typically an important step (again, if that's not what you were going for, then I apologize for wasting you time with that).

Brad Angove Natasha Get your self some Scotch Brite pads at Home Depot of any Hardware Store to scuff up the paint on the guitar, Tape up all fittings on Guitar or use Liquid Mask which will peel off after painting then spray your white primer with a spray can much more smooth and dries in a few minutes then you can spray your second coat on it,,,,Hope this helps you! I have been doing Custom Painting almost 50 years

Really should remove all hardware, tape the set-neck up, sand or hot air gun the old finish off, fine sand and then apply primer, then paint/wet sand/2nd coat/ wet sand ect, apply your awesome painting skills and artistic design, clear lacquer/ very fine sand/ clear lacquer/ very fine sand, etc.

I haven't worked with something like that, so I don't think I can advice. However perhaps using particular polish like paint could work. Something that would stick right away and not need a varnish. So almost like nail polish type of paint. hmm!
@pplo6 жыл бұрын
+ Flora Moura, br aqui tbm, mas vou responder em inglês em respeito ao canal ok? I'd say you shouldn't apply new finish to a finished guitar. Although you may do it, the finish may not last as long as if it were done properly. To do it properly (with all respect to Natasha, but aligned to the industry standards) you should first remove all the hardware and finish, by sanding it - it is a hard task. Some find easier to scrape off the finish with a metal scraper, or even a knife. Or use hot air gun (be aware if the guitar is made of more than one piece, this method can attack the glue), or even a paint remover. Here in Brazil we have a "Pintoff" product, that will help you removing the original finish. Again, watch out for glued parts. Be aware that your guitar may have about 1mm thick (or more) painting / primer. Then, after the chosen method, fill any hole or scratch to the wood with wood paste, or wood powder (sand some scrap piece of wood) mixed with wood glue and fill the gaps. The wood paste may shrink as it dries, so you may want to do it a couple of times. Than give all the body a good sanding with a lower grit sandpaper (50, or 80) to create a surface where the primer can bond properly. Clean the guitar very well, blowing air to remove dust, wipe it with a rag and get it as clean as you can. Some people uses some some kind of spirit (as thinner) which will evaporate quickly, but use very little. Then the body is ready to receive a primer - if you have a airbrush go for it, or a spray can. Go as evenly as you can. Do 2 or 3 passes (waiting it for dry properly), give it a quick sanding, with a 120 grit sandpaper, to help paint to adhere. Than you'r ready to paint it as you wish. Make sure your paint has UV protection, so it won't fade as time passes. Look for a PU finish - this is a nasty part, because this products have bad fumes you want to avoid. Some people finish the paint job with cianoacrylate (super glue). It turns great, but it is expensive. But you don't need a airbrush, just some craziness lol . After that give it a fine sanding with very high grit (go from 220 to 1200 ) sandpaper. if you wan't a high gloss finish, use some polish compound (car wax will make it) and use some elbow grease. You're done People will charge you something like 180 usd (algo como uns 500 reais) to do this job. now you know why it is expensive. not only uses many tools and products, but is time consuming. You can find some auto painting store that could finish you paint job, so you will not deal with toxic products. ORRRR... just buy some Poska pens and spray cans, go crazy on the original painting and then use some varnish to protect your art.

Hi Natasha ! I love your painting --- very beautiful. I would like to add some tips to help you out too. After applying your primer with a brush, sand it smooth with sand paper and a block, then wipe it with a rag or take it outside and blow it off -- this will give you a smooth surface to paint your base coat on. Also, before you start, it is a good idea to take the plastic covers off and put masking tape over other parts that you don't want paint on -- such as the neck that joins to the body. I usually take this part off and screw a stick in the neck cavity. Remember, if you start with a smooth surface, it will be a lot smoother when you get all your coats of paint on. If you start with a bumpy surface, the more paint you put on will make the bumps bigger at the end. I wish I was there to give your beautiful artwork a perfect mirror shine. I wish I could hand paint like you.

I refinish guitars for fun and I too 1st tho't of a few "you really should have's". BUT: The Zinsser primer used here is designed to and extremely good at sticking to gloss surfaces. I won't switch to it but I know that SHE'S RIGHT! Her follow up painting is very appealing in design. And as for clear coat/polishing? All you wind up with there is a surface that is extremely susceptible to highly visible scratches even with "normal" plectrum contact. I'm thinking that the low gloss surface and the "busy" design on the subject guitar are more likely to disguise normal pick scratches than the traditional mirror shine I have been striving to achieve. I can't draw spit but I'm willing to try the Zinsser primer and her kind of paint with no clearcoat one time. This artist has a good idea.

Ok. Nothing to say about the art. It's just beautiful. However I wonder: Wouldn't the paint start to fall in the areas where the hand touch the guitar? I mean, most of the time the paint start to "discolor" around the mics, but is this kind of paint resistant to constant "touching"? Will this work the same with acoustic? Maybe with a solid guitar the sound wouldn't change too much, but I think that it could change drastically the sound of an acoustic guitar. What do you think? +Natasha Kudashkina

Hi! Thank you! It will fall when the pyramids do :P So far in my experience the sound of any instrument that i've painted only improved. The paint haven't fell off or slipped away... When you get custom guitar you do treat it as an art work, would not recommend go smashing, hah! Yap.

I wish I would have knew everything g about primer before sanding. Mine is still painted but the clear coat is gone and it looks dusty. It looks just fine but I’d rather just throw something on top of it and paint on that new layer rather than removing layers
@NatashaKudashkina4 жыл бұрын
I tried both ways and sanding only adds mess and time haha...For you, probably okay to sand a little bit, if the paint is thick, you can thin it out and then apply primer and do something new :) All the best with that!

the artwork looks amazing but doesnt all that paint change the tone of the guitar?
@NatashaKudashkina9 жыл бұрын
+Ryan Heldt Yes, so far it has changed it for better.
@jenshendriks90928 жыл бұрын
+Natasha Kudashkina that's not possible. A finishless guitar sounds the best. the thicker the layer of paint, the worse tge sound of the guitar

There was a step you forgot when you sprayed the "retouch Varnish"(not a final varnish). Sealing the artwork crucial to completing the process.

all is well with the guitar, but thank you for your concern :)

Won't the sheer amount of paint on top of the already (what looks like) a pretty thick layer of lacquer affect the resonance and tony of the guitar for the worse? I would've sanded it down :p Beautiful artwork though!
@NatashaKudashkina8 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Sanding it down doesn't do much difference, sometimes only more work and mess :P The layer of paint does effect original sound of an instrument, but in my case it has always been for the best :)

Tone wood is a myth. It makes so little difference you wouldn't hear it. Pickups pick up the sound of metal strings vibrating. Wood is not magnetic and can not effect the sound. Depending on construction the wood my help sustain a minuscule amount.
