Hi there! This episode is a (loose) continuation of my Painting Masters episode on John Yardley ( • JOHN YARDLEY Watercolo... )
🎨 RECREATING JOHN YARDLEY'S PAINTING 🎨
In this one I'll show you the complete drawing and painting process of my recreation of one of his works.
LINK to reference pic: 4.bp.blogspot.c...
🎨 RESULTS 🎨
I'm very pleased with the result of this one.
When I compare the two, it's obvious John had much more finesse and skills. But mine is decent (:
Plus, he probably painted on a larger piece of paper, which allowed more details.
In any case, I hope you enjoyed this one, and I'll talk to you again really soon!

Thanks for showing the whole process here. Very interesting! I especially liked the insights about not overdoing the darkness in the second wash, as I can see that's something I'm doing myself.

Thank you! (: Happy that helped. The only reason I notice it is that I used to do it A LOT in the past, and still do from time to time. We sometimes forget the second layer will immediately be darker, as it is glazed on top of another layer.

the beauty of the creative process is we always have more to grow.. I have been following you since last year, as you know, and the progress is truly unbelievable...the work you put in really shows. I am so happy to have seen most of your journey with watercolours. You inspire us all to keep going and show us that the journey gets better and better. You've done a great job on this one!

Really loved this "process video," and learned a lot from it. I think videos in the 25 - 45 minute range allow you to show more of the development of the drawing, and then rendering in color, which gives viewers the opportunity to follow along and learn how values are slowly built up in stages (and also shows the importance of the initial drawing in representational style works such as this). The degree of "speed up" in the speed painting was just right, allowing us to see the implementation as you described it, and to stop/start while following along. Great video! P.S. LOVED your interview with Steve. I learned much more about him than I'd known before. Well done.

I love master studies, Liron. Thank you very much for showing and sharing this beautiful painting. Your hard work is paying off, without a doubt. I am interested in texture in watercolor at present, tiny marks glazing, lol. I enjoy and am refining it with a LOT of color studies and experimentation.

Thanks for this nice video please how can I adjust the colour with its value if I work from a photographic sources ? Thank you
@LironYan
@LironYan 6 жыл бұрын
Thank you ^_^ It takes a lot of practice. A tip that may help you would be top turn the photo into grayscale, and use both that and the original colored one as reference. Aside from that, create viewfinders (squares that help you isolate a color and value), as well as work on creating a value scale for some of your most commonly used colors. It will train your eye to recognize the nuances of the values you are looking at (whether working from a photo or real life). I hope this helps!

Do you think it would be better and easier to paint your buildings... when they are dry add your shadow. Rather than paint shadow darker as you paint the building. I have also seen people add all shadow and then paint building when shadow dry. Shadow is fleeting so it is captured first. Just thought I'd mention and ask why you actually mix darker color, rather than add shadow after or before. You don't put the base color on the whole building first.

The reason I worked that way, in particular with this painting - is that I was trying to paint like John Yardley. He actually works in patches, and gets things as dark as they need to be in one go. In other words - he doesn't glaze (: When working outside - I will often work in the method you mentioned. I think it's a matter of trying both, and seeing what works best and is the most enjoyable to you. This is why I did this study in the first place ^_^

He is incredible! It's starts as a mess and then he pulls it all together. He also varies his colors a lot, which makes the paintings much more interesting (:

I think your first colors are too dark. If you use more water in the beginning you have more opportunities in the light-values. Just as an idea :-) Thanks for the vid - great channel!

Yes, that could be true! It's always a balance of knowing how dark or light to go in each stage (: Thank you ^_^

Anyone who understands John Yardley's style could say that this is not Yardley's style, starting with the initial pencil drawing.

i have to say, it isn't really painting like John Yardley at all. Yardley has many techniques that you haven't shown or maybe don't know how to . For instance, Yardley is a master at dragging the brush with q quick and deft motion and gets a broken line with the paper or previous wash showing through. It's what makes is work so distinctive. Your rendition is ok and it's competent, but it isn't anything like the way Yardley paints. Or produces his marks.
@LironYan

You are correct, in order to truly paint “like” an artist, a deeper look is probably necessary (: He also doesn’t like to use wet in wet almost at all. I may attempt another one in the future! My focus was more on the composition and approach, rather than using the actual same technique

Sorry, not like Yardley at all and it really shows a conceit in claiming to paint 'just' like him. I studied graphic design and illustration at art school in the 70s when you sharpened a proper pencil with a scalpel rather than using a mechanical pencil. Quality of line. That's the starting point. The rest is based on brevity and instinct. That's John Yardley's brilliance. In my view one of best artists in this vein on KZbin currently is Gary Tucker.

Wonderful! I enjoyed watching it. It is really good to re-create an artwork, with one's personal touch. The building on the left, the tree, the white micro-van + the boats have been beautifully handled. A 30 min clip is really very helpful. I also like Tim Wilmot's tutorials.... and have learned so much. Alvaro Castagnet is another fave artist of mine. His style is so unique and interesting..... unfortunately the tutorials those are available on KZbin are really too brief. I wish a 10~15 min clip would be so beneficial. Those are my views only. All the best to you, and look forward to seeing more of your interesting tutorials.
