In this tutorial, I'll show you how to create a stunning coastal scene using gouache! While I'm known for my oil painting tutorials, today I'm demonstrating how gouache can be the perfect medium for creating loose, expressive landscapes that still maintain realism.
Learn how to:
Capture dramatic coastal cliffs with confident brushwork
Create atmospheric effects in the sky and sea
Achieve the perfect balance between loose painting and realistic detail
Use gouache's unique properties to your advantage
Paint faster, more dynamic studies
Whether you're an oil painter looking to expand your skills or just starting your artistic journey, this tutorial will show you how gouache can transform your landscape painting approach. Perfect for both quick studies and finished pieces!

I really enjoyed this video. I have often wondered about using gouache, but didn't know anything about. I think using it as a preliminary for an oil painting is such a good idea, and you end up with another lovely painting to boot. Loved it

Brilliant, Sam! You helped me understand better how to use gouache! It looks especially helpful for working out colors in advance of a large painting.

Much appreciated, Sam. This one had a real calming effect, I love your minimal brushwork and the rigid shapes in this painting. Also I had no idea you were born on an island, that's so cool!

If you enjoy painting with Gouache, then you need to also try Casine paint sometime. You can get it online at Blicks...maybe Jerrys too but not sure. The paint I use is the Shiva Series and it is by Richeson. Casine is not a popular medium these days as it is little known now and has been hard to find in the past, but it is great fun and inexpensive. To me it falls between Gouache and Acrylics and paints in a similar manner and yet has its own look and feel. Beautiful painting, love your videos!

Beautiful painting! Could you tell us what paper or board you're using ? I'm having such problem now with the type of paper, hot press or cold press wc, or illustration board. Do you ever use gesso ? I sometimes use transparent gesso. Thanks !!
