You can dilute the contrast paint with medium, this will enable more of the metal underneath to shine through, or another option is to add a satin/gloss varnish to it 😀

Turned out fantastic! Also, it's always nice to see what insanity you can do with metallics - a nice blast from the past! Also, can confirm that overbrushing is *very* useful. Might have to try what you did, using drybrushing to build a zenithal. Would probably work better than my current strategy of layering washes to build shadows.

Thanks for stopping by and watching the video! I use overbrushing a lot in my painting, particularly for basecoats, it's just so efficient. Certainly for getting that zenithal effect it's also invaluable, though nothing wrong with layering washes to build shadows too! 😊

@@TheHobbyGrotto Funnily, I use overbrushing and wetbrushing a lot - but I've never thought of using them to get a zenithal (for some reason). Instead, I've been using them to build up my armor's base colour and develop some slight tonal variation as a bit of pre-weathering.

I think generally people get their zenithals from air brush/rattle cans, but overbrush works as well, the whole drybrushing style is just so perfect for metallics imo 😁

@@TheHobbyGrotto Honestly, drybrushing and overbrushing are underrated. Easy, fast coverage, gives depth, and a lighter touch can give you variations for pre-weathering. Not to mention everything else you can do with them.

What was the point of gold paint at the start if even the red one you overpainted it with other metallics to the point that the gold was not visible?

The gold is just something you can use to add a bit of subtle warmth to the metallic, it will be more visible if you choose to have a lighter more diluted red glaze over the top. As I mentioned in the video, you can just run it over regular silver, it doesn't really add any more time to the process starting with a gold or darker silver (like in my Alpha Legion video) it's just an option to experiment with 😀

I really like how smooth the finish is! Do you have any tips to achieve that finish with the thicker contrast paints? I can't seem to get the a smooth result, getting brush strokes even straight after application. I end up having to do two layers to smooth it out, which overpowers the colour most of the time :l You mention you'd like some ideas for other schemes to paint these marines, how about 1. Red Scorpion MKVI from 40K, they use a lot of older MKs and painting grey can be a bit difficult with shading/highlighting without changing the intended tone 2. Ultramarine MKVI, but a veteran with white shoulder pads. Ultramarines is the legion I paint, and I've found it difficult to shade white next to gold (for the gold studs on the white pauldron)

Thanks! The bad news about contrast paints is they're all different, so the only way to really get a smooth finish is to use a larger brush and practice with the paint first. You can move it when you first put it on but really you want the touching to be minimal. I'm quite practiced with contrast paints but I still get inconsistencies and brush strokes on occasion, it's just a by-product of a faster paint style, there will always be pros and cons. Something else you can do is mix it down with medium so its a more translucent glaze, and then do multiple layers. It will be a more consistent colour but also it will change the colour and will require more work, so this needs to be weighed up too 🙂 I've actually been meaning to do a video on grey for a while now, I think it's a colour that's very important but is not often looked at. Will definitely try to come up with some ideas to put this into a video format in the new year 😊

If you’re to use this method but replace the gold with leadbelcher as the base, would using black templar contrast work or would the silver bleed through?

I have another video on the channel called Easy Contrast Glazes where I do actually use Black Templar over silver. In this case I thinned it with medium so the black wasn't as strong, so it would definitely work, I always recommend doing a test model first to see and work out how saturated you want the contrast layer to be 😊
