Hi Ron, can't thank you enough for that. It's a real boost to receive compliments like that as this one was a complete beast to put together. I'm still struggling with new audio hardware and had to adjust the audio in each segment, and am gradually getting to grips with a camcorder I've had for a few months (got into trouble with the wife for buying) and am now starting to see the benefits of. The funny thing about professional grade gadgetry is that you can't just bung it into automatic like you can with my good old consumer stuff. They expect everything to be tuned in manual mode, which isn't always straightforward when you're in front of the camera rather than behind it. Anyway, thanks again. I honestly don't think this would be worthwhile if I was just filming into a vacuum with none of the wonderful encouragement that you and others taking precious time out of their days to deliver. 👍👏

@@thomassmith3711 I used 2 coats for the kitchen as we liked the colour so we didn't feel the need to paint again. However in the bathroom we used 1 coat on the plaster and then painted over it with a Dulux trade paint. It works well as a primer and normal paint but it only comes in white. You may find that brush painting is a little off as we did have to go over the edges and corners again with a normal trade paint but for larger wall areas it works really well with a foam/brush roller.

For a diy painter, you are better than some professional painters I am a decorator and only came across this vlog searching for advice on farrow and ball paint and application on bare plaster. You describe everything to the letter and as a Johnstones product user, I agree with everything you mentioned The only thing I would add, get some decorators whites, to save getting covered in paint and if painting large ceilings, water down second and sometimes the third coat in a lesser percentage Flashing on a large ceiling is a nightmare Top job I would definitely recommend this video to anyone who is classed as a diyer

Bryan, can't thank you enough for that contribution, and I could have done with watering down the second ceiling coat. I painted this room in Johnstone's Flat Matt, which helpfully they discontinued pretty much as soon as I walked out of the shop - I thought they could have told me that before I bought it!! They've brought out a new one which is much easier to spot paint, apparently. Yes. That stuff I recommended in the video Easi-Fill. I did a recent video on it here kzbin.info/www/bejne/bIDQpKlrYrOBb80. You can get it in a 5kg box, with 1kg bags inside. Mix up a small amount and apply with a continental filler knife, scraping the excess off so you're leaving no excess on the surface except in the crack itself. Then a very light sand (may not even need to sand) with 180grit and paper and then touch up with your wall paint. If you're lucky you will just be able to spot paint the crack without having to do the whole wall. Links to the filler knife etc in the Description below the video linked above.

I never realised we have a Johnstone's decorating centre only 6 miles away from me. All this time I never knew it was there. Never realised they actually had any. Surprised to see on their online store finder they're everywhere! It gets better; just found one for Dulux within a couple miles from the Johnstone's one as well. I think I'll be taking a drive later.

Sprey the top coat yes but the mist coat still needs rollering off or it won't key in. So might as well roller the mist, only benefit to sprey the mist is speed of application but it can dry so quick, you either need someone following you to roller it or down the spreyer and pick up the roller every 10 minutes.

Great tips Charlie. Question. I will be painting bare plaster walls shortly. I used the product "MAKE GOOD JOINT FILLER " that doesn't require taping on a small section of plasterboard that wasn't freshly plastered. The instructions say to use a primer on the joints before painting. Would this be PVA primer or thinned out emulsion??
@grafnemilligun91834 жыл бұрын
@@imabeliever3 that make good stuff is awful!! I gave it a coat of zinseer 123 before painting. The difference with that stuff is that you use it for tape and jointing and not skimming. That means you would have fresh plasterboard which I wouldnt mist coat as the high water content would cause the cardboard cover to go weird.

We have just moved into a bungalow and found exactly what you describe of pealing paint from plastered walls. On scraping the paint off sadly very therapeutic the plaster is the same shade as newly laid plaster. Previous owner me thinks was a bit of a skin flint. Great videos with clearly explained hints and tips. If it works for you then it works for you. There are always someone out there who will shoot you down!

Coming from a country that mostly paints there homes, I have been very frustrated & confused with the paint quality in the uk but now watching ur video, I get it & appreciate ur video. With so much competition & choice it’s enough to drive one mad, too many T&C which allows sellers to distort the truth, bunch of criminals. Thanks for the information which I hope will help me IF I take on another project ✝️

You're welcome Helen. Yes it's a confusing landscape to navigate. I mean, I bought a 5 litre tub of Valspar to mist coat with, and wouldn't have read the label if someone hadn't alerted me to the problem of you not being able to water it down, in the comments.
@NiktheEnglishGreekCypriot2 жыл бұрын
The bare plaster paint is brilliant, never have had a call back or even an issue. So much better than watering down emulsion. Also despite appearing thick in the tub, once it’s been mixed up it’s very wet, and covers me in splatters just as much as any mist coat I’ve mixed up. Only thing I’d recommend is doing opposing walls, i mini roll my internal angles and sometimes when you go against an opposing wet angle it’ll sometimes try and drag the paint off

Brilliant presentation, thank you, learned a lot about fresh plaster. Done lots of painting but rarely new plaster. I painted a wall a short while ago where the original paint was inclined to lift off while i was rollering the new coat which didn`t make much sense to me but having watched this presentation i would gleen that the paint i was covering over was most likely rolled on in a non thinned condition or maybe not thinned enough or maybe a non thinned vinyl paint. 😊

Exactly Tony. That's pretty much exactly how the problem manifests itself.

2:49 hear hear! These paints are also marketed as kitchen or bathroom paints and I fell into this trap on our kitchen extension. The paint coat has torn in one or two places can now can't be sanded or it just peels as one. There's a massive ballache of a job to make it good, lurking down the todo list.

Great videos thank you. I watched your video on filling patches in paintwork and applied that method first to my wall (but many many patches- didn't feel confenough to re skim the whole wall level!). Then I used this method with the contract matt/ diluted mist coat and was really happy with the results as it bonded lovely and left a great base for painting. I will give you top marks for this video. as a pro time served decorator since 1971 the amount of problems I have had to sort out simply because they haven't thinned the paint on the first coat. there is no sweet spot on the amount of thinning. it depends on the paint you are using. we normally use dulux trade paint which is usually thicker than diy paints. just add enough to get it to the way you had it
@CharlieDIYte3 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much Raymond. Receiving a positive endorsement from a pro is very humbling and also speaks fathoms about you as it's so easy for pro decorators to criticise us DIYers (and I've had my fair share of that in the past). My motto is basically as much water as you can get away with but as you say it's something you just have to guage. I have to reluctantly say I was quite impressed with the performance of that Screwfix bare plaster paint. Don't know how it works though. It's now hidden behind the wardrobe so I'll never know it's long term performance. 👍
@raymondscott9063 жыл бұрын
ive not used the screw fix one myself and its not really been on the market long enough to say if its good or bad and only someone that knows the plaster has been coated with this and redecorates it will know if its worked or not@@CharlieDIYte

Late to the party, but these videos have been extremely useful, thank you. One thing you may find interesting, I recently used a tack cloth just before painting, it was really efficient at removing dust and tiny particles and left the surface really clean and smooth. They’re commonly used by automotive panel sprayers. I paid less than £7 for 10 from Toolstation.

Celyn Jones. You have a hellish job ahead of you. Soak the wall and scrape away as much as you can. Then either feather the edges with a sander on larger areas or use a filler on small areas. When the wall is as smooth as you can get it or are happy with, then apply the mist coat. Check its smooth, apply a thicker mist coat, and if you are happy proceed to top / finish coat. Good luck.

I always thin down 1st coat apart from a job years ago someone wanted me to paint bare plaster will full emulsion I disapproved try explaining was listening until he backed off me. I also prefer using scuttle and 12 to 18 inch roller as opposed to 9 inch and flimsy trays. I love those Purdy 4 to 6 inch frames and sleeves
