Hi Ron, can't thank you enough for that. It's a real boost to receive compliments like that as this one was a complete beast to put together. I'm still struggling with new audio hardware and had to adjust the audio in each segment, and am gradually getting to grips with a camcorder I've had for a few months (got into trouble with the wife for buying) and am now starting to see the benefits of. The funny thing about professional grade gadgetry is that you can't just bung it into automatic like you can with my good old consumer stuff. They expect everything to be tuned in manual mode, which isn't always straightforward when you're in front of the camera rather than behind it. Anyway, thanks again. I honestly don't think this would be worthwhile if I was just filming into a vacuum with none of the wonderful encouragement that you and others taking precious time out of their days to deliver. 👍👏

Anyway, awesome vid as always - I've posted a pic on the community tab of my channel showing the consequences of not doing a mist coat and I've linked to this vid from there. Tried thinning down my paint by 40% and it worked like a charm. Recommended this and Charlie's video to others and boy did I get flamed! I don't care though because my ceilings look great and I haven't even started on the top coats yet. The only thing I'd add is that be really careful with how much you put in your paint bucket because if you can't roll off the excess you will get splattered. Yes I was warned, no I didn't listen and that's how I got covered in splatter. Oh & remember your safety glasses people!

The No Nonsense Bare Plaster Paint is one of the few products I would highly reccomended. It can be used on still drying plaster as it let's the walls breathe and has a really good finish. To be fair there's plenty of walls in my house (and previous) that we just left with the plaster paint as the finish as it is so good.

@darkrule1 3 жыл бұрын
@@thomassmith3711 I used 2 coats for the kitchen as we liked the colour so we didn't feel the need to paint again. However in the bathroom we used 1 coat on the plaster and then painted over it with a Dulux trade paint. It works well as a primer and normal paint but it only comes in white. You may find that brush painting is a little off as we did have to go over the edges and corners again with a normal trade paint but for larger wall areas it works really well with a foam/brush roller.

For a diy painter, you are better than some professional painters I am a decorator and only came across this vlog searching for advice on farrow and ball paint and application on bare plaster. You describe everything to the letter and as a Johnstones product user, I agree with everything you mentioned The only thing I would add, get some decorators whites, to save getting covered in paint and if painting large ceilings, water down second and sometimes the third coat in a lesser percentage Flashing on a large ceiling is a nightmare Top job I would definitely recommend this video to anyone who is classed as a diyer
@CharlieDIYte
@CharlieDIYte 4 жыл бұрын
Bryan, can't thank you enough for that contribution, and I could have done with watering down the second ceiling coat. I painted this room in Johnstone's Flat Matt, which helpfully they discontinued pretty much as soon as I walked out of the shop - I thought they could have told me that before I bought it!! They've brought out a new one which is much easier to spot paint, apparently. I've always got a massive amount of respect for professional decorators, or any professionals actually whose default position isn't to tear into people like me! It's normally a good indicator of the quality and professionalism of their own work - and I'm sure that goes for you, too! Thanks again 👍

I did some labouring for a builder friend on a shop renovation, something I had never done before and I learnt so much from him over 4 weeks. G'day Charlie. We prime the roller with a bit of water, spin the excess water out then into the paint. It gives a better paint uptake especially on new rollers. As always, love your presentation of the basics of DIY. Regards to your family and please take care in these troubling times. Love the beam!
@CharlieDIYte
@CharlieDIYte 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Andy. Thanks for that. Yes the beam is great, although I wish I'd raised the ceiling now to reveal more of it. A new roof was built over the original in the '70s so I could have revealed the whole lot and put a couple of dormers in to get more light into the room. Hey ho, you live and learn! I know how you feel and actually I'm in a similar situation at the moment with the house refurb. The trick is to write down all the jobs you need to do and divide them up into small manageable chunks rather than looking at everything as a whole. You can then take it one day or weekend at a time and gradually knock off each task - which you'll find very satisfying to complete. Good luck 👊

Your videos are are always informative on many construction issues but with this it's always best to do a mist coat before you do any sanding or filling as it stabilisers the walls and help prevent scarifying and shows up every place needing to be filled as it's easy to miss snots when the plaster is raw and 180grit is the only way to go when knocking down a filled mist,just my professional opinion from a dec with 32 years in the trade but apart from that very good videos mate👍

The bare plaster paint is brilliant, never have had a call back or even an issue. So much better than watering down emulsion. Also despite appearing thick in the tub, once it’s been mixed up it’s very wet, and covers me in splatters just as much as any mist coat I’ve mixed up. Only thing I’d recommend is doing opposing walls, i mini roll my internal angles and sometimes when you go against an opposing wet angle it’ll sometimes try and drag the paint off

How come your plaster is brown ? What a struggle. We plaster with white plaster here , and that is so white , it hardly needs paint. But we paint it anyway with Histor or Flexa *Monodek* , (local brands) one or two times, great stuf (always use these brands, DIY own brand , sucks) Always on special offer at all our DIY shop at around 32 euro for 10 liter or 10+2 Regular roller, no fancy stuff. Always work, also in my garage boxes without heating, lasts for ages. And when there is too much to do, I borrow a pro spray machine from a friend or let him do it hehehehe.

Very good info 👍 but can I just add that its Always best practice to prime/mist coat bare plaster before filling, as filling onto a porous surface can cause issues due to the surface sucking the moisture out of the filler too quickly, Then simply spot prime over filled areas once sanded smooth. Also, mist coating a newly plastered wall will then highlight the imperfections.

@CharlieDIYte
@CharlieDIYte 4 жыл бұрын
Yes. That stuff I recommended in the video Easi-Fill. I did a recent video on it here kzbin.info/www/bejne/bIDQpKlrYrOBb80. You can get it in a 5kg box, with 1kg bags inside. Mix up a small amount and apply with a continental filler knife, scraping the excess off so you're leaving no excess on the surface except in the crack itself. Then a very light sand (may not even need to sand) with 180grit and paper and then touch up with your wall paint. If you're lucky you will just be able to spot paint the crack without having to do the whole wall. Links to the filler knife etc in the Description below the video linked above.

I will give you top marks for this video. as a pro time served decorator since 1971 the amount of problems I have had to sort out simply because they haven't thinned the paint on the first coat. there is no sweet spot on the amount of thinning. it depends on the paint you are using. we normally use dulux trade paint which is usually thicker than diy paints. just add enough to get it to the way you had it

Thanks so much Raymond. Receiving a positive endorsement from a pro is very humbling and also speaks fathoms about you as it's so easy for pro decorators to criticise us DIYers (and I've had my fair share of that in the past). My motto is basically as much water as you can get away with but as you say it's something you just have to guage. I have to reluctantly say I was quite impressed with the performance of that Screwfix bare plaster paint. Don't know how it works though. It's now hidden behind the wardrobe so I'll never know it's long term performance. 👍

Hey Charlie nother great video. I'm not professional but have painted probably 10 times over plaster. I converted our garage into a reiki studio for my wife were I did everything including all the plastering so I am a very competent DIYer. ( I also work for B&Q so the discount on is handy!) Anyway totally agree I made the mistake using a vinyl emulation once and it pealed off within a month. And I always use a contact at the moment leyland and always water it down nearer to 40% water.

Great tips Charlie. Question. I will be painting bare plaster walls shortly. I used the product "MAKE GOOD JOINT FILLER " that doesn't require taping on a small section of plasterboard that wasn't freshly plastered. The instructions say to use a primer on the joints before painting. Would this be PVA primer or thinned out emulsion??
@grafnemilligun9183
@grafnemilligun9183 4 жыл бұрын
@@imabeliever3 that make good stuff is awful!! I gave it a coat of zinseer 123 before painting. The difference with that stuff is that you use it for tape and jointing and not skimming. That means you would have fresh plasterboard which I wouldnt mist coat as the high water content would cause the cardboard cover to go weird.

Hi Charlie. I watched the video last week and this morning tried it out on my freshly plastered bathroom. plaster was completely dry. I used 1L of trade white with 0.5L water. it went on great with a brush for the corners and a regular roller for the rest, went on well and gave a good coverage with both methods of application. the only small problem is that it dries almost instantly! there are a couple of imperfections that can be sorted out before the first full coat. Thanks for the video.

Hi Charley! I was having this discussion the other day with a decorator mate of mine. I do a lot of decorating also on weekends when I’m not doing my normal job of house renovations. I asked him why on the back of all paint tins and data sheets for paints like diamond Matt or vinyl soft sheen or even vinyl Matt say water down first coat to seal bare or pourous surfaces..... The only reason I asked this is due to having a durable Matt fail on me once when applied over a watered down mist coat... it was a crown contract Matt I used (the only time) it seems some contract matts are dusty after drying even after being watered down and the top coat simply sticks to the dust. Decorator knew what I meant and has had good results watering down contract Matt and finished coat paint for a mist... I took it one step further and spoke to dulux who confirmed basically you can do either nowadays... So of course my mind is completely blown and if you want my honest opinion I’d still rather mist in contract Matt thinned off! Just seems to go against the grain for me to do it another way but as I say it’s on the reverse of most paints I’ve seen... The world of decorating is one that changes so fast and can bite you in the behind sometimes! Thankfully I’ve had it go wrong once which forced me to look into it deeper. Sorry about the long winded comment but just thought I’d share this with you. As always love the channel, take care and hope you are well during these boring lockdown times! Marc

I painted a wall a short while ago where the original paint was inclined to lift off while i was rollering the new coat which didn`t make much sense to me but having watched this presentation i would gleen that the paint i was covering over was most likely rolled on in a non thinned condition or maybe not thinned enough or maybe a non thinned vinyl paint. 😊
