My partner and I went to art school (well, hers was a university!) in the U.K. a long time ago. Today there would be no one who could teach watercolour even if students wanted to learn. This video is so instructive, so positive! Incidentally Turner (JMW) used to scratch out highlights with the point of a sharp knife when the painting or sketch was completely dry!

Thanks Anton! I bet art school must have been a lot of fun? I eventually want to teach large workshops or team up with others to do the same,... watercolor is a medium where education makes all the difference. That's an interesting way to scratch out hightlights that Turner used. Happy Painting to you, and thanks for watching.

Hi Chris, I am very new to watercolor and wanted to tell you how much I am learning from the video's of yours I have seen so far. It is so nice to see "real" time painting especially when you are just learning like me. I am a mixed media artist and love all types of media but there is something about watercolor I enjoy the most. Thank you

I just discovered you, Chris...so glad I did! I just finished this painting with you and I learned A TON. I have largely learned to do watercolor from KZbin, so I'm a pretty good judge of this type of learning. Your relaxed style encourages me to play with the wonders of what the water will do, and as a beginner, I am thankful for you not assuming I know all the techniques and vocabulary that a seasoned painter would know. In other words, you make it comfortable to try new ideas. Do you ever do any workshops? Just wondering. Keep up the awesome videos! Becky

Recently found your artwork and videos. I'm working my way thru them. I would like to know what size you are painting when you do your tutorials. BTW, I checked out your website and the one painting, I don't remember the title, had to be the Windmill restaurant in Morgantown, PA. Am I right? My family ate many ice cream cones there.

Are you using hot pressed and what colors are you working with? Love you technique!
@cpetri766
@cpetri766 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Mary, you are correct! Arches hot pressed paper satin grain. I used an inexpensive Prang-Dixon oval 16 - paint palette. I matched the colors as if I was using my normal everyday palette. You can see a review of my palette by typing watercolor palette by chris petri in a youtube search. Main colors in sky- all 3 of my blues, and a touch of Cad Orange at the base of the sky. Ocean is Sap Green with French Ultramarine Blue where ocean meets the sky, then Cobalt Blue and Viridian Green for shallow ocean areas. Finally beach sand is just a little Yellow Ochre, Raw Sienna, and a touch of Burnt Umber. Happy Painting!

Mary, forgot to mention to also use a touch of Purple I the sky and water for some interesting modulation of color.

It looks good but that horizon line looked way too dark on the video. Might be just cause I live at the beach so I have to paint the ocean a lot.

Hi Joe, point well taken and you are very observant I find that sometimes for a more dramatic effect in my paintings I will take a more abstract approach,... and not follow exactly what I see in nature.,... Artist license so to speak.... Well ... Happy painting Joe!
