If you must paint over the wood- use a high quality flexible caulk on the joints between the panels. Without it, when the panels expand and contract, the paint will crack at the joints.

I'm in Australia and in the City I live, there seems to be a trend to paint window and door trims to make them look modern. Newer homes also tend to have MDF, as opposed to real timber, so painting makes a lot of sense. When I repainted our house, I agonised over it, but I just couldn't paint over real timber.

Quick tip, hammer some holes with a small punch or nail in the paint can seal groove to let paint drip back in. That way you lid isnt sitting on built up paint making it hard to seal.

If you don't use a shellac-based primer, the knots will show through in time. And putty/wood fill/bondo the knots. I know..I got lots of pine trimwork. Plus I would have had the radiator temporarily removed to get behind it. 80 percent prep, 10 percent painting and 10 percent cleanup!

Cleaning (TSP) and sanding at a minimum. Spot sealing any knots. Those walls are many years old. Grease, oils, dirt, smoke, years of Scott's Liquid Gold all will inhibit paint adhesion, I don't care what king of magic primer you may use. Paint and primers need 'tooth' to hold on to the surface. An oily glossy surface provides very little tooth. @@Macron87

Why would anyone want to paint over wood panelling? It adds character and beauty to a house. They should have just taken down the panelling and paint the drywall underneath!

Sorry, but the method used to select the color was silly. Drop one color, then drop another color, then " go with your gut". Boy, that's really getting a professional's opinion all right. Then, after all is said and done, you still end up with a job that someone else says " why in the hell did they paint over that paneling. I think it would be better to just remove the paneling and paint the walls.

Great prep work and painting. Horrible choice of color to blend with the leftover wooden trims. This color will give you a headache. As a Pro, I always advise my clients what goes with what, as clients always have these pictures in their minds that are completely different from reality. Also do a test area first to give them an idea of what it will look like. Blue might be good in a very small elegant room but not in a large room with stained wooden trims

@@tonyr8443I didn’t know there was a need for a “pro” to determine what color paint a person desires. I get what you’re saying tho. But what you may think it’s great, they may hate it. I’ve been in the building/remodeling business for over 20 years also, and I always go with what the homeowner wants, and if they don’t like it they can pick and pay for a new color. On the other hand if I chose everything and they didn’t like it and wanted what they originally wanted I’d have to eat the cost. I e done some ugly colors that I would never consider for anything and they absolutely love it 🤷🏼♂️
