I hope the lady who painting the portrait he shows at around nineteen minutes in was not too wounded at the critique. I personally thought it was refreshing, delightful, and compelling in its own way. There are many valid styles. Rembrandt is not the only example. This portrait was like a miniature Alex Katz, with a Wayne Thiebaud spritely freshness. Not meant as a diss to Mr. Baumann, but I felt kind of bad for the lady who painting this lovely portrait. The colors are in perfect harmony. The eyes are still, yet animated, mysterious. Love the balance of form, the negative space, above all the use of color. Us self-taught painters are constantly learning by doing, and by soaking up instruction in all forms. Keep painting, auburn-haired lady!

Ok, and I'm doing my first commission which is a baby portrait and had to find this video again to get the exact recipe for the flesh tone. I've been torturing myself over this portrait because the child is so hauntingly beautiful that I'm afraid I won't do her justice. The color with the pthalo yellow green and alizarin crimson is perfect and I had to find this again to do the next layer.

Portraiture is really more suggestion than copying the image... I usually draw the portrait with one eye closed, as to remove shifting from binocular vision.

Thank you for mentioning Daniel Greene here. I have looked him up and found some videos of him that helped with some color mixing issues I have been having recently. I am normally great at mixing colors, but had just had a while where I couldn't seem to put my brain in gear! His tips got me back on the right track again. I love it when you drop names of artists that you know of, because I don't really socialize with people in the artist community around here much to know who to look for. It seems a little silly that I don't because I actually live in and around an entire community built by artists who came to this area to work because of the nature and beauty of it. (Nashville, IN) I have been doing accounting for years and decided to drop that and go back to my first love... art. So, I am just a little over a year back into doing painting/drawing etc full time. I have watched every one of your videos as a 'brush up' course. Thank you so much for your videos. They are putting me back into a career that I love. I enjoy your style of teaching because it is not... "here watch another speed painting," but more of a classroom discussion regarding technique, style, and fundamentals. Thanks again.

Excellent, excellent teaching! These people are learning to really do the work. There are so many students that don’t take the time to learn and practice portraiture. They give up because it is hard and take the easy way out. Two things more, and I hope you don’t mind; it seems the students, for a self portrait, are not setting up a single source light on themselves correctly as they stand in front of their mirror to draw and paint. Also, checking your drawing with a hand held mirror and seeing the reverse image of the work really points out what needs to be corrected especially when working on portraits and gaining a likeness.

Thanks for this important video Stefan. Although I usually paint landscape and some still life I have been working all week on a portrait of my mother n law. She passed away years back so impossible to paint from life. My husband thinks it's a great painting of someone who looks like his mother but not her. I can't catch her spirit. Wish I could show you her photo and my painting. But it was helpful to hear some mistakes I made. One being I too put the light in the background on the wrong side. LOL. Love all your videos. How interesting about looking in a mirror and how we never see ourselves the way others do since it is a reflection. So if you take a selfie of yourself with your cell phone is that how other people see you since the photo is flipped? If you use a selfie for a self portrait would that be how others see you? When I was 6 or 7 years old, I would observe peoples' noses meticulously. But then, I would draw the nostrils on the side, instead of the bottom.

Mark Carder has a website called DrawMixPaint where there's a video which explains how to set up a studio so you can use a proportional divider to draw from life,at least for still lifes,not so sure about self portraits.It involves a string from the ceiling I think.

For the problem in the beginning with the tool moving forward and backward....why not just always extend your arm completely when using it? This is how I was taught to "measure" whatever im drawing with a pencil, then compare ratios to your drawing. This tool seems better but I am wondering if it works while your arm is completely extended to discourage it moving away or towards you?

hi Stefan, I was drawing a portrait and like listening to your videos while I work. Anyway, I was trying for a Rembrandt effect, like chiaroscuro, and I had my darkest side opposite where the light enters and was wondering why it seemed wishy-washy. As soon as I heard you say that the darkest side will be the side that shows the highlights and the other side, although its in shadow won't be as dark (well that was the basic gist). I raced over to my portrait, which had been bothering me all day as to what was the issue in that it didn't seem finished, I picked up my charcoal and darkened my light source side and lightened my darkest area. I spent maybe five minutes and the result was striking. Thank you for your You Tube posts! This is my fifth portrait I have done in the past year and I hadn't picked up a brush or pencil in about 30 years. I wish it was possible to upload the portrait file as it had me stewing about it all afternoon. Then also send what the portrait looked like after I spent the extra five minutes to make the changes. It was remarkable. My medium is graphite and charcoal on Bristol vellum, and although not a painting in the literal sense, your advice does still apply. So again, thank you, I so appreciate your work and all that you do AND REALLY wish I had known about you while I lived in California :)

I need a proportional divider so badly! Any ideas on ways to make a temporary one until I can go out and buy one? I live out in the country with no store nearby that sells them. So any advice on things I might possibly have at home to make one would be grateful to me. Thank you!

A couple of rulers and a nail would probably do it. If you have 12” rulers, put holes down the middle of the rulers at the inch marks. If you join the rulers together with the nail at the 6” mark, you have 1:1. If you put the nail at the 4” marks, you’ll get 1:2, at the 3” mark, you get 1:3, 2” mark 1:5. If you have a wooden yard stick ruler, that would work well.

phthalo yellow green plus alizarin crimson gives me grey. A pretty grey, but useless for skin tones. phthalo yellow green plus cad red is good. alizarin crimson plus sap green is good. sap green plus cad red is good. black plus cad red plus yellow ochre is good (and very versatile). But alizaring crimson plus phthalo yellow green is NOT good. These are my findings. (All of the above are mixed with titanium white.)

If you're red-green colorblind, just don't use green. That's impossible for landscapes with vegetation, but if you want to paint portraits, that should be easy. Try the Zorn palette, which uses only Titanium White, Cadmium Red (medium light), Ochre Yellow, and Ivory Black. You can paint great portraits with that palette, and you'll know it will look the same to you as it will to a full-sighted person.
