How to Paint the Saw Cleaver Hunter from Bloodborne the Board Game by CMON

I was so excited at receiving my Kickstarter pledge for CMON's Bloodborne the Board Game this week that I had to paint up one of the miniatures. So today I'm going to show you how I painted the Saw Cleaver Hunter, one of the core box hunters from Bloodborne the Board Game.

Oh my... Looks like one more hobby that i need to fuel and the all in pledge did not even arrived yet. Your work on the mini looks so cool and making it so unique. Wow, I'm nervous about painting these great minis but this helps alot. One question, why did you use a metallic paint for the buckles and pommel(?) But not for the gun and cleaver?

So thats a great question! What I find is that if you just paint them with the metallic colour it looks a little bit too....metallic. So for the buckles, because they're so tiny it looks fine. But then for the for the gun it's a lot larger so I drybrushed the metallic colour over the grey so that when the light hits it it gives off a metallic sheen without looking like pure metal. If that makes sense? It just adds a little subtlety to it but it's totally down to a personal choice and sometimes, when the mood takes me, I'll just paint something pure metallic :)

This is a great tutorial! I have a question: Where did you see the artwork and the official paint scheme from the Kickstarter? The art of the Saw Cleaver in the Rulebook is really just black and grey, very muted, but the picture on the Kickstarter page (way down) is more bright. I wonder if you have another picture, a bigger one I can reference? Thanks for the tutorial! Well done.

Great question, so for this one I googled Bloodborne Hunter and drew upon the concept artwork that came up in the results as opposed to the game screenshots and assets as they’re being affected by in-engine lighting effects :) I picked a couple of the artwork images and used those as the basis but they themselves are a lot more muted than what CMON did for theirs which I agree was way more bright than something you’d expect to see in the game

Hi, so I am about to buy the core game, chalice dungeon and hunters dream and I have just painted 1 miniature in my life. So my question is, how much paint and which colours do you think I will be using for these 3 boxes?

What I would say is start out with a starter paint set from the likes of Army Painter. When it comes to the colours you'd need for all three boxes it would be a list too long to list but in reality it all comes down to the paint scheme you want to go with and how you want them to look. Buy yourself a starter set, paint a few and then see where you go from there :)

@@MisfitHobbies Hey thanks so much for your response. I just bought a black primer, a few paints from citadel, primary colors and some others that I know I would want in the minis and some shades. We will see what happens, I will practice first with some other minis though, I dont wanna ruin the bloodborne ones.

What did you use for your white spirits/mineral spirits? Never used any so I'm not sure what I should get.

So I just used the store brand white spirits that I got from my local B&Q (hardware store here in the UK)

@@MisfitHobbies good to know, cheap stuff it is. Also if I may ask: do you recommend using a matt coat varnish on these bloodborne figures? I plan to use them and want the finish to last, but I don't want to make them look glossy or mess them up if I can help it.

@@悪臭-p9p A matte varnish can really help protect it but you've gotta be super careful. If there's any moisture in the air it can lead to frosting so just be careful to do it in a dry environment

Don't worry, there's no offence here from that :) Honestly, I would agree that it looked great without the airbrushed weathering layer and I definitely lost some of the depth perhaps when I did that but we learn these things through experimenting and having fun and that's what it's all about :)

awesome job! What type/size brushes are you using for your miniatures? I have some 00 but they are frayed at the tip so I'm looking to get some new brushes.

I tend to switch between 0 and Nr.2 for most of my painting but I've got a couple of much larger sizes if I'm batch painting or doing a larger area that I just want done quicker. I managed to pick mine up quite cheap, they aren't fancy brushes or anything but they hold a point and that's all I need :)

Thank you! I just got my all-in pledge and have never tried painting miniatures before. With my generally shakey hands I'm a little gun-shy, but yours looks so good I may have to bite the bullet. As a complete starter, would you recommend a starter kit (I've seen a few on Amazon for reasonable prices) or is it better to just buy the paints and brushes I need as I go?

I would say if you intend to paint a certain game or kit, like Bloodborne for example, see if you can find a set that includes most of the paints you’ll need then you can always add to it :)

I do like these painting tutorials, you keep things realistic but don't treat viewers as infants. However, would like to see some other content too, maybe some modelling or solo play battle reports would be awesome!

I hear you, I’m working on some other content at the moment but I’m quite limited in space for battle reports unfortunately. But don’t worry more varied content will hopefully be here soon, the painting guides just buy me a little time to make them :)

As a fan of both versions of the game, it seems a little too dark. That hunter is not that black.

I appreciate that feedback :) A lot of the artwork that I was using as reference was pretty dark but you could definitely finish it all up without adding the enamel wash layer which adds a lot of that darkness, for me I just enjoy the look that it gives.

Why would you ever use green on a saw cleaver? Have you ever played Bloodborne? Citadel's Blood for the blood god is the ONLY choice.

You should check CMON’s official paintwork for the game, they had green on it
